Book excerpt: For the past forty years, but for only the first time in history, Christian scholars fluent in Hebrew and living in the land of Israel have collaborated with Jewish scholars to examine Jesus' sayings from a Judaic and Hebraic perspective. The result of this research confirms that Jesus was an organic part of the diverse social and religious landscape of Second Temple-period Judaism. He, like other Jewish sages of his time, used specialized methods to teach foundational Jewish theological concepts such as God's abundant grace. Jesus' teaching was revolutionary in a number of ways, particularly in three areas: his radical interpretation of the biblical commandment of mutual love; his call for a new morality; and his idea of the Kingdom of Heaven. Jerusalem Studies in the Synoptic Gospels, the initial volume, focuses on the Passion Narratives in a search for the Historical Jesus. It also reexamines the synoptic problem in light of recent historical and archaeological research. The volume represents the first attempt by members and associates of the Jerusalem School to apply collectively the methodology pioneered by Robert Lindsey and David Flusser. Included in the volume is the final article written by the late Professor Flusser, The Synagogue and the Church in the Synoptic Gospels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1941, The Historic Mission of Jesus is one of the landmark texts on the life of Jesus, his relation to the Father and his earthly task. Counter to the prevailing scepticism of the reliability of the Synoptic sources chronicling Jesus' life, Cadoux presents a sweeping yet detailed illustration of the evidence, while advancing theories for its interpretation that would go on to be significant facets of New-Testament study. While not going to the same lengths as Albert Schweitzer, Cadoux nevertheless advances a thoroughly eschatological interpretation of Jesus' self-perception. He thus emphasises the nation-wide character of his appeal, his concern for the redemption of the Gentiles through Israel's fulfilment of the universalistic aspirations of the Old Testament, his eager endeavour to avert a military clash between the Jews and the Roman Empire, and his early expectation of being accepted and loyally followed by his fellow-countrymen as a whole. The result is a prime early example of the revival of interest in the historical Jesus on theological grounds.

Book excerpt: Wearing the same sandals I use when I portray Jesus in my one-man play, Road to Bethany, I walked the Stations of the Cross, collecting the same dirt from Jerusalem in my toes that Jesus did, then trudged up Mt. Olive. In the summer of 1992, I visited Israel intent on experiencing place-locations for my play. I went where He went, from the Dead Sea north to the shores of Galilee and beyond to the source of the Jordan River. After this visit it came to me that I should write about His last year on earth, because the gospels tell us where he went and what He did, but almost nothing of the awhy.a Accompany Him now, via these gospels, on this, His final journey, beginning with the feeding of the a5000, a and leading inexorably to His crucifixion, death and resurrection. On the way I will attempt to explain why He did what He did and why He went where He did. Think of Jesus: The Final Journey as a mystery story, not so much as a awhodunit, a but rather a awhydunit.a Shall we go?

Book excerpt: He is the Son of God; who embodied God in human form and died on the cross so we could have a way to be reunited with our Father in heaven. The month of Nisan in the Jewish calendar is the period of time when Jesus went to the cross. For the second book by author Fred Kuypers, What a Finish! What a Start! The Month Jesus Met Man's Need, the month of Nisan is explored directly in a chronological path through the four treasured gospels. Fred charts this journey nonstop with the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Highlighted also by John's gospel starting at the first day of Nisan, he characterizes an hour-by-hour presentation of what Jesus did each day during this important month in His ministry and life on earth. The hourly display shows Jesus as not just a figurehead of the Bible, but as a real person declaring relevant issues dealing with today's believers as with his disciples and desiring for people to know God the Father as He knew Him. As readers engage in What a Finish! What a Start! they will see that each gospel offers different details of Jesus' life that collectively come together to create the true image of Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Whether the text reflects Jesus as a servant in His performing of miracles (Mark) or as King of kings with His references to the kingdom of heaven (Matthew), Fred seeks to convey the four gospels together presenting all aspects of Jesus and what He demonstrated to others during this most important time of His life. Jesus was born a man on earth but He was also the incarnation of God's Word that was manifested in the flesh and portentously showed His last month of life on earth. His last month that forever defined Christ's ministry and love for us.
