Fact and fiction intermix seamlessly as he endeavors to unravel a secret passionately guarded by four old soldiers who swore an oath never to reveal it. The Last Jump is a war story, a mystery, a love tale and a narrative of valor and honor about the gritty men and women who won World War II. The reader is transported back to a time when Americans stood shoulder to shoulder in defense of their nation. It was an imperfect America, with all its incredible virtues and vexing shortcomings, that struggled with racial and gender issues while fighting for its very survival. As our protagonist reaches out to these aging veterans to solve the puzzle, he uncovers truths he could never have imagined including the shocking conclusion. Visit our website Send me your comments

Book excerpt: Time travel has been used to stop the birth of Christ, altering the timeline of human history. Lukas is the last Qumranian, an ancient sect sworn to secrecy and to protect the prophecies that bind the worlds together. When they develop a powerful technology that can control time, their discovery attracts unwanted attention. When the Unclean -- a militant force powered by dark magic -- attack the hidden Qumranian compound under what once was the Dead Sea, Lukas barely escapes. But at what cost? With his life intact, he finds himself a prisoner in an alternate timeline not his own. Alone in a foreign landscape ravaged by wars, advanced by technology, oppressed by a corporation partnered with a ruthless religious group slaughtering any who oppose them in the streets, sinister supernatural forces, and an artifact that literally can -- and has -- changed human history, Lukas must not only struggle to stay alive, but locate the only thing that can prevent the Unclean and the powers that control them from destroying the world. Will Lukas manage to retrieve the artifact before more damage is done to the timeline of history, or will he be too late, forever lost in a nightmarish alternate reality?

Book Synopsis Energy Dissipators and Hydraulic Jump by : Willi H. Hager
Download or read book Energy Dissipators and Hydraulic Jump written by Willi H. Hager and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stilling basins utili z ing a hydraulic jump for energy dissipation are w i d e l y used in hydraulic engineering . D a Vinci was the first to describe the hydraulic jump, and Bidone conducted classical experiments about 170 years ago . Stilling basins w e r e developed in the thirties with signif- cant design improvements being made during the last sixty years . Although w e l l - a c c e p t e d guidelines for a successful design are presently available, the information for the design of such dissipators is not yet compiled in book form . This book provides state-of-the-art information on hydraulic jumps and associat ed stilling basins . A large numbe r of papers on the to pics are reviewed. T h e present trends of the art of designing a stilli ng basin are discussed and ideas for future research are outlined. Design criteria and recommendat ions are frequently given . However, this should not be considered as a r eady-to -use guideline since the design of an effective stilling basin is much more comple x than following general design steps . The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 on hydraulic jumps is c- prised of chapters 2 to 5. Part 2 consisting of chapters 6 to 14 deals with various hydraulic structures used to dissipate energy. The lists of notation and references are provided in each part separately although the same notation is u sed throughout.

[a] comeback queen."Glamour "Picabo rules... America's irrepressible ski champion."Skiing Olympic Champion Picabo Street is golden once again The moment she burst onto the world stage at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, 23-year-old speed demon Picabo Street ignited a fire of excitement in the media and in the hearts of fans that continues to burn today. Free-spirited and outspoken, Street was a new kind of female athlete and a new kind of role model. Street followed her silver medal win with two straight World Cup downhill titlesa feat unmatched in American skiingand finally, the ultimate Olympic gold medal win in Nagano in 1998. But success had its price. Just one month after her gold medal win, Street careened off course in a race in Switzerland, snapping her left femur in two, shredding the ligament in her right knee, and leaving her future in peril. Now, after two years of excruciating pain, grueling rehabilitation, and stunning personal growth, Street is making a comeback, ready to face the 2002 Winter Olympics and ready to tell her inspiring story. In this powerful, honest autobiography, Street shares her coming-of-age experience, revealing how adversity shaped a rebellious tomboy into a champion athlete and compassionate woman, in harmony with her family and at peace with her fear of failure. Here, for the first time, Street addresses the pressures exerted on her by her ski sponsors that may have been partly to blame for her terrible crash; the scandals surrounding the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee; and how she overcame a lengthy, debilitating depression. In the tradition of Lance Armstrong's It's Not About the Bike and Greg Louganis's Breaking the Surface, Picabo: Nothing to Hide is a poignant, intimate account of a woman forced to rebuild herselfbody, mind, and soul. "I learned what all girls need to learn: that you can kick ass, and you should never be ashamed of it."Picabo Street
