The Kerry Blue Terrier was originally developed for the purpose of controlling 'vermin,' which includes rats, badgers, foxes, hares, rabbits and otters. Due to the fact that the Kerry Blue Terrier is capable of hunting 'vermin' both on land and in water, the breed quickly became popular as a general purpose working dog due its high levels of adaptability. The breed has been known to be a guard dog, a companion dog and a cattle herder. The breed was first used in the mountains of Kerry, in Ireland, hence the breed's name - the Kerry Blue Terrier is actually the national dog of Ireland. The Kerry Blue Terrier is known to have a long head with a flat skull, a deep chest, and a soft wavy-to-curly coat. The Kerry Blue Terrier's most unique feature is its coat. The breed has no undercoat and its coat has a texture similar to human hair or fine wool. Interestingly, the Kerry Blue Terrier does not tend to shed but will continuously grow its coat throughout the year which makes the Kerry Blue Terrier a hypoallergenic breed. The breed's coat comes in various shades of 'blue,' however all Kerry Blue Terrier puppies are born with black coats that slowly shift to a blue coloration.
