Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Four Weeks of the War But for the cultivation of a fancy, this volume would not go to the public. The collection of material for this work began shortly after the close of the War, by seeking from both North and South, files of daily and weekly papers published during the activity of the two great armies of the Union and Confederate forces. Many difficulties were encountered in collecting files now in my possession, yet, after the lapse of more than a quarter of a century, the result of my collection is in valuable and cannot be duplicated. Having a desire, after having served in the field at a youthful age, to know more than I chanced to have seen, caused me to seek this channel for that I deemed more accurate and interesting than could come from the pen of a historian, and to you is given the situation and expression on both Union and Confederate sides, to study over as I have done with great pleasure. I do not offer an apology for any article within this cover. I have given each as it came directly from the press sentiment on those dates. It has been found necessary at times to have concentrated letters and editorials, but the gist of each is retained and here given. All per sons in the South who assist in gathering the true testimony of their unfortunate struggle, perform a last, but most important office of faithful love, and do a noble work in rescuing the name of a lost cause from the slanders of those who, having been our accusers and executioners in this present time, would also be our judges at the Bar of History. Book excerpt: The classic account of the final offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich. The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater, the last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, which devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come. The Last Battle is Cornelius Ryan’s compelling account of this final battle, a story of brutal extremes, of stunning military triumph alongside the stark conditions that the civilians of Berlin experienced in the face of the Allied assault. As always, Ryan delves beneath the military and political forces that were dictating events to explore the more immediate imperatives of survival, where, as the author describes it, “to eat had become more important than to love, to burrow more dignified than to fight, to exist more militarily correct than to win.” The Last Battle is the story of ordinary people, both soldiers and civilians, caught up in the despair, frustration, and terror of defeat. It is history at its best, a masterful illumination of the effects of war on the lives of individuals, and one of the enduring works on World War II.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Four Days on a Troopship Then she screamed, and the pity of it is, I probably shall never know what she wanted, for we were leaving Genoa very, very slowly, as two tugs pulled us away from the docks. For three weeks I have waited for this boat to sail. Now. We have actually put out to sea. There were many with red eyes, swollen from tears, among the passengers; though why anybody in the world should ever weep when they are bound for New York is beyond me. About the first thing you do when you get on the boat is to size up the cabin in which you must sojourn for days to come. My impression is that I am getting less for more money than upon any other journey I have ever made, but I shall be alone. That is some compensation. It was common gossip just before we came on board that today the Germans will or will not sign Peace. The general impres sion is that they will refuse. I have just made a wager with a Swiss that they will sign. If I win I'll have my incidental ex penses paid for a long, hot trip. This Swiss tells me that there are thou sands of Germans in his country and none of them ever admit that their army was defeated. Everywhere I have gone, I have heard that same thing. Most everyone with whom you come in contact seems to think the war was ended just about a month too soon. Personally, I take no stock in such ex pressions. If there are any readers of this book who think that the German army was not decisively defeated in battle, beaten to a dead standstill and then flung irrevocably back, they are welcome to their delusions. The same with the Germans, too. In a gen cration or so the truth will begin to dawn upon them, if not sooner. In noth ing are we so much the creatures Of our surround ings as in war. For the first few weeks when I was at home, a nation going its way in an era Of pros perity had an aspect of vulgarity; peace itself was vulgar by contrast with the atmosphere Of heroic sacrifice in which I had lived for over a year. I asked myself if my country could ever rise to the state Of exaltation Of France and England. Though first thought, judging by superficial appearances alone, might have said no, I knew that we could if there ever came a call to defend our soil - a call that could be brought home to the valleys Of the Hudson and the Mississippi as a call was brought home to the valleys of the Somme, the Meuse and the Marne. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seven Weeks War, Vol. 2 of 2: Its Antecedents and Its Incidents The Hanoverian army had marched from its capital almost totally unprepared to undertake a campaign. It stood in dire need of several days' rest in order to be organized, and to allow time for the formation Of a transport train, as well as for the clothing and arma ment of the soldiers of reserve who had been recalled to the ranks, and for the horsing of part of the artillery. On this account it was forced to halt until the 20th June at Go'ttingen, and the favourable moment for its un molested march to unite with the troops of Bavaria was allowed to slip away.
