This book is not about huge trout, although they are there, but rather about the supreme joy that is fishing. Your guide is Bruce Sandison, one of Scotland's most respected anglers. It is an account of one man's love affair with his native land, with its history and culture, its people and places. Secret Lochs and Special Places celebrates all that is best about wild fishing in Scotland.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angling and Art in Scotland: Some Fishing Experiences Related and Illustrated Although this book is entitled "Angling and Art in Scotland," it must not be thought that it is in any way a treatise upon painting. A parallel is drawn between the art of the angler and that of the landscape painter which is, to my mind, very real and ever present; but there, as far as the writing of the book goes, the matter ends; for I have devoted my space to the narration of certain angling experiences and descriptions of scenery which, I hope, may be of interest not only to the angler but to the general reader, and have left my pictures to speak for themselves as illustrative of the kindred art of landscape painting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Angling: As Practised in Scotland The very limited number, if not total want, of disserta tions upon the subject of Angling in Scotland, and the necessity for having something like an index to our lochs and streams, have induced us to throw together the fol lowing chapters. In character and produce, our waters differ very essentially from those of England; we have clear and rapid rivers - torrents black with mosses, or pel lucid as diamond - lakes large, and gleaming-tarns deep, still, and terrible, and of these, some are stored with prime, subtle trout, and others are frequented by the active salmon, the monarch of the flood. Book excerpt: “Lochs & Loch Fishing” is an 1899 guide to angling in Scotland written by Hamish Stuart. Within it, Stuart explores the nuances of fishing in a loch, which is the Scottish Gaelic, Irish, and Scots word meaning lake or sea inlet. More detailed than typical guides of its kind, “Lochs & Loch Fishing” looks at the particulars of loch fishing with reference to its inhabitants, their evolution, habits, habitats, and much more. This volume will appeal to those with a practical interest in fishing in Scotland, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of angling literature. Contents include: “The Duffer's Paradise”, “Lake-Land and Its Lessons”, “Loch Trout and Evolution: Why They Vary in Size and Quality”, “Loch Trout and Evolution: The Effects of Particular Environments”, “Fishing as the Hand-Maiden of Science”, “The Lessons of Some Lakes”, “The Salmonidae in Brackish Waters”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on the history of fishing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Angling: As Practised in Scotland The very limited number, if not total want, of dissertations upon the subject of Angling in Scotland, and the necessity for having something like an index to our lochs and streams, have induced us to throw together the following chapters. In character and produce, our waters differ very essentially from those of England; we have clear and rapid rivers - torrents black with mosses, or pellucid as diamond - lakes large, and gleaming - tarns deep, still, and terrible, and of these, some are stored with prime, subtle trout, and others are frequented by the active salmon, "the monarch of the flood." On the other hand, the English waters are generally flat and muddy, affording few fish, except those which delight in dead, calm places, such as pike, carp, roach, bream, and perch. The trout they may happen to contain are also very unlike those in Scotland, becoming large and lazy, dainty in their tastes, and capricious as to their feeding hours. Accordingly, a very different and more ingeniously varied method of capturing them, is employed by the southern angler from that practised by us. The fancy is excercised to compound tackles and artifices, which appear altogether superfluous to the eyes of Scotsmen. Insects also are constructed, which, however closely they resemble nature, are seldom if ever preferred by our countrymen to their own simple undazzling materials.
