Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: August 13, 1903 Savior. _this is because the people have become acquainted with the name of the Savior and have learned from the Jewish Scriptures very much in regard to the Lord and the doctrines that were new in His day. His mission was a new revelation to them. The doctrines He then presented were different from those entertained in the world. The Christian world today have learned many of His doctrines, and although it is difficult for any to embrace the whole, yet all Christians embrace many of them. Hence we come to a people who have a portion of faith in the Savior. We come to a Christian people who have the Bible before them and are well acquainted with its doctrines, and who have learned a great deal from the Savior and His disciples. We now find men with the courage to accept the Gospel. The Christian spirit is more tolerant, than it used to be. The people are better prepared to tolerate the truth than they were anciently. When we come with the message of life and salvation, we find the world measurably prepared for our doctrines. They are in sympathy with the teachings of the Bible, not only of the Old Testament, but the New Testament also, hence our way is comparatively easy. The Lord has revealed the truth in these last days from the heavens. He has restored His word and commanded His disciples to preach it in all the world. He has revealed Himself to the Prophet Joseph Smith, and how necessary it was, for there had not been prop Ts on the earth for eighteen hundred years! Although people lived in Christian world, the living oracles were not among them. There have been many churches; they have labored faithfully with their ministers for the salvation of the people, but they have not enjoyed the holy priesthood. You remember that the Church of the Savior was not tolerated. He Himself was destroyed, as His Apostles were also. The world was not prepared at' that time to receive the message He had, hence His authority and His Church were withdrawn from men, or were driven from among them. It was necessary after eighteen hundred years that the Lord should commence to reveal Himself to the children of men. For no man that lived during that length of time knew the Father, nor had any man lived that knew the Savior. No representatives, no authorized servants of the Lord had been upon the earth during that time. If they had they would have known the Father and Jesus Christ. They would have possessed the Holy Ghost, and would have been taught by its power. The heavens would have been opened as they were to the Son of God, and the Holy Ghost would have descended upon those properly baptized. They would have known the Father and the Son. If the Christian world had had the proper authority among them they would have been one to-day instead of being numerous churches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: August, 1903 On the way to the hotel We were surprised and interested by a custom that has since grown very familiar to us. Our cabman was evidently religious (though he did not scruple at demanding over twice the agreed and regular price at the end of the drive), and whenever he passed a church or shrine in the street he took off his strange-looking hat with his left hand, and made the sign of the cross with the right by touching his forehead, lower part of chest and shoulders. The falling rain did not deter him. Naturally this is an awkward thing for drivers to do, and many times they drop their reins for the moment while they attend to their worship. A curious coincidence at the hotel was that President Lyman found, shortly after becoming located, that in the adjoining room on one side Elder John F. Home was living and on the other Elder Kenneth Crismon had taken up his abode. These Elders from Germany had attended the dedication services at Christiania, and later visited Stockholm, thence sailing to St. Petersburg. Religious conditions among the Russians are naturally the most interesting subject to us, and to learn these was one of 'the motives President Lyman had for making the journey. There are many and conflicting currents of religion here; many that are deep and hidden which are not learned or understood without intimate association with the people. But in few places is it possible to see and at least partly understand the religion of the great majority. We went into the Kasan cathedral soon after arriving, and there saw a scene of most active worship. Russian churches have no seats, and there is room for the devotee to kneel or prostrate himself if he wishes. People of all classes were there. Beggars in their rags (their purpose being to obtain charity), the lame, the halt, the blind, laboring people, richly clad men and women, officers of the army, all kissed the same icons, made the cross and bowed before the images, and in some cases kneeled and touched their foreheads to the floor. One poor fellow, evidently with a heavy weight on his conscience, we noticed when we entered, making the cross, kneeling, bowing to the floor and rising again only to repeat the movements. During the whole time we were there he continued. The only thing to break the monotony of it was that some times he remained down for a few moments and smote his breast with his hand. The churches are open all day and the people come in and