Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Little Care The Land of Little Care Come, little comrade, let us fare across the hills beyond the city, And loiter in the open where no voice may call to us for pity; We'll wade in brooks and wander by the slanting fields and forest edges, And listen to the winds that sigh and sing through aromatic sedges. We'll linger in the hawtree's shade, and carve the letters of our names On mossy fences that were made by hands which toil no longer claims; The golden willow's branch shall be a whistle you may blithely blow And every pool shall be a sea where stately vessels come and go. I'll lead you where the valleys lie deep in the morning's gleaming dew; The Crabtree's fragrant blossoms I will pluck from thorny boughs for you, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Folks of Animal Land My work in the posing of animals has been so highly successful as to give rise to a doubt in some minds that the pictures are genuine. For this reason, I take occasion to give my personal assurance that all pictures appearing in this book are photographed from life. I sincerely hope that others will derive as much pleasure from the antics of these Little Folks of Animal Land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distinctions and Anomalies, Arising Out of the Equitable Doctrine of the Legal Estate The endeavour at the same time made to deal with the matter upon principle, and more especially to find an intel ligible basis for the doctrines of the priority of the legal estate and tacking, may also be of some practical utility. The ascertainment of principles is of importance as well to the study of the law, as to its successful amendment1 and judicial development. If the explanation of tacking here advanced be the true one, it will appear that there has been in recent times a tendency of the courts to extend in more than one direction that justly reprobated doctrine, which, however, ao cording to the accepted judicial axiom is to be applied only within the bare limits of the old authorities which established it. But if the theories put forward should prove upon further investigation not to be sustainable, they may perhaps claim the merit appertaining to hypotheses in general, that they are necessary steps to something more certain. Perhaps too the statement as a whole of equitable doctrine concerning the legal estate as it now stands - its intricacy, its fortuitous results, its occasional injustice, its technicality and immaturities - may help to make more clear the urgency of the case for the legislative reform of English property law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land Claimers E 've emerged from the old Ellsworth Trail upon the windy uplands of the Coast for the last time. The forest has closed over the life that we used to know along the Siletz, and our friends have all packed out. But from the Atlantic to the Pacific the Land Claimers scattered for ever - remember the days when the pack trains made the trail from the Agency to Otter Rock, when the settler's ax echoed down the canyons. Now the forest ranger, from the high ridges, looks down on deserted cabins and shrinking clearings, and knows each place by its old name, but does not know, nor care, where the settler has gone. So I have brought some of us back, once more, in this book, to live over again for a little the life we knew along the Siletz River. At first they made their homes near the Shores of the ocean. This was partly through fear Of the red men who were not pleased at the thought of these new neighbors, SO different from themselves. AS years went by, however, the newcomers moved farther and farther into the west, driving the Indians and the wild beasts be fore them, until now the homes Of the white men are found throughout the land. People Of unlike faiths and Speaking different languages cross the ocean in Shiploads, for they feel that when America is reached they will find freedom and happiness. The Indians who are still left in the country are Slowly learning the ways Of the white men. They are taught in schools by white teachers. They live in houses instead Of the wigwams which were their former homes. They dress in white men's clothes. They even plant gardens and care for their farms in the way of civilized people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Folks in Busy-Land Little Clara filled the eight little trunks with her little dresses, little coats, little hats, little gloves, and little shoes. She did not forget her little brush and comb and her little tooth-brush, for she was a neat little girl. Then with black paint her father marked on each trunk: Clara Clay, busy-land. By that time the little horses and carriage were quite ready for her to start. As soon as Clara was seated the little peanut horses trotted Off. They ran for ten miles in a straight line, and for five miles more in a crooked one, and after that they galloped as fast as they could for twenty minutes, and after that they walked slowly for half an hour. Then the peanut horses turned a corner, and before them lay a beautiful paper road. It was as white as snow and just as smooth as marble. Clara knew this must be the road to paper-land. When Sam scalped her new doll, and fastened the glossy black curls to a Wigwam improvised with the curtains of the four-post bed in the best bedroom, Dot was sorely tried. As her eyes passed from the crownless doll on the floor to the floss-silk ringlets hanging from the bed furniture, her round rosy face grew rounder and rosier, and tears burst from her eyes. But in a moment more she clenched her little fists, forced back the tears, and gave vent to her favorite saying, I don't care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Folks Land: The Story of a Little Boy in a Big World Each morning the teacher was met with such questions as: Will you tell us more about joe-boy to-day? Did he ever grow large enough to go to kindergarten How many people helped to get his clothes? His food Did joe-boy have any pets? And so each day there was some new question arising, showing that the children felt an incompleteness to leave the story just where we had planned - and justly so, since no life is complete that does not reflect its threefold relationship to Nature, God, and man. Book excerpt: The architecture of the Belgian Modernist Juliaan Lampens (°1926) goes beyond designs for conventional living and instead suggests a utopian avant-garde of living without barriers. He experimented with the use of raw concrete and created sculpture-like exteriors leading onto open vistas. Edited by Angelique Campens - With contributions by Angelique Campens, Sara Noel Costa De Araujo, Joseph Grima, Jan Kempenaers, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Francis Strauven.
