Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, indigenous youth from Northeast India have migrated in large numbers to the main cities of metropolitan India to find work and study. This migration is facilitated by new work opportunities in the hospitality sector, mainly as service personnel in luxury hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and airlines. Prolonged armed conflicts, militarization, a stagnant economy, corrupt and ineffective governance structures, and the harsh conditions of subsistence agriculture in their home villages or small towns impel the youth to seek future prospects outside their home region. English language skills, a general cosmopolitan outlook as well as a non-Indian physical appearance have proven to be key assets in securing work within the new hospitality industry. Leaving the Land traces the migratory journeys of these youths and engage with their new lives in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land and Labour of India: A Review Four years ago I ventured to publish a small work treating of the history and mode of conducting certain agricultural enterprizes in India, in which the people of England are interested. Not expecting that the subject, notwithstanding its importance, would prove very attractive to the English public, the edition was small, and the book was soon out of print. It was reviewed, however, very generally, and its reviewers, as a rule, were far more kind and considerate in their estimates of any little merit the work may have possessed, and far more lenient to its many defects, than I had anticipated they would be, or indeed than I had any right to expect. Some portions of the subject I ventured to discuss were very difficult, particularly those involving considerations of the land tenure in India, and the duties and obligations of Government in regard to the development of the wealth of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the question of how so much growth and technical change has occurred in Indian agriculture while the position of agricultural workers has remained relatively unchanged. Focusing on the employees, this study describes an area in Southern India which is known for agricultural development. The author discusses the increase in numbers and proportion of agricultural workers, the stagnation and marginal decline of wage rates and earnings, the property-less status of agricultural workers, consumption, and indebtedness. An original contribution to the study of markets and development studies, this work shows how limited the changes in agriculture are in India.