usually go out after a few moments' worship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: February 19, 1903 This is in accordance with the doctrine of Christ as it is revealed in the New Testament; it is in accordance with the word of God as it has been revealed in the latter day through the Prophet Joseph Smith. God will not condemn any man to utter destruction, neither shall any man be thrust down to hell irredeemably, until he has been brought to the possession of the greater light that comes through repentance and obedience to the laws and command ments of God; but if, after he has received light and knowledge, he shall Sin against that light and will not repent, then, indeed, he becomes a lost soul, a son of perdition! The question is often asked, Is there any difference between the Spirit of the Lord and the Holy Ghost? The terms are frequently used synonymously. We often say the Spirit of God when we mean the Holy Ghost; we likewise say the Holy Ghost when we mean the Spirit of God. The Holy Ghost is a personage in the Godhead and it is not that which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. It is the Spirit of God which proceeds through Christ to the world, that enlightens every man that comes into the world, and that strives with the children of men, and will continue to strive with them, until it brings them to a knowledge of the truth, and to the possession of the greater light and testimony of the Holy Ghost. If, however, he receive that greater light, and then sin against it, the Spirit of God will cease to strive with him, and the Holy Ghost will wholly depart from him. Then will he perse cute the truth; then will he seek the blood of the innocent; then will he not scruple at the commission of any crime, except so far as he may fear the penalties of the law, in consequence of the crime, upon himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 8, 1903 Then again these mobs are growing rapidly in numbers so that those engaged in torturing and hanging number thousands when formerly the mob did not consist of more than forty or fifty men. President Roosevelt gave the best summary of the situation that has yet appeared when he said: The spirit of lawlessness grows with what it feeds on, and when mobs with impunity lynch criminals for one crime, they are certain to begin to lynch real or alleged criminals for other causes. Nobody in the world deplores more than do the Latter-day Saints the pre valence and brutality of mob violence. If mob violence in this country did not have its origin in the drivings and persecutions of the Latter-day Saints, it is certain that no class of people in this country have suffered more and longer from the lawlessness of the mob than have the Latter-day Saints. For more than half a century the Mormons have been the victims of lawless mob violence against which very little has been said, for the chief reason that the victims had been so long pursued by hatred and prejudice that the world had been taught to withdraw all its sympathy from them. Whipping, driving, and shooting Mormon Elders in the south called forth no anxiety and little objection upon the part of the press; and the Mormon Elder, pure and up right in his life, has received less sympathy and protest in his favor than the negro ravisher who deserved, perhaps, the punishment, however inexcusable the method of executing it. It is a precious boon to stand with all men face to face equal before the law and to live under a government where the orderly and just execution of the law prevails. We have always believed as a people that those who mobbed us, and that the country at large which acquiesced in mob violence were sowing to the wind and that some day the country would reap the whirlwind. That the prevalence of mob violence is a direct menace to the institutions of our country no one need to doubt who reads the comments of the press upon the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: September 3, 1903 Now, in relation to the government of our Church; a word or two in order that we may understand it. In the first place, I lay down the principle, which I think is an infallible one - one that we must be governed by, - that is, that the priesthood after the order of the Son of God is the ruling, presiding, authority in the Church. It is divided into its various parts - the Melchizedek and the Aaronic - and all the quorums or councils are organized in the Church, each with special duties and special callings not clashing with each other, but all harmonious and united. In other words, there is no government in the Church of Jesus Christ separate and apart, above, or outside of, the holy priesthood or its authority. We have our Relief Societies, Mutual Improve ment associations, Primary associations, and Sunday schools, and we may organize, if we choose, associations for self-protection, and self-help among ourselves, not subject to our enemies, but for our good and the good of our people, but these organizations are not quorums or councils of the priesthood, but are auxiliary to, and under it; organized by virtue of the holy priesthood. They are not outside of, nor above it, nor beyond its reach. They acknowledge the principle of the holy priesthood. Wherever they are they always exist with the view of accomplishing some good; some soul's salvation temporal or