Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing back in time, life through the 1950’s. This is a great untold story. A unique adventure into a world of wild imagination. The struggle of two families for survival. One, firmly seeking to look in the right direction. The other with tremendous inclination for wrong doings. Both victims of their own ignorance. THE LAST RED SUNSET describes with complete details the knowing-mess that ignorance can create. And how it impacts the life of others for better or worse. Taking me back in time to my childhood in 1970’s, connecting me to some sources of strange events. The novel tells the unthinkable adventure of three brothers that sat foot in a remote farm in 1955, the struggle for survival, and their tragic demise. And those that once lived under the rain of happiness and fear around them. Just living the life day by day, even if that day was destined to be the last red sunset.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the Soviet system fail? How is it that a political order, born of revolution, perished from stagnation? What caused a seemingly stable polity to collapse? Philip Roeder finds the answer to these questions in the Bolshevik "constitution"--the fundamental rules of the Soviet system that evolved from revolutionary times into the post-Stalin era. These rules increasingly prevented the Communist party from responding to the immense social changes that it had itself set in motion: although the Soviet political system initially had vast resources for transforming society, its ability to transform itself became severely limited. In Roeder's view, the problem was not that Soviet leaders did not attempt to change, but that their attempts were so often defeated by institutional resistance to reform. The leaders' successful efforts to stabilize the political system reduced its adaptability, and as the need for reform continued to mount, stability became a fatal flaw. Roeder's analysis of institutional constraints on political behavior represents a striking departure from the biographical approach common to other analyses of Soviet leadership, and provides a strong basis for comparison of the Soviet experience with constitutional transformation in other authoritarian polities.

Book excerpt: A searing first hand account of China's Cultural Revolution that joins the ranks of great memoirs such as Life and Death in Shanghai, Wild Swans and A Chinese Odyssey First banned in its native land, this earthy, unflinching memoir has become one of the biggest bestsellers in the history of China. In 1968, a fervent young Red Guard joined the army of hotheaded adolescents who trekked to Inner Mongolia to spread the Cultural Revolution. After gaining a reputation as a brutal abuser of the local herd owners and nomads, Ma Bo casually criticized a Party Leader. Denounced as an “active counterrevolutionary” and betrayed by his friends, the idealistic youth was brutally beaten and imprisoned. Charged with passion, never doctrinaire, Blood Red Sunset is a startlingly vivid and personal narrative that opens a window on the psyche of totalitarian excess that no other work of history can provide. This is a tale of ideology and disillusionment, a powerful work of political and literary importance. “A deceptively straightforward story carried forward by deep currents of insight.”—The Washington Post “A genuine, no-holds-barred, unadorned piece of writing…echoing the realities of contemporary China.”—Liu Binyan, The New York Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Gill Hilton was born and raised in Baytown, Texas. She attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and received a B.A. Degree in Art and Education. She later received a Masters of Education Degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. She married Bob Hilton and together, worked in the Texas public school system for the entirety of their careers. They have three children, Steven, Suzanne and David, all of whom are now grown, and six wonderful grandchildren. Now retired, Evelyn and Bob live between Brownwood and Bangs in the beautiful northern hill country of Texas. Evelyn is an avid artist, as well as a writer. She has always loved to travel, and, aside from frequenting Mexico, has visited Canada and even Japan. When she is not writing, drawing illustrations for her books, or painting pictures for friends, Evelyn is traveling with her husband and enjoying their grandchildren. Annabelle and the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, Evelyn Hilton's second book and the sequel to her first book, Kidnapped by Pirates, is told from the perspective of a porcelain doll, Annabelle, who has been bought for Laura by her brother, Ben. During the first week of September, 1900, a massive, unexpected hurricane prowls into the Gulf of Mexico and heads straight for Galveston Island. Laura's family must find a way to survive this deadliest storm ever to hit America. In a most unconventional escape devised by Ben, the family survives, to rebuild their lives. This account is based on the true story of the monster hurricane, which killed over seven thousand people and virtually wiped Galveston off the map. More importantly, this tale provides the reader with insight into the brave, frontier men, women and children, who settled the Texas coastland and, despite extreme hardships, paved the way for future generations.
