Book Synopsis Immigrants and the Labour Force by : Ravi Pendakur
Download or read book Immigrants and the Labour Force written by Ravi Pendakur and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-07-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First, Canada's primary source for immigrants has shifted dramatically from the United Kingdom and Europe to countries outside Europe. Second there has been a remarkable transformation in the nature of work: Canada's economy has changed from relying on resource extraction to an emphasis on manufacturing, and presently is emerging as post-industrial and knowledge-based. Pendakur combines an analysis of parliamentary debates on immigration issues with an evaluation of the regulatory and policy changes that resulted from these discussions and an analysis of how the work of immigrants changed over a five-decade. He then provides both a political and quantitative analysis by looking at issues that affect not only immigrants but minorities born in Canada in order to assess the degree to which labour market discrimination exists and whether employment equity programs are needed.

This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to present a detailed analysis of economic integration of immigrants in smaller areas of their host nations. It uses Atlantic Canada as a case in point and uses unpublished data based on several databases of Statistics Canada and Citizenship and Immigration, Canada. It identifies best policy practices that can also be used in other countries to address demographic challenges similar to those facing Canada, for example population ageing and youth out-migration from smaller regions to larger regions, through immigration. Economic integration of immigrants in Atlantic Canada is faster and better than it is nationally. An overarching result is that an analysis of regional data can lead to very different policy conclusions than the analysis of national data, which means that it can be risky to devise immigration policy based only on national data. A clear message is that economic benefits from immigration can be enhanced by facilitating a broader geographic distribution of immigrants, rather than maintaining their concentration in a few larger urban regions. A must read for immigration and population policy makers, immigrant settlement agencies and academic researchers.

Book excerpt: Since 9/11 there have been many changes to the external environment of Canadian immigration, a number of criticisms of current immigration policy in Canada, and several proposals for dealing with current labour market needs and settlement patterns of immigrants to Canada. In Canadian Immigration Policy for the 21st Century the authors examine the issues raised by these concerns. the role of immigration in meeting Canada's demographic and labour market needs, decentralization of immigration policy with special focus on the Quebec perspective and the recent Manitoba experience, policy responses to increasing international labour mobility, immigration data resources in Canada, the changing immigrant experience in the labour market including issues of skill recognition and the effects of business cycles on labour market integration, and social inclusion of immigrants, including the health of immigrant children and visible minority enclaves in major Canadian cities.

Book excerpt: When migrants reach their new home, we often interpret their settlement and integration as an individual process driven largely by the labour market. But family plays a crucial role. Putting Family First is the fruit of a four-year academic–community partnership to investigate the experience of immigrant families settling in Greater Toronto. Contributors explore the integration trajectory of immigrant families, from newcomers’ initial reception to their deep involvement in and attachment to their receiving society. Chapters examine the interrelated themes of the policy environment, children and youth, gender, labour markets and work, and community supports, making insightful connections between concepts such as neoliberalism, resilience, and social capital. Putting Family First applies rigorous academic research to solve practical problems, illustrating how the family context can be mobilized to facilitate the successful integration of newcomers and offering important guidance to practitioners and policy makers in Canada and beyond.

Book excerpt: "There are more than 200,000 Caribbean-born Canadians. The majority live in Toronto and Montreal. Some have been in Canada for a fairly long time, but the largest number arrived after 1962. They are better educated, on average, than are Canadian-born residents. A sizeable proportion are bilingual. However, very few are entrepreneurs, and few hold management positions. Their average income is lower than that of other immigrants as a whole. A substantial number of their families fall into the low-income category." -- Cover.
