Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: January 12, 1905 Both these events - the signs of Messiah's birth and the signs of His death were given as foretold. I pause again to ask this Rev. Gentleman if the Signs of Messiah's death on this continent do not add something to the picture of Christ's career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 19, 1905 The lessons are very simple, but they go very deep. Trials borne for Christ bring us to the heart of Christ. The nearer we are to Him the more calmly we shall look on the sunshine and the shadow too. It is His sunshine, and it is His shadow. Joined to Him we shall arm ourselves with the same mind, and pray for those who have wronged us or are wronging us. If they refuse to own us or receive us, let us hope for the time when the clouds will pass, and for the day of Christ, when all the flock will be gathered in the fold upon the everlasting hills. Let us pray that God will protect us and preserve us in whatever He has appointed of joy and of sorrow. Every time of trial is a time when the New Country becomes very near. We shall soon pass from the Church militant to watch from the eternal shere the tempest-tossed ser vants of our Master making for the haven, troubled on every side, but not distressed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. The extraordinary vividness and certainty with which the eternal world has been apprehended in times of persecution must strike everyone who has studied the annals of the martyrs. By bearing pain and loss in the Christian way, we shall persuade men. It shall turn unto you for a testimony, said our Lord Himself. The faithfulness unto death of Christ's witnesses has done more, perhaps, even than the preaching of the Gospel, to persuade the world that Christ lives and reigns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 12, 1905 In all the useful and philanthropic enterprises thus enumerated, and in many more that cannot now be named, it was virtually the Church that took the lead; for Brigham Young, as President and trustee-in-trust, acted as the agent of the Church in investing its means and manipulating its revenues. In this capacity he built the Deseret Telegraph line, entirely with home capi tal and home labor, only a few years after the original telegraph line crossed the continent, and before the advent of the railroad. He and other leading Mormons helped to construct the Union Pacific and Central Pacific rail roads, which on May 10, 1869, made Promontory, Utah, their place of meeting and welding point between East and West. About this time also he took the initiative in organizing Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution, a mam moth concern designed to unify Mormon commercial interests in the face of impending fierce competition from the outside, resulting from the coming of the railroad. He even attempted to re-establish the United Order, and succeeded in part; though his greatest success in that direction was limited to the mighty Cc-operative movement of which he was the chief instigator and promoter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: January 19, 1905 This book has been published in about twelve different languages, and will yet go to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people in their own tongue as predicted by the Prophet Joseph Smith. We may add here that through the Book of Mormon and other revelations to this great Prophet, we learn that the Redeemer of the world, subsequent to His resurrection, and after His visit to the tribe of Joseph, went to the ten lost tribes of Israel, and organized His Church among them, after the same pattern as He had done at Jerusalem and on the western hemisphere. Their Prophets and Apostles received and wrote the revelations of God which were to them the scriptures of divine truth, even as the Bible was to the Jews, and the Book of Mormon to the house of Joseph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: January 5, 1905 We have cause for abundant rejoicing in contemplating the prosperity of a material character which has attended the Latter-day Saints during the year now nearing its end. Throughout these mountain vales the blessings of heaven have rested upon the earth. Crops of all kinds have been prolific, and a rich harvest has rewarded the labors of the husbandman. Thus food has been plentifully provided for the inhabitants of these regions, and a good surplus has been exported to distant places. In addition to the cereals that have been raised, and the increase that has attended the flocks and herds that have roamed upon the hills or fattened upon the rich products of the low lands, the great crops of sugar beets that have been gathered, have been a source of wealth to the community. The establishment of sugar factories in Utah and Idaho has been made possible because of this abundant product. With advanced experience in the cultivation of the beet, and in the manufac ture therefrom of first-class sugar, we have promise of a full supply of the saccharine article for home consumption and to supply our neighbors in sur rounding states and territories. All this will greatly promote development of the resources and augment the wealth of this intermountain region. The action taken by the government towards developing and controlling the streams and waters that can be used for the irrigation of our agricultural lands, gives hope and courage to the farmers, and these are made stronger by the experiments of the Agricultural college of the state of Utah, which give evidence that by scientific farming abundant cr0ps can be raised here with the use of much less water than has been customary. With these double ad vantages - first the promise of more