This concise history recounts the story of Canadian labour from the nineteenth century to the present day. First published in 1989, it has been updated to include new developments in the world of labour up to 1995. Heron depicts the major events and trends in labour's history, and assesses the current state and direction of the labour movement. The Canadian Labour Movement is a masterful overview of the subject, providing a broad and accessible introduction to Canadian labour.

During the war, Newfoundland's economy soared, but the hotel employees were poorly paid. He organized a union in 1942, became its President, and skilfully negotiated a wage increase and other benefits for the hotel workers. After serving on the executives of his local union, of the St. John's Trades and Labour Council, and of the Newfoundland Federation of Labour, he became the Newfoundland organizer for the American Federation of Labour (AFL-CIO) in 1948. As Federation organizer, he travelled the province from coast to coast, helping Newfoundland workers form unions. Travel in Newfoundland in the 1945-65 period was no small part of the job, and justified a separate chapter (10) in this book. With the creation of the Canadian Labour Congress in 1956, Strong became a CLC representative. Although not involved directly with the IWA, Cyril saw the dramatic events of the 1959-60 IWA organizing drive and loggers strike from the inside, a story which he recounts here. This led to him to take a brief stint at provincial politics in 1959, running for the newly-formed Newfoundland Democratic Party (NDP), a name which persuaded Tommy Douglas to adopt in 1961 in place of the federal CCF. Cyril Strong gained the respect of supporters and opponents alike during his career, and should rank among the great Newfoundlanders.

Book excerpt: In The Canadian Labour Movement, historian Craig Heron and political scientist Charles Smith tell the story of Canada's workers from the midnineteenth century through to today, painting a vivid picture of key developments, such as the birth of craft unionism, the breakthroughs of the fifties and sixties, and the setbacks of the early twenty-first century. The fourth edition of this book has been completely updated with a substantial new chapter that covers the period from the great recession of 2008 through to 2020. In this chapter, Smith describes the fallout of the financial crisis, how Stephen Harper's government restricted labour rights, the rise of the "gig economy" and precarious work, and the continued de-industrialization in the private sector. These pressures contributed to fracturing the movement, as when Unifor, the largest private sector union, split from the Canadian Labour Congress, the established "house of labour." Through it all, rank-and-file union members have fought for better conditions for all workers, including through campaigns like the fight for a $15 minimum wage. The Canadian Labour Movement is the definitive book for anyone interested in understanding the origins, achievements, and challenges of the labour and social justice movements in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years after Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada were ones of rapid social and economic change, as provincial resettlement and industrialization initiatives attempted to transform the lives of rural Newfoundlanders. At Memorial University in St. John’s, a new generation of faculty saw the province’s transformation as a critical moment. Some hoped to solve the challenges of modernization through their rural research. Others hoped to document the island’s “traditional” culture before it disappeared. Between them they created the field of “Newfoundland studies.” In Observing the Outports, Jeff A. Webb illustrates how interdisciplinary collaborations among scholars of lexicography, history, folklore, anthropology, sociology, and geography laid the foundation of our understanding of Newfoundland society in an era of modernization. His extensive archival research and oral history interviews illuminate how scholars at Memorial University created an intellectual movement that paralleled the province’s cultural revival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1930s a rich deposit of fluorspar, a mineral used in the production of aluminum, steel, non-stick coatings, and fire retardant clothing, was discovered on the southern tip of Newfoundland. Two mines were established and by mid-century were major employers in St Lawrence. In the 1950s physician Cyril Walsh noticed a marked increase in cases of cancer in the miners. By the late 1960s nearly twenty percent of St Lawrence households had lost a family member to lung cancer. John Martin tells the history of Newfoundland's fluorspar mines from their founding to the last shipment of fluorspar in 1990 and declaration of bankruptcy a year later. He focuses on the health hazards experienced by the miners, and how the mining companies, workers, governments, and health services came to terms with the unfolding human tragedy. He also covers such matters as the improvement of methods for dust quantification and radiation surveillance in the mines, battles for compensation, and the influence of the St Lawrence case on the development of labour law in the province. Martin's compelling history takes on new significance as the mines are set to reopen with the support of the provincial government and renewed confidence in the community due to modern ventilation technology and vigilant monitoring.
