Download or read book In the Alley of the Friend written by Shahrokh Meskoob and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated and beloved fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafez continues to play an essential role in the lives of Iranians today. For centuries, scholars have studied his work, exploringboth his life and his deeply moving poetry of love, spirituality, and protest. Yet, Shahrokh Meskoob is one of the first scholars to take an innovative approach to Hafez’s poetry. Meskoob goes beyond a linguistic and rhetorical analysis of Hafez’s poetry in the Divan to access the interior thoughts of the poet and summon his spirit in the process of understanding Hafez’s mysticism.
Book Synopsis Children of the Alley by : Naguib Mahfouz
Download or read book Children of the Alley written by Naguib Mahfouz and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tumultuous alley of this rich and intricate novel (first published in Arabic in 1959) is inhabited by a delightful Egyptian family, but is also the setting for a second, hidden, and more daring narrative: the spiritual history of humankind. The men and women of a modern Cairo neighborood unwittingly reenact the lives of their holy ancestors: from the feudal lord who disowns one son for diabolical pride and puts another to the test, to the savior of a succeeding generation who frees his people from bondage. This powerful novel confirms again the richness and variety of Mahfouz's storytelling and his status as "the single most important writer in modern Arabic literature" (Newsweek).
Download or read book Alley & Rex written by Joel Ross and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Wayside School will love this first book in a new, off-the-wall middle grade series about two boys—one with the heart of a lion and the test scores of a baked potato, the other a shy boy genius in a bunny suit—finding their strengths and true friendship. Sixth-grader Alley Katz is innocently trying to help a bunch of kindergarteners when the burrito hits the fan. Literally. A burrito. A ceiling fan. A hail of beans. Now he has to get an A on his science test or he’ll be transferred to the dreaded Steggles Academy. An A seems impossible! Alley is kind, intrepid, and well-liked, but for some reason he doesn’t get graded on any of that. So the principal assigns a peer mentor to help: Rex, a fourth-grade genius who wears a bunny suit. Alley is totally in favor of both bunnies and fourth graders, but he doesn’t need Rex. He has his own foolproof plan to ace the test. Still, Rex is determined to fulfill his duty as Alley’s mentor—and he may need some help of his own. One boy needs to stay in school, the other needs to get through it. Can this odd couple save the day—and each other?
Download or read book Midaq Alley written by Naguib Mahfouz and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely acclaimed as Naguib Mahfouz's best novel, Midaq Alley brings to life one of the hustling, teeming back alleys of Cairo in the 1940s. From Zaita the cripple-maker to Kirsha the hedonistic cafe owner, from Abbas the barber who mistakes greed for love to Hamida who sells her soul to escape the alley, from waiters and widows to politicians, pimps, and poets, the inhabitants of Midaq Alley vividly evoke Egypt's largest city as it teeters on the brink of change. Never has Nobel Prize-winner Mahfouz's talent for rich and luxurious storytelling been more evident than here, in his portrait of one small street as a microcosm of the world on the threshold of modernity.
Book Synopsis The Price of Greatness by : Jay Cost
Download or read book The Price of Greatness written by Jay Cost and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive account of the tumultuous relationship between Alexander Hamilton and James Madison and of the origins of our wealthy yet highly unequal nation In the history of American politics there are few stories as enigmatic as that of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison's bitterly personal falling out. Together they helped bring the Constitution into being, yet soon after the new republic was born they broke over the meaning of its founding document. Hamilton emphasized economic growth, Madison the importance of republican principles. Jay Cost is the first to argue that both men were right--and that their quarrel reveals a fundamental paradox at the heart of the American experiment. He shows that each man in his own way came to accept corruption as a necessary cost of growth. The Price of Greatness reveals the trade-off that made the United States the richest nation in human history, and that continues to fracture our politics to this day.

Book excerpt: In a land of fantasy, magic, and even elves, being a princess would be considered something of a dream; but to the fourteen-year-old Varus, it is more of a burden than anything. It’s not really the responsibilities that weigh so much on Varus, it’s that she—along with her brother and sister— live in the conquered land of their enemies; they attend high school surrounded by people that hate them and their father. Beyond that, Varus isn’t a normal person; she has green skin, silver hair, black lips, and a host of other unique colors across her body. It’s not all bad though, her younger sister Xarox is a genius, and her older brother Drait is a guardian to the both of them. Along with Bob and Marge— their caretakers— they don’t have much to fear of the townspeople. When the war of their father suddenly begins to rage again, Varus finds her life flipped upside down. How far will she go to end the war her father started? Will she become a hero? Can the King’s Daughter unite Anterra? Or will she become the monster she fears she is? Only through the fires of war can she learn for sure.

Book Synopsis History of the King's Regiment (Liverpool) 1914-1919 Volume II by : Everard Wyrall
Download or read book History of the King's Regiment (Liverpool) 1914-1919 Volume II written by Everard Wyrall and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II of III This is an impressive history by the most prolific author of Great War divisional and regimental histories, a fine tribute to a regiment that contributed 49 battalions to the nation's war effort, 26 of them served overseas, including the 2nd Battalion which was in India in August 1914 and remained there throughout the war. It is also a tribute to the author who died in 1933, before he could finish the third volume; the final few chapters were completed by Capt W. Synge of the 1st Battalion. All 23 front line battalions served on the Western Front, one of them (14th) in Salonika as well. The Roll of Honour lists 14,200 dead, six VCs were won, one of them by an officer (Capt O.A.Reid) attached to another regiment, and 58 Battle Honours were awarded. This work is set out in chronological order, each volume dealing with a specific period and ending with the Roll of Honour for that period and citations for any VC. Dates are in the margin and so is the identification of the battalion involved in the action being described. Volume 2 takes the narrative through 1916 to 30 June 1917 and the Arras offensive. As it may be imagined, there is plenty of detail in a history so generous with space as this, with its three volumes, and the narrative is supported with clear maps.
