Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: December 7, 1905 This brother immediately began to pay his tithing and his fast offerings, and he gave me something to eat every day, thus showing that the Gospel had taken a firm hold on him. As Alexandretta is a small city, the fact that I had baptized this man soon spread, and some person took the news to the chief of police, who came to me and asked what I was doing. I informed him that I was giving out tracts and making the people acquainted with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He said to me, You are a Mormon, and the Mormons have no permission to preach in Turkey. I offered him some tracts, and told him that if he would read them he would find the true Gospel of Christ. He took two of our tracts from his pocket and said he would read them. After having a long talk with him, he departed. I continued my work unmolested for a time, and held meetings every Sunday. Shortly afterwards I baptized some more converts, and this had the effect of bringing the chief of police around to me again. He appeared to be very angry, and claimed that I had promised him that I would not give out tracts and would hold no meetings. He told me that he was a Mohammedan, and that he did not believe the doctrines of the Mor mon Church. He said that other Christian Protestants - orthodox and Armenian, had complained against me. I said that I was acquainted with the Turkish laws, and knew that he could not banish an American until he had visited an American Consulate. I also told him that I would not leave the city, because I was going to preach the Gospel there, and that he could go to the Consulate and talk the matter over with the consul. He then left me again, and I went on with my work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 12, 1905 In all the useful and philanthropic enterprises thus enumerated, and in many more that cannot now be named, it was virtually the Church that took the lead; for Brigham Young, as President and trustee-in-trust, acted as the agent of the Church in investing its means and manipulating its revenues. In this capacity he built the Deseret Telegraph line, entirely with home capi tal and home labor, only a few years after the original telegraph line crossed the continent, and before the advent of the railroad. He and other leading Mormons helped to construct the Union Pacific and Central Pacific rail roads, which on May 10, 1869, made Promontory, Utah, their place of meeting and welding point between East and West. About this time also he took the initiative in organizing Zion's Co-operative Mercantile Institution, a mam moth concern designed to unify Mormon commercial interests in the face of impending fierce competition from the outside, resulting from the coming of the railroad. He even attempted to re-establish the United Order, and succeeded in part; though his greatest success in that direction was limited to the mighty Cc-operative movement of which he was the chief instigator and promoter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: September 14, 1905 And in their triumph die; like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume: the sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, And in the taste confounds the appetite Therefore, love moderately; long love doth so Too swift arrives as tardy as-too slow. Where connubial differences occur, each Of the interested parties is likely to think the trouble lies wholly with the other and does not consider that in all probability the other has equally as much cause for complaint. Love that is blind before marriage has a remarkably keen vision afterward. If people contemplating such a union would learn to look at each other in their true light there would not be such a waste of affection before marriage nor such a famine for it later on. The spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be moderate in all things. N 0 one who properly understands the principles which the Savior taught can be an extremist. Such a one will not be too bold nor too retiring; not too violent in his love-making before the wedding nor too forgetful of his life's partner afterward. The Gospel, being the perfect law, is destined to make perfect people - people who will do everything exactly right. On the other hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 26, 1905 President John R. Winder spoke a few words respecting what President Smith said. He testified to the truth of every word spoken by the President. The funds of the Church, he said, are perfectly safe. Not a dollar is wasted. If any Latter-day Saint had any doubt on the matter, he might satisfy his mind by an examination of the books. President Anthon H. Lund was the next speaker. Like President Winder, be endorsed what President Smith had said, and he spoke from personal knowledge respecting the financial condition of the Church, He spoke of the missionary work. He declared that the young men in the Church respond cheerfully to calls made on them for missions, and it was a pleasure to read the letters which the missionaries, young and old, write home. Large quantities of printed matter had been distributed, especially in the British mission. In some of the missions large editions of the Book