spiritual. When we have a Relief Society, it is thus organized. It has its president and other officers, for the complete and perfect accomplishment of the purposes of its organization. When it meets, it proceeds as an independent organization, always mindful of the fact that it is such, by virtue of the authority of the holy priesthood which God has instituted. If the president of the stake comes into a meeting of the Relief Society, the sisters, through their president, would at once pay deference to him; would consult and advise with him, and receive directions from the presiding head. That head is the Bishop, in the ward, the president, in the stake, the presidency of the Church, in all the Church. The Young Ladies' and Young Men's associations, the Primary associations, and the Sunday schools are the same. All are under the same head, and the same rules apply to each. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: January 22, 1903 It would be better if every Elder who is a father rose to the dignity of his position, and officiated in his holy office within his family organization. He may call to his aid any others who are worthy holders of the requisite author ity in the Priesthood, but it is his privilege to stand as the head of his house hold, and to perform the ordinances pertaining to his family. The question arises, and has recently been presented in specific form, If an Elder performs the ordinance of naming and blessing his own child at home, is it necessary that the ordinance be repeated in the ward meeting? We answer, No the father's blessing is authoritative, proper, and sufficient. But every such case must be promptly reported to the Bishop of the ward, who will direct the clerk to make full and proper record of the matter, entering the name of the child, with date of birth and blessing, and all data as to parentage, etc., on the books of the ward. It is the duty of the Teachers and Priests in their house to house visitations among the people to see that all such reports are fully and promptly made. The repetition of the ordinance of naming and blessing children tends to diminish our regard for the authority and sanctity attending the father's blessing within the household. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: November 12, 1903 The speaker read a passage from the eleventh chapter of Deuteronomy and another from a section of the Doctrine and Covenants to show that the teach ings of the authorities of the Church to-day are the same as have always been taught by the servants of God. He admonished the Saints to daily read a chapter of the Bible, Book of Mormon, or the other standard Church works before their families. He felt anxious that we should impress the world with the fact that we love the Savior. He spoke of the influence of education, not only of the Church schools, but also of the district schools. He advised the Saints to send their children to the district schools, and not take them out at the sixth or seventh grade. He hoped that the Saints would see that their children are properly educated. He bore his testimony to the truth. The choir then sang, We thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet, and benedic tion was pronounced by Elder David H. Cannon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: April 2, 1903 In public life, in social intercourse, in the struggle for supremacy, we are constantly lacerating the feelings of others, and the wounds inflicted upon our feelings may be a hundred fold more painful than those that tear asunder the flesh. But the duty of life is ever demanding that wherever wounds are found, be they wounds of the flesh or wounds of the heart, they shall be healed. So the business of life, after all, consists so largely in the duty of making things right, that we cannot permit ourselves to imagine for one moment that we have left nothing undone, or that in the brush and bustle of human activities some tender spot may not have been wounded or some feeling bruised. The cultivation of kindly thoughts towards others is always helpful in the art of healing. It is sometimes helpful to lift ourselves out of our own shells in which, by our surroundings and habits of thought, we are incrusted, and place ourselves in the positions which others occupy in life. Constant con sideration for the welfare and happiness of others is every day imposed upon us by the divine injunction, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: September 17, 1903 The inspired teachings of Moroni appeal to our reason. His great argument in favor of miracles, a part of which we have copied, is incontrovertible. If wonders were wrought by the faith of the Lord and His servants in former times, unless God alters, the same faith will bring forth similar blessings now. The absence of miracles cannot be accounted for by saying that knowledge is so extended that the need of these gifts has passed away. If Paul and his companions saw through a glass darkly, the best of men now can hardly claim a clearer vision; that which is perfect has not yet come. Jesus Himself being a doer of miracles, Christians will surely not maintain seriously that they are superfluous. On the face of this broad earth just as ignorant beings can be found now as were those with whom the Lord mingled, if it is thought that miracles were only for the ignorant. This, however, we will not admit. The Savior was no charlatan who played upon the ignorance of the people. It was among those who had faith that He performed His wondrous works. Where there was little faith He withheld His blessings. We can best conclude as Moroni declares that God ceased to do miracles among the children of men because they had dwindled in unbelief, departed from the right way, and no longer knew7 the God in whom they should trust. