We, of course, did not know enough to take it even at that price. Ten years later it was offered to us for five million dollars, but during that ten years we had not acquired that amount of sense, and so did not take it. During all these years it was for sale or gift to any country in the world but England; but not till 1867 was any country in the world found with sense enough - any of them had money enough - to buy it. What little of sense on that subject we had acquired by that time seemed to be in the possession of two men one of them was William H. Seward, of New York, then Secretary of State; the other was Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, then in the United States Senate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Klondike: The New Gold Fields of Alaska and the Far North-West For most of them were rich, and had grown rich quickly. In every man's pocket there was a bag of virgin gold. In all this queer make-shift baggage there was more of it. It had been gathered in a wilderness where none but savages, and few of them, had ever lived, and where there will never be a farm, a factory, a college. How much wealth they carried ashore that day will never be precisely known, and already they are scattered and have been individually forgotten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Alaska for Gold: Or the Fortune Hunters of the Yukon The rush to the far-away territory of Alaska, when gold in large quantities was discovered upon Klondike Creek, was somewhat similar to the rush to California in years gone by. The gold fever spread to even the remotest of our hamlets, and men, young and old, poured forth, ready to endure every hardship if only the much-coveted prize might be secured. That many succeeded and that many more failed is now a matter of history, although of recent date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nome Nuggets: Some of the Experiences of a Party of Gold Seekers in Northwestern Alaska in 1900 This caused a great deal of excitement among the employes of the stores at St. Michael. In five days many had secured dog teams and provisions, and were on their way over the ice to the new land of gold. In three weeks the place was nearly deserted, the same being the case with other small camps nearby. The news spread to the villages along the Yukon. Soon scores of dog teams, laden with provisions, passed through St. Michael, en route for this icy Eldorado. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Gold-Fields of Alaska to Bering Straits Had my original scheme succeeded, this work would have borne the alluring title of New York to Paris by Land a journey which, so far as I know, has never yet been accomplished, though I do not, for one moment, suggest that it never will be. My cloud, however, has its silver lining, seeing that the first part of our voyage lay through a region then known by name to perhaps a dozen white men, but now a byword throughout the civilised world: Klon dike. I may add that Harding and I were the first Europeans to reside for any length of time alone and unprotected among the Tchuktchis of Siberia. But for these facts this book might well have been entitled The Record of a Failure.' harry DE windt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
