'but while these volumes were passing through the press, a work named The New France was published. To prevent confusion arising between the two books, recourse has been had to Dumas' title Le Dernier Roi des Francais (paris, Souverain, 1852, 8 vols. In. Book excerpt: Fort Niagara is located twelve miles downriver from the world-renowned Niagara Falls, yet few visitors to either site know this was once Iroquois territory and claimed by France. This volume summarizes the fascinating span of North American history when New France was established during the sixteenth century in present-day Canada, explored, and expanded to the Niagara River — a strategic water and portage route connected to the Great Lakes. Chronologically the authors dramatically trace how the Iroquois gained the Niagara River, and how they kept this lucrative trade route for themselves long after the French became established fur traders in the Great Lakes. The Iroquois continued to control the Niagara River as the French built the short-lived Forts Conti (1669), Denonville (1687/1688), and finally Fort Niagara (1726-1759). Fort Niagara: The Key to the Inland Oceans and the French Movement to Dominate North America incorporates actions and political changes elsewhere that influenced the French and Iroquois at Niagara, especially during the French and Indian War, which ended the French Occupation of Fort Niagara and set the stage for the Iroquois to lose their long-held Niagara River territory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young interprets codification as part of a larger process that included the collapse of the Lower Canadian rebellions, the decline of seigneurialism, expansion of bourgeois democracy in central Canada, professionalization of the bar, and formation of the institutional state. Central to codification was a profound ideological shift in Lower Canadian society that gave priority to exchange and individual property rights. Young examines the evolution of codification from its nationalist origins in the 1820s and 1830s into a Civil Code that was integral to Confederation and became a flagship of bilingualism in Quebec. The formation of the commission, the work of the codifiers, and the reaction of the anglophone minority and the Roman Catholic hierarchy are considered, as is the Code's meticulous blending of a conservative social vision with the principles of freedom of property. The Politics of Codification will be of great interest to students of law, members of the legal professions, and Canadian social and legal historians.

This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colourful and exciting unit history of the King's Royal Rifle Corps which originated in Britain's wars in the Americas during the 18th and 19th centuries under the first of its great battalion commanders, Henri Bouquet. In this first of five volumes, the unit is continually in action in America, Canada and the Caribbean. In the Seven Years' War with France (1756-1763) its battle honours included Fort William Henry; the siege of Louisbourg; Ticonderoga; and the capture of Forts Frontenac and Duquesne. The unit fought under General James Wolfe on the Heights of Abraham to take Quebec, and its commander, Jeffrey, Lord Amherst, wrested Montreal from the French. Its final action in the war was the capture of the Caribbean island of Martinique. The Corps helped put down the revolt of the famous Ottawa Algonquin Indian chief Pontiac in 1763-64; defeating him at the battle of Bushy Run and lifting the siege of Fort Pitt. In the American War of Indpendence (1775-1783) the unit took part in the brilliant action at Briar Creek and successfully defended Savannah, but failed to hold St Vincent and west Florida. Run down after Britain's loss of the United States, it was resurrected and expanded during the French Revoutionary wars, capturing Tobago and Martinique (again!) as well as St Lucia, and brieflty held Guadeloupe. In the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 with the US, the unit again saw action, capturing Martinique for a third time and fighting in and against Spain. With nine appendices, 12 illustrations and 7 maps.