of Mormon had been gotten out and sold very cheaply. The French and Swedish editions of this sacred record have run out, and efforts were being made to get reprints. The work had been translated into Turkish, and would no doubt be printed shortly. Rays of Living Light, by Elder Penrose, had been translated by a non Mormon into Greek, and the people at Athens were anxious to have missionaries sent there. In the Japanese mission some progress had been made. Many had applied for baptism, but the brethren feel that the people should understand the Gospel before joining the Church. The Book of Mor mon was being translated into the Japanese language by Elder Alma 0. Taylor. There is a large Sunday school at Tokio, and the children in that city can be heard singing the songs of Zion on the streets. President Lund felt assured that the work of God would not be hindered in its progress. The Lord had declared that it should not be given to another people. We will carry forward this work, and no power can prevent us from doing so. President Francis M. Lyman was the concluding speaker of this session of the conference. Every Latter-day Saint, he said, had a testimony of the Gospel, whether he had been in the Church many years or had joined only recently. One and the same spirit animates the hearts of all of us. And so the work of God was in no danger. The Church did not originate with the Prophet Joseph; he was only the instrument of the Lord in establishing it. God was it author, and it would continue its progress unimpeded. The work is now so firmly settled that it cannot be disturbed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: October 19, 1905 The lessons are very simple, but they go very deep. Trials borne for Christ bring us to the heart of Christ. The nearer we are to Him the more calmly we shall look on the sunshine and the shadow too. It is His sunshine, and it is His shadow. Joined to Him we shall arm ourselves with the same mind, and pray for those who have wronged us or are wronging us. If they refuse to own us or receive us, let us hope for the time when the clouds will pass, and for the day of Christ, when all the flock will be gathered in the fold upon the everlasting hills. Let us pray that God will protect us and preserve us in whatever He has appointed of joy and of sorrow. Every time of trial is a time when the New Country becomes very near. We shall soon pass from the Church militant to watch from the eternal shere the tempest-tossed ser vants of our Master making for the haven, troubled on every side, but not distressed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. The extraordinary vividness and certainty with which the eternal world has been apprehended in times of persecution must strike everyone who has studied the annals of the martyrs. By bearing pain and loss in the Christian way, we shall persuade men. It shall turn unto you for a testimony, said our Lord Himself. The faithfulness unto death of Christ's witnesses has done more, perhaps, even than the preaching of the Gospel, to persuade the world that Christ lives and reigns. Could'st thou love Me when friends are failing, Because fast paling Thy fortunes flee? Could'st thou prevent thy lips from wailing, And say, 'i still have Thee'? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: January 19, 1905 This book has been published in about twelve different languages, and will yet go to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people in their own tongue as predicted by the Prophet Joseph Smith. We may add here that through the Book of Mormon and other revelations to this great Prophet, we learn that the Redeemer of the world, subsequent to His resurrection, and after His visit to the tribe of Joseph, went to the ten lost tribes of Israel, and organized His Church among them, after the same pattern as He had done at Jerusalem and on the western hemisphere. Their Prophets and Apostles received and wrote the revelations of God which were to them the scriptures of divine truth, even as the Bible was to the Jews, and the Book of Mormon to the house of Joseph. This, we are pleased to say, does not occur often among the Saints of Great Britain, but once in a while we hear of such cases, and to such, as well as to all others who contemplate some day gathering to Zion, these words are directed in the spirit of kindness and love. There have been between one and two hundred baptized in this place since we came, and Elder Kimball is now laboring about fifteen miles from this place, where he has raised a small branch of the Church, and I do not know but that it is a large one by this time. The Lord is with him and he can preach so loud and so fast that the Catholics call him a noisy devil. Brother Goodson has this day returned from Bedford and says that he left thirteen baptized into the new covenant there. Brother Richards is left with them. Brother Goodson will remain in this place with me for a' season. R Brother Snider has returned from the borders of Scotland where he and Brother Russel went to labor, and Brothers Fielding and Snider left this place yesterday to go out into the country on a mission, and will go from house to house. Brother Russel has not baptized any as yet, but he will