Book excerpt: Kitabu: The Drum Still Cries is not only the story of a young missionary living in a remote area with an indigenous group of people, but also a story of the struggle and the victory, as the missionary learns to share the Gospel in culturally appropriate ways, so that the men of the African tribe can pass on the truths of the Gospel, and transform their own lives. This unique story is told by an imaginary troubadour, who observes the youthful missionary, who seeks to find redemptive analogies and culturally appropriate ways to present the Gospel to a civilization far removed from his own educational background. The African men must take up the challenge of reaching their own people for Christ. Kitabu: The Drum Still Cries will make you laugh and cry, as you walk through the foothills of the mountains, with the men who face challenges of planting a truly original church among their own people, for themselves, and for God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Tibet’s notorious master of Buddhist sorcery—translated for the first time into English An essential sacred text of Tibetan Buddhism, The All-Pervading Melodious Drumbeat tells the wondrous story of Ra Lotsawa Dorjé Drak. Though he was canonized as a saint and a fully enlightened buddha, the eleventh-century Ra Lotsawa’s life story presents a darker path than those taken by Siddhartha Gautama and Milarepa. Viewed by some as a murderous villain and by others as a liberator of human suffering, Ra Lotsawa used his formidable power and magical abilities to defeat his rivals, accumulate wealth, and amass a devoted following. His life offers a rare view into the often overlooked roles of magic and sorcery in the Buddhist tradition. Despite this sinister legacy, his fame also rests on an illustrious career as a translator of Buddhist scriptures, through which he helped spark a renaissance of Buddhism in Tibet. This spirited new translation gives readers in English their first opportunity to encounter one of the most colorful and memorable figures in Tibetan Buddhist history. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Yet Charles 1 finds himself shivering on a scaffold in Whitehall, with the axe man by his side . . . In this brilliantly atmospheric novel, Simon Parke explores one of the most gripping tales in English history. Robert Hammond, the poor man who found himself the king’s gaoler . . . Charles’ remarkable mistress (written out of the records), the super-spy Jane Whorwood . . . and of course, the brilliant and depressed Oliver Cromwell, who is working through his own demons of religion, politics, love and death.

Book excerpt: Welcome to The Kings Journal. Traditional leadership and the way of life in Africa have been destroyed by postcolonial republican society through an insidious program of political governance and foreign culture, which uses foreign law, foreign language, and black magic to suppress tradition. The Kings Journal is a unique expos of African tradition written by an African king who has life experiences in both worlds of tradition on one hand and foreign law in the other. The journal is outstanding in its ability to explore the shadow side of law, tradition, and politics that has brought about a clash of cultures in Africa. The conflict of cultures highlighted is responsible for the present-day poverty and other forms of strife in postcolonial Africa. The journal offers deeper understanding of these salient dynamics of history and politics within black society in Southern Africa and traditional ceremonies, with special focus on the rituals of the royal leopard, the coronation of a king, magic and initiation schoolsall presented from the horses mouth of an African king living the experiences. Book 1 is subtitled From the Horses Mouth to denote the firsthand nature of the stories told. It consists of several stories within one long narrative extracted from an ongoing journalhence the main title The Kings Journal. The stories are, by themselves, a biography of the king, told in a conversational style in the form of letters to the reader. There is sure entertainment for everyone seeking cultural diversity and a new way of viewing life, be they game hunters, adventurers, horse lovers, lawyers, politicians, philosophers, traditionalists, occultists, shamans, religious people, and the royals of the world.

Book excerpt: This story takes place deep in the GreatForestwhere people are rarely seen. The inhabitants of this land called Bug-A-Boosmay be bothered from time to time by animals like lizards or bears but most of the time the bugs who live in this story go about thenown business of getting food, building homes or arguing or fighting with each other. Bug A- Boos is a community much like the ones people create, although on a much smaller Ralph the Drone is the main character in this story. He is an unusual bee because he is not simply a worker bee; he is a thinking bee who is concerned over threats to the well being of all of the bugs. It was that characteristic which got Ralph in trouble because he openly disagreed with a plan for handling a drought which was announced by the Monarch, the leader of all the bugs. Ralph found himself banished to the land of the fire ants for daring to suggest a better approach. This proved to be fortunate because Ralph and two friends who joined him, Milllie the Moth and Chuck the Chub, overheard the fire ant''s leader,General G, planning an attackBug-A-Boosand recommended a way to counter the attack. The plan worked and the fire ants were turned back. Ralph was still held in disdain, however. The leader of the fire ants, General G, was not the type of bug that would give up easily. He also vowed to get even with Ralph the Drone and made a pact with the evil Ann Mantis to capture Ralph. She was more than pleased to help General G because of her long standing hate of Ralph. When Ralph is captured by the fire ants, it appears the peaceful community of Boosand its incompetent leader, the Monarch, will at last fall prey to the fire ants.
