Book excerpt: Positive program interventions are an essential need for students who display problem behaviors in school and in efforts to support student success, Positive Behavior Intervention Supports ("PBIS") have been used to support students who display these types of behaviors since its introduction in 1997 (Sugai & Simonsen, 2012). Creating effective classroom environments is an example of a PBIS strategy while benefits associated with PBIS include improved school climate, improved academic achievement and reductions in referrals to the office for discipline (ODR's) (Flannery et al., 2014). While numerous studies have been conducted since 1997 to describe, inform and assess outcomes associated with PBIS, the research to date has not adequately identified the specific ingredients needed to support the implementation of PBIS in schools; as such, there is an urgent need to identify these key components (Sugai & Simonsen, 2012). This graduate project conducted a systematic literature review of fifteen journal articles that met the inclusion criteria to explore what barriers are keeping schools from accessing and activate the key environmental, organizational and/or program ingredients that contribute to the success of PBIS in schools. The findings from this review indicate that the key ingredients for success are professional development, staff buy in and leadership support whereas time and money are the key barriers that get in the way of schools accomplishing their goals (or implementing PBIS to the fullest? The implications for stakeholders include ensuring time and money is available when implementing PBIS.

Book excerpt: The mission of school is to maximize opportunities for students to achieve three primary and inter-related competence areas that enable participation, contributions, and success in schools and larger communities: academic, life skills, and social skills. Achieving these competence expectations is affected by many competing social and behavioral factors. The single most common request for assistance from teachers is related to behavior and classroom management. The problem-solving approach to behavior difficulties, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), is a process for teaching social and behavioral skills so that a school can focus its efforts on teaching and learning. School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) is an organizational framework focused on increasing proactive, preventative approaches for responding to problem behavior in schools. The purpose of this research is to describe the ongoing strategies employed by an elementary school successfully implementing SWPBS with integrity. Implementation of SWPBS will be conceptualized by the seven core components necessary to drive effective implementation suggested by Fixsen, Blase, Naoom, and Wallace (2009). The results of the study will provide critical data for learning more appropriate ways to positively impact implementation efforts in a variety of school environments.

Book excerpt: Within today's classroom, teachers not only teach academics but also social and behavioral skills. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) has been used as a school-wide intervention in order to provide students a framework for behavioral expectations (Baker & Ryan, 2014). Certain factors within the school site can enable the implementation of PBIS. This research study investigates the elements that enable the implementation of PBIS and the role of the education leader in its implementation and sustainability. The focus of research is at the high school level and involves the administrators, PBIS team, and students' behavioral data. The research uses the mixed methods approach in order to gather and analyze interviews, behavioral data, and inventories. From the research, it can be concluded that staff buy-in, administrative support, and training are primary enablers for the implementation of PBIS.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: School systems have become increasingly more focused on student behaviors, mental health, and school climate in an effort to help the whole child. Problem behaviors interrupt and waste instructional time. Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) has proven to be a successful framework that focuses on improving the school culture and the needs of the whole child. PBIS implementation is essential with buy-in and satisfaction from all stake holders within a district, but most importantly, the teachers, The purpose of this study was to explore the perceived impact that a PBIS motivation and implementation intervention would have on teacher beliefs and behaviors regarding the implementation of PBIS. Furthermore, this study sought to identify (a) teachers' perceptions regarding various aspects of PBIS and if it changed over time and in connection with a PBIS motivation and implementation intervention and (b) if relationships existed between variables. Results of this study conclude that teacher buy-in and satisfaction with PBIS is integral to the successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

Book excerpt: Student behavior is an important topic that educators must contend with in the current educational climate. Due to changing laws and movement away from zero tolerance policies, schools have had to adapt to manage student misbehavior differently. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a common framework that has been adopted to help create positive behavior change on school campuses when implemented with fidelity; however, teacher perception is important for implementation fidelity of PBIS. There were two purposes to this study. The first purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to examine the difference between teacher perception of PBIS and teacher perception of classroom control with implementation fidelity of PBIS at schools scoring low, moderate, and high for fidelity of implementation in order to better inform stakeholders about effective ways to ensure reduced discipline, thus increased school safety, and a positive school culture, on a middle school campus. The second purpose of the study was correlational and examined whether there was a relationship between teacher perception of PBIS and teacher perception of classroom control. The study used a causal-comparative research design as well as a correlational research design to address the two research questions. Middle school teachers at schools scored low, moderate, and high for implementation fidelity of PBIS were surveyed at the end of the 2021 school year. There were no significant differences in teacher perception of PBIS and teacher perception of classroom control at schools scoring low, moderate, and high for implementation fidelity, but there was a significant relationship between teacher perception of PBIS and teacher perception of classroom control.

Book excerpt: Abstract This dissertation examines the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) at the secondary school level. The study used a mixed-method research approach. Concurrently, a qualitative survey about PBIS implementation with a quantitative open-ended question identifying how to improve implementation was administered to all secondary staff at one middle school. While the results affirmed that the four systems of PBIS were in place, this dissertation provides recommendations for implementation and how to improve implementation in a Midwestern middle school. Book excerpt: Restraint and Seclusion (R&S) within the school setting is a practice that cancause immense physical and emotional harm for students if done incorrectly. Manydistricts implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which help stop problem behaviors before they happen, and can minimize the need for R&S. This quantitative study examined if Ohio districts utilizing PBIS showed a significant difference in the frequencies of R&S reported over the course of a school year. Participants included all of the 23 school districts in Ohio's Montgomery and Greene counties. Data collected included 1) the frequencies of R&S the district reported for the2016-2017 school year, 2) if the district was implementing a PBIS program adhering toOhio's Revised Code, and 3) what specific components of PBIS each district was implementing. Analysis of this data revealed that school districts within Montgomery and Greene counties who were not implementing PBIS reported significantly fewer frequencies of R&S during the 2016-2017 school year than school districts implementing PBIS. This unexpected finding is not consistent with the current research surrounding R&S and PBIS. Implications for this finding, as well as possible rational are discussed in this thesis.