soon, ' I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: May 4, 1905 In addition to this I am happy to say to this congregation and to all the world so far as my words may go, that we have taken the liberty to render aid to many of our missions abroad in the purchase and in the establishment of mission headquarters and the building of churches in which they can meet to worship God, and in which they will not be ashamed to invite the stranger to come and join with them. We have used the tithings of the people for this purpose, and we think that when the Church desires to call us to an account for matters of this kind there is a way by which it can be reached which will not occasion any noise or any confusion, and I trust without any misunder standing whatever. I believe we can come to a perfect understanding with reference to these matters. We have been able, also, to purchase quite a tract of land in Jackson county adjacent to the 'site that was chosen by the Prophet Joseph Smith for a temple, to be built some day; and a few of our people have generously contributed for the accomplishment of this purpose, but the most of the means that have been employed for the accomplishment of this purpose have necessarily been taken from the general tithing funds of the Church. By this means we have been able to secure elegant headquarters for our mission or for our people in the Northern States mission; we have been able to assist the Southern States mission to obtain headquarters; and we have also been enabled to assist the British mission to obtain a comfortable home and headquarters, where the star that has been published for so many years can continue to be published for the advancement of the work of the Latter-day Saints and of the Elders in the British mission. We have been able also to assist largely in the erection of commodious houses of worship in Copenhagen, Denmark, in Christiania, Norway, and in Stockholm, Sweden; and we have assisted also in obtaining headquarters for our people who live upon many islands of the sea; and we have secured a tract of land upon the island of Samoa for the purpose of gathering our Saints where they can receive the benefits of Church organization, the benefits of Sunday schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: February 2, 1905 Shortly after this visit to the revival meeting, the Christian Age of January 18th, 1905, came to our table. In looking over this number, we found an article entitled, How to Enter the Kingdom, which, it stated, was a study of the International Lesson for January 29th, 1905. The text was from John iii: 1-15. As it is our business in these lands to preach the Gospel and show to the people how to enter the kingdom of heaven, the article was of special interest. From verses one to fifteen there were three columns of comments and explanations. It tells that Nicodemus came to Jesus by night - how he came, and for what purpose. The writer quotes verse one: There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the J ews then comments on the passage. Then verse two: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Verse three continues: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. These three verses with ex planations occupy a column in the journal. Then verse six is quoted: That which is born of the flesh is flesh, etc., and thus the commentator continues to the end of the lesson. Thinking that here again was something omitted, we turned to John iii and read the chapter. The bold headline in the Christian Age article was, How to Enter the Kingdom, but the writer seemed to stop at the threshold. He had explained that a man had to be born again to see the kingdom, and had there stopped. We had always found something more in that chapter, state ments by the Savior of vitally important ordinances that had to be performed before an entrance could be had into the kingdom. The writer had entirely omitted the fourth and fifth verses of the chapter. These verses are as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: November 2, 1905 President feel beneath the lash of malevolent and relentless foes? How must he feel, they asked, after months of vituperation and abuse that are almost without parallel in the most trying history of God's people! They saw nothing in his calm and composed demeanor, save that the tone of his voice betokened that steadfast purpose and those settled convictions that have characterized his life and teachings. The conference throughout was, perhaps, somewhat more spirited than most of its predecessors, but there was nothing pronounced in the occasion until four o'clock on Sunday afternoon, when the President arose to offer a few expressions of appreciation and to announce the hymn. Looking down before him he saw the presidents of stakes on the front seats. To his right were patriarchs and other veterans whose lives of sublime integrity and devoted loyalty were in themselves an inspiration. On the stand immediately in front of him were the general authorities of the Church. To his left sat the aged mothers, the tried and true daughters of Zion. At the rear was the Tabernacle choir, from whose midst towered the great organ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: February 23, 1905 While In Ohio I continued at intervals