Each of the approximately 175 compositions is considered, at least briefly, with fuller appreciation accorded to such masterpieces as Emendemus in Melius, Tristitia et anxietas, Iusorum animae, Ave verum corpus, the lamentations and the three famous masses. There are more than sixty musical examples, some of considerable length. In critical prose that slights neither technicalities nor the intense emotional qualities of his subject matter, the author sheds fresh and often unexpected illumination on Byrd's musical rhetoric and on his powerful, endlessly inventive musical structures. Re-examining the known facts of Byrd's life in relation to the patronage and politics of the time, the author boldly argues that while the impetus behind Byrd's early motets was primarily traditionalist and technical, that behind his Cantiones sacrae motets of the 1580s was essentially political: they were covert laments and protests on behalf of the embattled recusant community.

Book excerpt: Mattias Lundberg investigates the historical role of a deviant psalm-tone, the tonus peregrinus, focusing on its applications in polyphonic music within all major branches of Western liturgy. Throughout the remarkably persistent tradition of applying this melody to polyphony, from the ninth century right up to the twenty-first, coeval music theory is able to shed light on the problems it has posed to modal and tonal practice at various historical stages. The musical settings studied hold up a mirror to the general development of psalmody, concerning practices of organum, diverse regional forms of fauxbourdon, cantus firmus composition, free imitation, parody, fugue, quodlibet, monody, and many other compositional techniques where the unique features of the psalm-tone have necessitated modification of existing practices. The conclusions drawn reveal a musico-liturgical tradition that was not in real danger of extinction until the general decline of Western liturgy that followed in the eighteenth century, at which point the historiography of the tonus peregrinus became a factor stimulating scholarly and musical interest in its alleged pre-Christian origins. Lundberg demonstrates that the succession of works based on the tonus peregrinus often preserved a distinctly conservative musical and theological conception even during periods of drastic liturgical reform.

Book excerpt: Within a culture of rapidly shifting religious ideas, music of the German-speaking lands began to slip into obscurity in the sixteenth century. It took the work of a few key players in an often dangerous climate of reformation to transform music from archaism to successful high art. Ludwig Senfl (c. 1486-1543) was one of those players, and as Kapellmeister for Wilhelm IV in Munich, he achieved such musical success that the sounds emanating from his chapel choir became what Martin Luther would describe as the best music in all of Germany. Senfl accomplished this through his expansive oeuvre, connections to the highest nobility and the most famous reformers, skill in text setting and florid polyphonic writing, and most of all his contribution to the crystallization of new genres, namely the psalm motet.The psalm motet grew out of Josquin Desprez’s (1450-1521) “experiments” at setting complete psalm texts as Latin motets at the turn of the sixteenth century. The psalm motet, at the pen of Josquin, was a subgenre, not widely-enough known by composer, printer, or patron to be considered a stand-alone. However, Senfl chose to set several full psalms and several psalm verses as motets, often for major religious or political events such as the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, noble weddings, or personal favors and gifts. His eleven full psalm motets all followed a general sectional formula and musical language, creating an observable continuity across the pieces.This thesis explores how Senfl’s career alludes to new ideas of his religious loyalty, punctuated by his psalm motets, personal and business connections, his whereabouts, and other details of his life. I analyze his psalm motets in their divided contexts of Catholic and Protestant reception, revealing how this unique genre, amidst the largest Christian schism of history, forms a bridge between the two warring sides. Lastly, I investigate Senfl’s influence in both later successors at the Munich Hofkapelle and equally leading composers across the English Channel through the lens of psalm motets’ place in politics and musical development. The genre, through Senfl’s pen, achieved remarkably quick formation in just a few decades and became a symbol of religious reformation.
