Book Synopsis The end of the lake-dwellings in the Circum-Alpine region by : Francesco Menotti
Download or read book The end of the lake-dwellings in the Circum-Alpine region written by Francesco Menotti and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than 3500 years of occupation in the Neolithic and Bronze Age, the many lake-dwellings around the Circum-Alpine region ‘suddenly’ came to an end. Throughout that period alternating phases of occupation and abandonment illustrate how resilient lacustrine populations were against change: cultural/environmental factors might have forced them to relocate temporarily, but they always returned to the lakes. So why were the lake-dwellings finally abandoned and what exactly happened towards the end of the Late Bronze Age that made the lake-dwellers change their way of life so drastically? The new research presented here draws upon the results of a four-year-long project dedicated to shedding light on this intriguing conundrum. Placing a particular emphasis upon the Bronze Age, a multidisciplinary team of researchers has studied the lake-dwelling phenomenon inside out, leaving no stones unturned, enabling identification of all possible interactive socioeconomic and environmental factors that can be subsequently tested against each other to prove (or disprove) their validity. By refitting the various pieces of the jigsaw a plausible, but also rather unexpected, picture emerges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lake-Dwellings of Europe: Being the Rhind Lectures in Archaeology for 1888 In these circumstances I resolved to proceed de now, and to construct my story of the lake-dwellings from whatever trustworthy sources I could lay my hands on. In order to carry out this intention my wife and I per ambulated the whole of Central Europe with note and sketch books in hand, visiting, as far as practicable, the sites of lake-dwellings, and searching museums and libraries wherever we thought their relics or records were to be found. The eastern limit of the region thus visited may be represented by a line drawn from Konigsberg to 'l'rieste, passing through the intermediate towns of Krakow, Buda Pesth, and Agram. The materials brought together from within this area are, to a very considerable extent, absolutely new to British archaeologists. Of course, in a work which aims at put ting into the hands of general readers an epitome of the essential facts and results of lacustrine researches since these singular remains were discovered in Europe, I had to take cognisance of some investigations that have already been fully recorded and illustrated. As it was impossible to illustrate typical groups of objects from all the lacustrine stations, I have, as a rule, in selecting the illustrations for this work, avoided those that have already come within the reach of English readers through the translation of Keller's works, except when they be longed to stations that are the best or only representa tives of their kind in their respective localities - as, for example, the Rosen 111801 in the Lake of Starnberg. Acting on this principle, I have given very few illustra tions of objects from Nidau, Moosseedorf, St. Aubin, \vauwyl; nor, for the same reason, is a prominent place given to the earlier discoveries at Robenhausen, Estavayer, Concise, Cortaillod, etc. In this way I have endeavoured to combine in the work now issued as much novelty as possible, without detracting from its general and com prehensive scope. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lake Dwellings of Switzerland and Other Parts of Europe When about to visit Switzerland the summer before last, I was naturally desirous of obtaining information as to the antiquities discovered of late years in what have been rightly designated, by a well-known antiquarian friend, as the 'wonderful Pfahlbauten' (Habitations lacustres), or lake dwellings. Some very excellent notices of them had appeared in English by Mr. Wylie, Sir John Lubbock, Bart. (since then printed with additional information in his late work), and Sir Charles Lyell, Bart.; but still there seemed a want of precise and definite information respecting them. On arriving in Switzerland, I found that the inhabitants were fully aware of the rich archaeological mine, which had been first brought into notice by Dr. Ferdinand Keller, the excellent president of the Antiquarian Association of Zurich. The investigation of the various lake dwellings is now carried on with a zeal and energy, which might be emulated with advantage by our own richer and more numerous societies. Almost all the museums of Switzerland now contain valuable collections of these antiquities: there is hardly a native who is not fully alive to the value of these discoveries.
