Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature The Beginnings of English Literature. The Difficulties attend ing them. The Advisability of taking Chaucer as our Starting Point. The Necessity of Knowing the Outlines of Earlier Days before even Chaucer is attempted. English literature may be said to begin with some fragments of poetry that date back as far as the fourth century; and, for the ten centuries following, our literature is extremely difficult to understand, because it is written either in Anglo Saxon, or else in one of the dialects of Middle English. It took a thousand years for English literature to develop properly; and we do not come across any author who can be easily mastered until we arrive at the middle of the fourteenth century. Then we find Geoffrey Chaucer one of the greatest of our poets, who died in the year 1400. We cannot, however, properly appreciate even his work unless we know something of the condition of English between the fourth and the fourteenth centuries; and this knowledge we must try to obtain by learning a little about the principal things that happened to the language before Chaucer's time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature The writer of this volume has tried to furnish students and general readers with a clear and concise account of English literature and its makers from the beginnings to the present day. The influences of social and other movements on literary develop ment have been brought out in the brief introductions to the chapters. The biographies set forth the important facts of the authors' careers without extensive comment. This is in accord with the present writer's conviction that much ready-made inter pretation of conditions and motives, after the setting of an author's work and his characteristics have been made clear, is a hindrance rather than a help to students. Since literature is in a peculiar sense an expression of personality, an attempt has been made to sum up the personal traits of each prominent author in a para. Graph or two. Wherever an author's contribution has proved epoch-making in literary history, that fact is given special promi nence in a final summary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature This study of the great writers is concise enough to give readers ample time to fall in love with the treasures of English literature. It is better to read and enjoy one play or one poem than to read many books about the play or the poem. A taste for good books exalts the meaning of everyday events, and it gives courage in life's battle. Certainly literature is most practical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature, Vol. 2 HE play, unlike the novel, is the most rigid Of literary forms, with the exception perhaps of the sonnet. In a novel the author has an almost free hand. He can tell his story quite objectively, he can make himself the hero, he can translate his characters most secret thoughts. He can make his novel a hundred, or five hundred, pages in length, and his story can last twenty-four years or as many hours. But the dramatist has no such easy task. He has to present a story within certain dimensions he cannot avail himself of the almost unlimited fields of the novel and of the film. Practical considerations play an important part. In the first place, because it is presenting rather than relating a fact, a play must be confined to a certain length, for the reason that no audience can Sit still for more than a few hours. In the second place, the characters have to speak for themselves, their motives and thoughts have to be made clear by their actions. And now, since the school Of naturalism has won the day, they are not even allowed the Simple, though sometimes ridiculous device, of the soliloquy, by which, in talking to himself, a character tells the audience facts necessary for the development Of the plot. Even the place of action is limited by the inability of the stage-hands to change more than a certain number of scenes in a given time, and by the more crude considerations of cost. It is hoped that these reference lists will be especially helpful to those who wish to make a fuller study of the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary English Literature The general bibliographies are arranged according to literary type, with subdivisions indicatedlin so far as they prove helpful. The reference works on poetry, for example, are subdivided into anthologies, biographical and critical studies, and discussions of poetic theory and principle. In the bibliographies of individual authors, the order of ar rangement is generally from comprehensi've treatment to the treatment of particular facets of the author's life and works. The chronologies of authors' works and the lists of biblio graphical items are often selective rather than exhaustive; and in the reference works, reviews and newspaper notices are not included. Only places of publication other than New York and London are listed in the bibliographies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has therefore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge possessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. The main criterion which has regulated the selection of names is public fame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Summary of English Literature Anything in the nature of a cram-book on English literature lays its compiler open to the charge of literary vandalism and calls for a word at least of apology. It would not be impossible to defend the cram-book, in this case as in others, if it were necessary but the idea at the back of this summary is not wholly that of conveying information in a succinct tabloid form, In regard to important individual authors it draws attention to the salient facts of their outer life, to the leading characteristics of their work and to their place in literature. N o pretence to biographical or biblio graphical completeness is made but it is hoped that no important work has been overlooked and no date of any significance omitted. Similarly no desire of original criticism has been entertained, and the compiler's personal preferences and predilections have been as far as possible held in abeyance. Hence it is hoped that the book may be a safe and reliable guide to the student, helping him in the choice of what to read and drawing his attention to those opinions and criticisms which have become, by the wear and tear of the past, standard and unassailable.