my correspondence with the Salt Lake Herald, using the nom de plume Iago, by which I had been known at an earlier period in the Wasatch Literary association, of which I was one of the founders. But now that correspondence was a side issue, a secondary consideration, no longer monopolizing my time and attention. The kingdom of God was first. Some of the brightest and happiest of my recollections cluster around a series of letters received from President Brigham Young. The first of these released me from my former field of labor, Pennsylvania, and appointed me to remain in Ohio, under the presidency of Elder David M. Stuart, at St. Louis. In another letter-president Young commended my efforts to spread the truth, and gave me this golden advice: Never condescend to argue with the wicked; the principles of the Gospel are too sacred to be quarreled over; bear your testimony in humility, and leave the result with the Lord. He had noticed my writings in the Herald, particularly a description of the visit to Kirtland, and in his epistle he said, I would be pleased to have you corres pond freely with the Deseret News. Cultivate your gift for writing, that it may be used for the establishment of truth and righteousness upon the earth. Thus encouraged, I devoted considerable time to literary work, both in poetry and prose, and my worthy Aunt Em (emeline B. Wells) editor of the Woman's Exponent, found enough merit in some of my earliest verses to induce her to publish them. I contributed to the Deseret News, as President Young had requested, carried on a large correspondence, received visitors and explained to them the Gospel, and answered by tongue or pen every attack upon Utah and the Mormons that came to my notice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: August 10, 1905 There is a spiritually scientific and philosophic reason at the bottom of the demand for faith as the first condition of salvation. Unless we believe in God, He cannot do for us all that He desires to do. He cannot give what we are not able or not willing to receive. Therefore He says, Draw near unto Me, and I will draw near unto you. We draw near unto God by believing in Him, and if we truly believe in Him we will obey Him, thereby building upon the rock, and not upon the sand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: May 18, 1905 In common with all books, the Book of Mormon has its spirit, produces its effects upon the minds of men; and as it claims to.be a work originally written and also translated through the inspiration of God, and deals primar ily with sacred things, it is to be expected that the spirit of this book will have not only a good, but even a divine influence; that it will be of a faith promoting, doubt-dispersing, comfort-bringing character. Its effect upon the minds of men, therefore, may be another test of its claims to a divine origin and to that test I now submit it. In his work entitled, My First Mission, the late President George Q. Cannon makes the following statement respecting the influence exerted over his spirit by reading the Book of Mormon under the trying conditions in which he was placed while serving as a missionary in the Hawaiian Islands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: November 9, 1905 President Grover in an opening address welcomed Saints and friends to the conference. Elders George F. Webb, John S. Boyer, J r., and Martin T. Bushman felt to rejoice in the work of the Lord and bore faithful testimonies to the same. President Grant then said, among other things, that the possession of a testimony was not enough, but that it was required of us to live up to that testimony. He showed by apt illustrations the onesidedness of living only one phase of our religion; that doing is what counts, and that those who leave the Church are the ones who are neglectful of their duties. In the afternoon meeting Elders Horace W. Vincent, J. Delbert Bushnell, Thomas W. West, and James P. Cameron spoke briefly on the first principles of the Gospel. President Grant referred to the testimony presented to the world by the example of Mormon Elders. He also examined into and refuted many of the false charges against the Latter-day Saints. Two fine solos were sung by Sister E. E. Woods, and Elder Edwin F. Tout. Elders Charles M. Bell, Jr Ira J. Boyce, Robert Pike, Hugh B. Brown, and Edwin F. Tout spoke at the evening service. President Grant spoke on the sacrifice and forbearance exhibited by the Latter-day Saints, and concluded with a powerful testimony of the truth of Mormonism. Again in this service we were favored with two solos by Elder Tout. President Grover expressed his gratitude for the blessings of the Lord and left with those present his testimony of the truth. Monday morning President Grant met with the Elders in Priesthood meet ing, in which he gave good counsel to those present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: December 28, 1905 Joseph smith's claim to divine authority may be tested by the doctrines he taught. If these lead us out from the dark, narrow cells of current theo logy into the sunlight of truth, where, in every direction are unlimited and soul-satisfying vistas of the goodness and greatness of God, then may we not pronounce these doctrines divine?
