Book excerpt: The bizarre, true story of a robbery gone wrong and the explosive murder that shocked the nation—as seen on Netflix’s docuseries Evil Genius. For the first time, two of the people who followed the story from the beginning—Jerry Clark, the lead FBI Special Agent who cracked what became known as the Pizza Bomber case, and investigative reporter Ed Palattella—tell the complete story of what happened on August 28, 2003. In the suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania, a pizza delivery man named Brian Wells was accosted by several men who locked a time bomb around his neck. They then ordered him to rob a bank. After delivering the money, he would receive clues to help him disarm the bomb. It was one of the most ingenious bank robbery schemes in history, known as Collarbomb by the FBI. It did not go according to plan. Wells, picked up by police shortly after the robbery, never found the clues he needed. Investigating the crime after his grisly death, the FBI soon discovered that Wells was not, in fact, an innocent victim. He was merely the first co-conspirator to fall in a bizarre trail of death following the crime... INCLUDES PHOTOS

Book excerpt: In March of 1982 in Barnsfield, Massachusetts, attractive Patricia Kent turned thirty years old and was a successful realtor. She had taken over her fathers business after he suffered a debilitating stroke, which he was slowly recovering from. She was still grieving the loss of her husband, who had died suddenly four years earlier and after only four months of marriage. Through a girlfriend of hers who owned a small airplane, she met Jeremy Block, who worked as a small aircraft mechanic at a local airport. Jeremy was tall, handsome, and appeared to be a perfect gentleman. Before very long, he and Patricia began seriously dating and soon became engaged. Jeremys apparent kindness and feelings for her were comforting after the recent years of sadness she had experienced. Before long, Jeremy learned of Patricias excellent financial standing achieved from lucrative property sales commissions and wise stock market investments. When Patricia was sidetracked by a family tragedy, he absconded with twenty thousand dollars of her money and an almost priceless coin collection that belonged to her father. Devastated when learning of this, she hired a private detective to attempt to locate Jeremy and her fathers stolen coins and bring him to justice. Before long, facts surfaced that painted an entirely different picture of Jeremy Block. Instead of the well-mannered, caring young man he portrayed, he was actually a con man and a thief and was possibly responsible for several murders. With twists and turns, Patricia took on a mission to apprehend Jeremy with the help of the private detective.

Book excerpt: Josh Londer is happily married to his lovely wife, Brenda, and works as a certified public accountant in 1981. They have a modest but comfortable home in Morristown, Massachusetts, and spend as much time together as they can. Before long, the company that Josh works for downsizes, and he is let go with several other employees. Due to an economic downslide, he is able to find sporadic work; but before long, he and his wife begin to struggle to meet their monthly expenses. On a summer afternoon, Josh stops for gasoline and is kidnapped by three thieves who force him to participate in the robbery of a liquor store. One man is shot and killed by the store clerk, and soon afterward, the second is shot dead by the police. The third member, a girl, manages to escape, and Josh is arrested and charged. Overwhelming evidence convinces the jury that he is guilty, and he is sentenced to four years in prison even though he is completely innocent. While he is away, his wife is hired at an electrical component company where the plant manager takes an interest in her and moves her up to a very good paying position. He agrees to hire Josh upon his release as a delivery driver for the company, which is good because with his prison record, employment would be difficult to obtain. Shortly afterward, the manager plans to use her to “entertain” some of the buyers in order to sway them to purchase exclusively from his company. Realizing that she doesn’t want Josh to learn of this after all that he has been through, he sets her up and then blackmails her into doing so. The whole situation takes a serious turn for the worse, and Josh finds himself facing another prison sentence—this time for murder.

Book excerpt: Ken Wells’s highly acclaimed picaresque Catahoula Bayou novels introduced “one of the most compelling voices in fiction of the last decade” (Los Angeles Times). Now Wells is back, writing about his favorite subject–the exotic, beleaguered Louisiana wetlands–in a sharp, rollicking tale of corporate corruption and political shenanigans. The fight over one man’s tract of sacred marsh fronts a deeper story of our place in the environment and our obligations to it. Justin Pitre’s marsh island, a legacy of his trapper grandfather, is a scenic rival to anything in the Everglades, and he has promised to protect it from all harm. But he hasn’t counted on oil bigwig Tom Huff’s plans to wreck his bayou paradise by ramming a pipeline through it. When cajolery doesn’t sway Justin to sign the land over, Huff turns to darker methods. But Justin and his spirited wife, Grace, prove to be formidable adversaries–and the game is on. Into the fray comes the charismatic Cajun governor Joe T. Evangeline, who seems more interested in chasing skirts than saving Louisiana’s eroding coast. The Guv, though, is a man on the edge, upended by a midlife crisis and torn between a secret political obligation to Big Oil and the persuasive powers of Julie Galjour, a feisty environmentalist. Julie is clearly out to reform more than the Guv’s ecopolitics, but will his tragicomic Big Oil deals wreck both his career and his chances with the brash and beautiful activist? As Justin and Grace battle to stop this Big Oil assault, the plot thickens–and the Guv becomes snared in the web. Featuring a gumbo of eccentrics and lowlifes, a kidnapping, a sexy snitch, a toxic-waste-dumping scheme, a boat chase, and a fishing trip gone horribly awry, Crawfish Mountain, spiced with Ken Wells’s keen eye for locale, showcases his adventurous storytelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical research ethics consultation has emerged in the last 15 years as a service to those involved in the conduct of clinical research who face challenging issues for which more than one course of action may be justified. To respond to a growing field and need for opportunities to share knowledge and experience, the Clinical Research Ethics Consultation Collaborative, established in 2014, holds monthly webinars for its 90 members to present their most challenging cases to each other and engage in substantive discussion. Every year, the group selects the four most interesting cases with accompanying commentaries for publication in the American Journal of Bioethics. This timely book brings together these cases and commentaries under a range of common themes for the first time, creating a permanent collection in book format that encourages and supports readers to gain a better understanding of the ethical challenges that they may face, and providing them with a convenient and reflective resource to reference in their own deliberations. Key Features: • Comprehensive collection of cases and commentaries, chosen to reflect the range of issues faced by clinical researchers and oversight committees and illustrate the diversity of analysis that can arise • Supplemented by short introductions to each section • Focus on ethical rather than regulatory issues • Essential reading for graduate students in bioethics and post-doctoral bioethics fellows, and useful for all participants in training grants that are funded by either NIH or NSF Presenting challenging cases to stimulate reflection, the book provides invaluable guidance to clinicians in training and in practice and to investigators, bioethics consultants, regulators, and oversight bodies.
