This Latin reader will present passages of 3-10 lines taken from Classical authors (including Caesar, Catullus, Cicero, Martial, Ovid, Vergil, etc.and inscriptions. The selections will consist of lively unadapted passages suitable for elementary and intermediate level Latin students. These passages will be annotated in such a way that instructors can use them in a wide variety of classroom settings. The selections will be arranged to emphasizecertain points of grammar and syntax (case use: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, and Ablative; Pronouns; Ablative Absolutes; Relative Clauses; Indirect Statement; Subordinate Clauses; Subjunctive Verbs; and Conditionals). The arrangement of topics and the length of the passages is intended to provide the highest degree of flexibility in the classroom: a single selection could provide additional practice in syntax and translation during the first or last few minutes of a class session; a series of selections couldprovide the foundation of a class meeting; selections could be used for practice and/or testing in translating at sight; or the entire reader could be used as the foundation of a comprehensive review and transition into intermediate and advanced Latin. In essence, this reader will expose students ofLatin to extended passages of unadapted Latin from a wide variety of important authors at the earliest stage in language instruction. This early exposure to Classical authors will enable students to transition more easily from beginning and intermediate Latin textbooks to authentic Latin prose andpoetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Peralta Maps: Volume 2: The Latin Heart continues the journey that began in the previous volume of this series, which revealed the signs leading to the treasure of the Church of Santa Fe. Now authors Robert L. and Lynda R. Kesselring discuss how the maps, particularly the Latin Heart Map, enabled them to find the site of the Peralta battle, where the family had hidden their thirty-one caches of bullion as well as what may be the Lost Dutchman Mine. This volume shares the Kesselrings' scientific analysis and interpretation and shows the physical evidence that supports their claim. While providing insight into historical lore and legend, Reading Peralta Maps: Volume 2: The Latin Heart reveals the location of a cache in the Superstition Mountains and shows the underground images of bullion bars. Including GPS directions, this guide reveals the location of the sites for visitation.

The 88 excerpts in volume one provide foundational and riveting first-hand accounts of life in colonial Latin America. The second volume retains most of the modern period sources from the ninth edition but with some significant additions including new readings on popular culture, ideologies of modernization, revolution and dictatorship, as well as new sources that reflect the latest events and trends. The 84 excerpts in volume two provide foundational and often riveting first-hand accounts of life in modern Latin America. Concise introductions for chapters and excerpts provide essential context for understanding the primary sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly sixty years, Wheelock's Latin has remained the opitmus liber of beginning Latin textbooks. When Professor Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin first appeared in 1956, the reviews extolled its thoroughness, organization, and conciseness; one reviewer predicted that the book "might well become the standard text" for introducing students to elementary Latin. Now, nearly six decades later, that prediction has certainly proved accurate. This new edition of Wheelock's Latin has all of the features, many of them improved and expanded, that have made it the bestselling single-volume beginning Latin textbook: 40 chapters with grammatical explanations and readings drawn from the works of Rome's major prose and verse writers; Self-tutorial exercises, each with an answer key, for independent study; An extensive English–Latin/Latin–English vocabulary section; A rich selection of original Latin readings—unlike other Latin textbooks, which contain primarily made-up texts; Etymological aids, maps, and dozens of images illustrating aspects of the classical culture and mythology presented in the chapter readings. Also included are expanded notes on the literary passages, comments on vocabulary, and translation tips; new comprehension and discussion questions; and new authentic classical Latin readings, including Roman graffiti, in every chapter.
