Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life story of Dr. Ethel Margaret Phillips (1876–1951) is remarkable. She was one of the first women to graduate as a medical doctor at the University of Manchester, in England. She was also a "suffragist" who became a pioneering missionary in China at a time when missions were invariably led by men, and women missionaries were dutiful wives. She remained unmarried and independent of any authority, save that of her own conscience. This occasionally led to hot disputes with those who did not share her views, such as the Anglican Bishop in China, William White. Margaret Phillips worked for the Society for Propagating the Gospel and the Canadian Church Inland Mission. Among her duties, she was responsible for building and running hospitals in Pingyin and Kaifeng. Later she moved to Peking where she practiced medicine as well as teaching in the Women’s Medical School. She was fluent in Chinese, giving lectures, and translating several medical texts into that language. Phillips endured the Japanese occupation of China during WW II. She fled China to England, as a refugee, when the Chinese Communists seized power. Her remaining years were spend in England where she died and was buried. Dr. Margaret Phillip’s life was one of faith, drama, stubborn focus, and Christian service. The biography, The Lady Named Thunder, is written by her adopted son, Cliff Phillips, from her extensive journals, letters and notes, as well as his own personal recollections. It seeks to place Margaret Phillip’s life within the greater stream of history. As it relies heavily on documentary evidence, the manuscript features the authentic voice of a unique woman, who found her cause as a medical missionary in China. Dr. Phillip’s career and life touches on various large themes including: the history of medicine, women’s history, Victorian life and childhood, foreign missions in China, foreign life in China under the Treaty System, development of Western medicine in China, and aspects of Chinese politics and international relations in the first half of the 20th century. The manuscript, although framed as a popular work, sheds complimentary light on the history of missionaries in China.

Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie's story—Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect. * "[A] vivid story.... Entirely through its own internal development, the novel shows the rich inner rewards of black pride, love, and independence."—Booklist, starred review

I love my country, Daughter, but here we have been robbed of our most precious gifts: thought and imagination. Only in an atmosphere of peace and security can artists, poets, and writers flourish. Without our artists and storytellers, we have no history, and without history our future is unmoored—we drift. It is art, never war, that carries culture forward.”

But the list of ingredients is long and not easy to find . . . and the storm is coming closer all the time! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occasionally, it happens that when men or animals have been struck by lightning, peculiar impressions have been left upon their bodies, which seem to be the exact impression of some adjacent objects, persons, paintings, etc., in the vicinity of the stroke. The imprint is so accurate, and sometimes the exact colors of the original object are also imprinted in such a way that it makes any common observer believe it to be a photographic replica. Amazing as it may seem, lightning sometimes turns out to be a good photographer! The book revisits this curious phenomenon of nature after more than a century, especially at a time when science is perplexed to explain the causes of spontaneous appearance of ghostly images occasionally found on windowpanes or the recent miraculous appearance of Virgin Marys image on the window of a hospital in Malaysia. The book contains a greater body of information about the curious photographic effects of lightning than any other work on the subject, and it will be a convenient guide to those who wish to investigate further the amazing phenomenon of nature. This is a thorough study of the subject, written in nontechnical language for the layman with a scientific inclination or just curiosity about nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows the story of Elizabeth and Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. But what about their sister Mary? At the conclusion of Jane Austen's classic novel, Mary, bookish, awkward, and by all accounts, unmarriageable, is sentenced to a dull, provincial existence in the backwaters of Britain. Now, master storyteller Colleen McCullough rescues Mary from her dreary fate with The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet, a page-turning sequel set twenty years after Austen's novel closes. The story begins as the neglected Bennet sister is released from the stultifying duty of caring for her insufferable mother. Though many would call a woman of Mary's age a spinster, she has blossomed into a beauty to rival that of her famed sisters. Her violet eyes and perfect figure bewitch the eligible men in the neighborhood, but though her family urges her to marry, romance and frippery hold no attraction. Instead, she is determined to set off on an adventure of her own. Fired with zeal by the newspaper letters of the mysterious Argus, she resolves to publish a book about the plight of England's poor. Plunging from one predicament into another, Mary finds herself stumbling closer to long-buried secrets, unanticipated dangers, and unlooked-for romance. Meanwhile, the other dearly loved characters of Pride and Prejudice fret about the missing Mary while they contend with difficulties of their own. Darcy's political ambitions consume his ardor, and he bothers with Elizabeth only when the impropriety of her family seems to threaten his career. Lydia, wild and charming as ever, drinks and philanders her way into dire straits; Kitty, a young widow of means, occupies herself with gossip and shopping; and Jane, naïve and trusting as ever, spends her days ministering to her crop of boys and her adoring, if not entirely faithful, husband. Yet, with the shadowy and mysterious figure of DarcyÕs right-hand man, Ned Skinner, lurking at every corner, it is clear that all is not what it seems at idyllic Pemberley. As the many threads of McCulloughÕs masterful plot come together, shocking truths are revealed, love, both old and new, is tested, and all learn the value of true independence in a novel for every woman who has wanted to leave her mark on the world.