water, then the evidence that what we already have can accomplish much more than was previously supposed, we can reasonably look for a vastly greater and more compact population in this arid region than that which it at present supports. With a fertile soil, pure air, and the control of abundance of water, the intermountain farmer will be master of the situation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: December 21, 1905 Joseph was beginning a journey of exploration to the Rocky Mountains, to prepare for the fulfillment of his own prophecy that the Saints would sometime be established there, when the timidity of some of his friends brought him back to martyrdom. His nature was not a restless one, but from the beginning of his ministry he had been compelled to move frequently, either alone or with his people, to avoid conflict with his persecutors or death at their hands. The inspiration of moving the people to the West was left for another to carry out, but this and every other great policy of the Church were taught and in most cases instituted by the Prophet Joseph. Joseph Smith was permitted in his few years upon the earth to accomplish more than any other mortal except the Savior. We honor him for his integ rity and long-suffering, and at the same time, we praise and worship and give glory to the Lord for revealing to the earth through him the eternal truths of the Gospel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: September 14, 1905 And in their triumph die; like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume: the sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, And in the taste confounds the appetite Therefore, love moderately; long love doth so Too swift arrives as tardy as-too slow. Where connubial differences occur, each Of the interested parties is likely to think the trouble lies wholly with the other and does not consider that in all probability the other has equally as much cause for complaint. Love that is blind before marriage has a remarkably keen vision afterward. If people contemplating such a union would learn to look at each other in their true light there would not be such a waste of affection before marriage nor such a famine for it later on. The spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be moderate in all things. N 0 one who properly understands the principles which the Savior taught can be an extremist. Such a one will not be too bold nor too retiring; not too violent in his love-making before the wedding nor too forgetful of his life's partner afterward. The Gospel, being the perfect law, is destined to make perfect people - people who will do everything exactly right. On the other hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: December 7, 1905 This brother immediately began to pay his tithing and his fast offerings, and he gave me something to eat every day, thus showing that the Gospel had taken a firm hold on him. As Alexandretta is a small city, the fact that I had baptized this man soon spread, and some person took the news to the chief of police, who came to me and asked what_i was doing. I informed him that I was giving out tracts and making the people acquainted with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He said to me, You are a Mormon, and the Mormons have no permission to preach in Turkey. I offered him some tracts, and told him that if he would read them he would find the true Gospel of Christ. He took two of our tracts from his pocket and said he would read them. After having a long talk with him, he departed. I continued my work unmolested for a time, and held meetings every Sunday. Shortly afterwards I baptized some more converts, and this had the effect of bringing the chief of police around to me again. He appeared to be very angry, and claimed that I had promised him that I would not give out tracts and would hold no meetings. He told me that he was a Mohammedan, and that he did not believe the doctrines of the Mor mon Church. He said that other Christian Protestants - orthodox and Armenian, had complained against me. I said that I was acquainted with the Turkish laws, and knew that he could not banish an American until he had visited an American Consulate. I also told him that I would not leave the city, because I was going to preach the Gospel there, and that he could go to the Consulate and talk the matter over with the consul. He then left me again, and I went on with my work. After a few months, during which time I preached continually in the city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: February 2, 1905 Shortly after this visit to the revival meeting, the Christian Age of January 18th, 1905, came to our table. In looking over this number, we found an article entitled, How to Enter the Kingdom, which, it stated, was a study of the International Lesson for January 29th, 1905. The text was from John iii: 1-15. As it is our business in these lands to preach the Gospel and show to the people how to enter the kingdom of heaven, the article was of special interest. From verses one to fifteen there were three columns of comments and explanations. It tells that Nicodemus came to Jesus by night - how he came, and for what purpose. The writer quotes verse one: There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the J ews then comments on the passage. Then verse two: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Verse three continues: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. These three verses with ex planations occupy a column in the journal. Then verse six is quoted: That which is born of the flesh is flesh, etc., and thus the commentator continues to the end of the lesson. Thinking that here again was something omitted, we