Book Synopsis Virus Infections and Diabetes Mellitus by : Yechiel Becker
Download or read book Virus Infections and Diabetes Mellitus written by Yechiel Becker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the series Developments in Medical Virology deals with viruses involved in diabetes mellitus, a syndrome with a strong genetic background that causes damage to the regulation of insulin synthesis and function. Viruses were found either to cause or to stimulate diabetes mellitus in man and in animal models. The nature of the role of viruses is described by many of the scientists who participated in the original studies. To complete the picture, chapters were included that deal with the insulin gene, the secondary structure of the proinsulin and insulin receptor polypeptides, pancreatic Langerhans islets, and clinical considerations of the disease. The aim of Developments in Medical Virology is to elucidate processes involving viruses as pathogens of cells and organisms, with special attention to human diseases. A number of volumes will be devoted to viruses affecting specific organs (e.g. brain, liver, etc.), while others will elaborate on the clinical experience in the use of antiviral drugs. The series is published in parallel with Developments in Molecular Virology, designed to present an analysis of molecular mechanisms implicated in virus infection and replicative processes. In addition, the series Developments in Veterinary Virology provides information on viruses causing diseases in animals, with special emphasis on aspects of interest to veterinarians.

Book Synopsis Diabetes by : Nestlé Nutrition Services
Download or read book Diabetes written by Nestlé Nutrition Services and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 1995 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume examines the latest findings and concepts on insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Leading international investigators from diverse disciplines highlight advances in the understanding of every aspect of diabetes mellitus, including epidemiology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pathology, immunology, nutrition, genetics, and clinical management. Coverage includes studies of diabetes mellitus at all stages of human life, from the fetus and neonate, the child and adolescent, and the pregnant woman to the middle-aged and the elderly." "The book provides new insights into the etiology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), reviews advances in defining immune markers for accurate prediction of the disease, and explores methods for identifying children and adolescents genetically at risk of developing IDDM. Several contributors assess the prospect of preventing autoimmune destruction of [beta] cells by means of different diet and drug therapies. The epidemiology and pathogenesis of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) also are discussed in detail." "Diabetes is an essential resource for all clinicians treating diabetic patients or counseling persons at risk for the disease. The book also offers promising leads for researchers developing new therapies for diabetes mellitus."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book Synopsis Causes of Diabetes by : R. D. G. Leslie
Download or read book Causes of Diabetes written by R. D. G. Leslie and published by . This book was released on 1993-11-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causes of Diabetes Genetic and Environmental Factors Edited by R. D. G. Leslie St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, UK There is now firm evidence that a non-genetically determined event plays a major role in the aetiology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and that this event is due to exposure to an environmental agent. While genetic factors are more important in the pathogenesis of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), environmental factors also play a major role. Causes of Diabetes provides a comprehensive assessment of the causes of NIDDM and IDDM and pays particular attention to the environmental factors involved in disease pathogenesis. Identification of these factors opens the way for therapeutic trials aimed at preventing, even curing, this potentially devastating disease. This book is essential reading for clinicians and researchers working in diabetes, autoimmune and metabolic diseases.
Book Synopsis Immunobiology of Proteins and Peptides VII by : M. Zouhair Atassi
Download or read book Immunobiology of Proteins and Peptides VII written by M. Zouhair Atassi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume represent papers delivered by invited speakers at the 7th International Symposium on the Immunobiology of Proteins and Peptides. In addition, a few of the abstracts submitted by participants were scheduled for minisymposia and some of the authors, whose presentations were judged by the Scientific Council to be of high quality, were invited to submit papers for publication in this volume. This symposium was established in 1976 for the purpose of bringing together, once every two or three years, active investigators in the forefront of contemporary immunology, to present their findings and discuss their significance in the light of current concepts and to identify important new directions of investigation. The founding of the symposium was stimulated by the achievement of major breakthroughs in the understanding of the immune recognition of proteins and peptides. We believed that these breakthroughs will lead to the creation of a new generation of peptide reagents which should have enormous potential in biological, therapeutic, and basic applications. This anticipated explosion has in fact since occurred and many applications of these peptides are now being realized. The seventh symposium focused on immune responses that have undesirable effects on the host, hence we named them unwanted immune responses. Two major aspects of unwanted immune responses were discussed at the symposium: Allergy and Autoimmunity.