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: December 17, 1903 In Abraham we have another example of devotion to the word of God, and faith in ultimately sharing His goodness. The gracious promises to him were fulfilled, even as they were in the end to Job, who, notwithstanding his sore afflictions, was finally blessed with great abundance in all things, and came into possession of twice his former blessings in material prosperity; and possessed many sons and daughters. The Lord blest his last days more than his beginning, and he lived to see his fair daughters obtain an inheritance among their brethren, and saw his sons' sons, even four generations. And at length he passed to his rich reward full of days. And so in Abraham's willingness to trust in God in the greatest trial that could come to a father - the sacrifice of his son - we observe deep-rooted faith and abiding confidence in the Almighty being able and willing to fulfill His promises, no matter how improbable it might appear under the most trying circumstances. Having an assurance that his course, in offering his son Isaac, was agreeable to the will of the Lord, Abraham was enabled, in the face of the improbability of all the promises being fulfilled, that he was to be the father of many nations, and that in Isaac should that covenant be established, to place that son upon the altar of sacrifice, and to stretch forth his hand and knife to slay him. But when the Lord saw that Abraham feared Him, He permitted His angel to supply a ram for sacrifice instead, and blessed the Father of nations for his Confidence and faith. And so will He do with all who trust Him, for the promise is unto all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: April 23, 1903 Now, I do not desire to prolong my remarks this morning. I pray God to bless those who may speak to us and inspire them to say those things that will be instructive and beneficial, and that we all may enjoy that measure of the spirit of intelligence that we may divine rightly the word of truth, and that we all may receive meat in due season. That God may grant us these privileges and blessings is my prayer, in the name of Jesus. Amen. Elder seymour B. Young, of the First Seven Presidents of Seventies, was the next speaker. He was grateful to the Lord for the prosperity that attends the Saints everywhere. He had a testimony to bear - the same testimony that he had always borne. He rejoiced in the fact that our young people had so many opportunities of advancement and culture. Yet he regretted that there was so little manual training in our system of education. President Brigham Young used to teach this idea as a necessary part of every educational system. In speaking thus, Elder Young explained that he was not inclined to find fault with what the noble and devoted men and women were doing for our young people, both in our Church schools and in the auxiliary organizations of the Church. But he felt nevertheless that we ought to do more in the way of teaching manual training than we do. Our schools will always remain incomplete until they have departments where the mechanical arts are taught. Throughout our communities the Saints are in comparative comfort. In our outlying settlements it is a very rare thing to find an indigent person. There are exceptions to that in this city, for which there are sufficient reasons. But on the whole our people are very prosperous. And there are many evi deuces that there is improvement. We can see, in every stake, that the words of our leaders have been heeded. Especially is this the case with respect to the principle of tithing. The blessings of the Lord have been poured out upon the people yery markedly. Along with this prosperity, however, there may be noted an increase of. Op position. It has always been true that where the people of God are prosperous the powers of evil are more active. The Saints must expect, therefore, that Satan and his hosts will be the more alert. The powers of darkness are always arrayed against the power of light. Recently we have had an example of this in the treatment some of our missionaries have received in our own country. The speaker quoted a saying of the Prophet Joseph Smith to the effect that this antagonism would continue until the Lord overthrows the power of the devil. The only important consideration for us in this respect is that we de termine to withstand all the attacks made by the adversary of good. The Prophet Joseph was especially tried; and so were those men who succeeded him. No one can point to these and say truthfully that they ever failed in their allegiance to the Lord. The only reason Why they were persecuted was that they had been called of the Lord and they proved true to this sacred trust only because they knew their calling to be of God. Knowing this, they were strong in the power of the Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