turned to John iii and read the chapter. The bold headline in the Christian Age article was, How to Enter the Kingdom, but the writer seemed to stop at the threshold. He had explained that a man had to be born again to see the kingdom, and had there stopped. We had always found something more in that chapter, state ments by the Savior of vitally important ordinances that had to be performed before an entrance could be had into the kingdom. The writer had entirely omitted the fourth and fifth verses of the chapter. These verses are as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: August 10, 1905 There is a spiritually scientific and philosophic reason at the bottom of the demand for faith as the first condition of salvation. Unless we believe in God, He cannot do for us all that He desires to do. He cannot give what we are not able or not willing to receive. Therefore He says, Draw near unto Me, and I will draw near unto you. We draw near unto God by believing in Him, and if we truly believe in Him we will obey Him, thereby building upon the rock, and not upon the sand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: November 23, 1905 Some who have been asked if willing to perform a mission have suggested that their call be postponed for a certain length of time in order to become better prepared. A number of such missionaries have been heard to admit that it would have been better for them if they had accepted the call at once; and some have, after asking for an extension of time, ' changed their minds and reported themselves ready to go without availing themselves of the time given for preparation, finding that the longer they remained the further they were from being ready. The late Apostle Parley P. Pratt, in his Autobiography, relates that upon one occasion he hesitated before starting upon a mission that had been as signed him. He was in debt, and was building a house, and desired to finish it before leaving. Before it was finished the house took fire and was burned. Elder Pratt then decided at once that he was ready to fulfill his mission. He looked upon his misfortune as a rebuke for not responding when first called. Upon deciding to go, his friends came to his assistance, his debts were can celled, and thus his way was made clear to perform his duty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: December 28, 1905 Joseph smith's claim to divine authority may be tested by the doctrines he taught. If these lead us out from the dark, narrow cells of current theo logy into the sunlight of truth, where, in every direction are unlimited and soul-satisfying vistas of the goodness and greatness of God, then may we not pronounce these doctrines divine? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: April 27, 1905 When I next regained my senses I was half a mile down the canyon from the place where I began to load, and was seated upon the logs, which were loaded in the exact position that I had designed to put them - three on the bottom and two on the top of the three. All were nicely bound with chains; I was sitting upon my Sheep-skin with the woolly side up; my whip was on my load carefully so it could not lose; my overcoat, home - made jeans, lay across the load in front of me, but within my reach. As I arose from my stupor, I spoke to my oxen and they stopped; and I viewed my surroundings with feelings that cannot be described. I quickly took my bearings, as I was familiar with every point in the canyon. Being quite cold, I essayed to jump from the load, and put on my overcoat; but to my surprise my limbs refused to do my bidding, they were so sore and my body was so badly bruised. I sat there and reflected for a few moments upon my peculiar situation. I looked around my load and found everything in place just as I would have put things myself. My axe was firmly bedded in the but end of one of the logs, and everything else was in first - class condition. After making another unsuccessful effort to get from the load, I reached my coat, put it on as best I could in a sitting posture, and started my oxen for home. I arrived safely about an hour later than my usual time. My wife was very uneasy about me on account of the lateness of my arrival, and because of the fear ever present with her during the whole day, that something would happen to my injury. She met me at the corral and carried me in her arms to the house, which she was then quite able to do, I weighing but a little over a hundred pounds. I was placed in a comfortable position on the bed, and she then cared for my team. For some days she carefully nursed me before I was able to move around the house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: August 17, 1905 The idea of quoting that as conferring any right of Presidency either upon the Prophet himself, or any of his posterity is to say the least very peculiar. Let us see what this blessing put upon the head of Joseph really was. In order to do this we shall have to quote also the preceding and two following paragraphs, as follows. But the anoint ing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: June 8, 1905 Inasmuch as I am speaking to an assemblage of mothers, I Shall have nothing whatever to say in praise of an easy life. Yours is the work which is never ended. No mother has an easy time, and most mothers have very hard times, and yet what true mother would barter her experience of joy and sorrow in exchange for. A life of cold selfishness which insists upon perpetual amusement and the avoidance of care, and which often finds its fit dwelling place in some flat designed to furnish with the least possible expenditure of effort the maximum of comfort and of luxury but in which there is literally no place for children.
