Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, Vol. 1: November, 1866 IT is, I feel, no small honour to be called upon to preside over this section which represents the very highest branch of physical science. I say the highest branch of physical science because it has to deal with the highest and hardest of physical problems. The animal frame, which it is our work to investigate, stands at the summit of the great physical cone, with man at the apex, by whom it is, as it were, slung from heaven, in whom the material is worked up to the point of contact with, and made subservient to the purposes of the spiritual. Indeed so complex is the animal organism, so intricate and varied are the questions in physiology, that it is apt to pass out of the range of science, and become too much a matter of speculation and an object of mystery; so that there is some danger of its being degraded by the very difficulties and features which should really place it in the highest position among sciences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, Vol. 62: October Number, 1907 A study of the pulse in the jugular vein has now become established as a routine method of examining disordered hearts - an advance due to the labours of Dr James Mackenzie and of those who have adopted his method.1 With the introduction Of a new clinical method, as is also the case with a new operative procedure, certain structures and relationships assume 'an increased importance and require a fresh description. In this paper I propose to recast our description of the Structures which seem to me to be directly concerned in the production of the venous pulse - my account having reference only to the arrangement as found in the human body. I propose to deal not only with the normal but also with the disordered heart, using for this purpose the series of specimens sent to me for examination by Dr James Mackenzie. These hearts are of special value for the purpose Of study, because Dr Mackenzie had kept accurate records Of their action during many years prior to the death of the patient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, 1872, Vol. 6 Each of the septa (fig. 1) as it approacees the surface splits into two lamina which extend in opposite directions beneath the skin and meet and unite with the adjacent lamina of other septa Thus the lamina resulting from the splitting of the neural septum are spread out, right and left, upon the dorsal muscles, and meeting the ascending -lamina from the lateral septa, form sheaths enclosing the dorsal muscles. The same is the case with the lamina of the ventral septum; and the four muscles, the two dorsal' and the two ventral' of the two sides, are enclosed in sheaths, more or less distinct, formed by the lamina of the neural, ventral and lateral septa. Finally (fig. The four longitudinal caudal muscles - the two dorsal and the two ventral muscles are divided trans versely by septa, extending with more or less obliquity back wards or for wards from the intervals between the several vertebra to the enclosing sheaths just described and the skin. So that each of the longitudinal muscles is transversely seg mented into pieces corresponding with the several vertebra. These transverse septa are tough and form as it were part of the muscle itself, being connecting media between the ends of the muscular fibres of the segments. They are not disposed in true vertical planes, but form slight curves with the convexity back wards above and below the lateral septum'. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Experimental Physiology, Vol. 1 As indicator I have used, not the mechanical, but the electrical response of a muscle recording on a photographic plate, moving at a known and equable rate, the movement imparted to the meniscus of the capillary electrometer the moment an electrical change occurs at a spot connected with this instrument. The fact that the electrical response in the organ, as well as its manifestation in the recording instrument, occurs without any delay as soon as the recording spot is reached, and that it is not necessary for the whole muscle to be implicated before a record can be obtained, obviates what seems to me to be the principal objection to Wundt's experiments. The electrical response has the further advantage over the mechanical response, for the measurement of brief time intervals between different events occurring in a muscle, that the effect not only begins without delay, but, when in existence, outlasts the stimulus (which, either directly or indirectly, produces it) by a so much shorter time. A second effect, therefore, occurring in the muscle only a few thousandths of a second after a first, would have quite a distinct manifestation when recorded by such an instrument as the capillary electrometer, whereas in the record of the contraction of the muscle two such effects would be merged into one. This being so, there should be no difficulty in recording on the same photographic plate, and measuring the time interval between, the two electrical effects produced at one and the same spot of the muscle in response to simultaneous excitation of efferent and afferent nerve respectively; nor is there any such difficulty, provided that the cord is sufficiently sensitive for an effectual response to be obtained from it at all when the stimulus applied to the afferent nerve is single and instan taneous, as for the purpose in hand it must be. Taking a wider view, the lungs are the only major system in direct contact with the environment, serving to protect the body with a variety of defenses, but also taking the brunt of the onslaught, when the air we breathe is toxic. The Ins and Outs of Breathing is the result of Dr. Norman Jones's fifty-year odyssey to understand how the lung works and the science of breathing. Jones traces the struggles of scientists from Leonardo to the present day as they pieced together the structure of the lungs. He examines the effect of changes in breathing and its secondary effects on other body systems. Understand how breathing influences many bodily functions, from our muscles, brain, and even the immune system. Discover how Everest was climbed without oxygen, how Roger Bannister ran the first four-minute mile, and how SCUBA allows you to enjoy underwater exploration. Find the evidence to convince you or your friends to stop smoking. See all the different ways in which animals, marine creatures and birds breathe. Gain insights into asthma, COPD, and other lung complaints. Discover what makes your partner snore at night, and what to do about it. Accessible and wide-ranging, this layman's guide to the lungs can help you appreciate the many meanings of inspiration.

Dr. Jones said in the preface to the first edition This volume has been prepared with a view of presenting, in as convenient form as possible, the essential facts of modern physiology as related to the practice of medicine. This object has been kept in mind in the preparation of the third edition. In this edition the Introduction, the chapters on The Cell, The Elementary Tissues and on the Blood have been entirely rewritten and new illustrations added. A new chapter, with illustrations, on The Physiological Characteristics of Muscle, has been added. The chapter on Secretion has been rearranged. New subject matter has been added to the chapter on The Physiology of Digestion and Absorption. Other minor changes have been made throughout the book where such were deemed advisable. Especial acknowledgment is due to Dr. Robert G. Stephens for his valuable work in preparing the second edition. Book excerpt: Image processing and image analysis are typically important fieldsin information science and technology. By “imageprocessing”, we generally understand all kinds of operationperformed on images (or sequences of images) in order to increasetheir quality, restore their original content, emphasize someparticular aspect of the information or optimize theirtransmission, or to perform radiometric and/or spatial analysis. By“image analysis” we understand, however, all kinds ofoperation performed on images (or sequences of images) in order toextract qualitative or quantitative data, perform measurements andapply statistical analysis. Whereas there are nowadays many booksdealing with image processing, only a small number deal with imageanalysis. The methods and techniques involved in these fields ofcourse have a wide range of applications in our daily world:industrial vision, material imaging, medical imaging, biologicalimaging, multimedia applications, satellite imaging, qualitycontrol, traffic control, and so on

It is rather anattempt to state the leading principles and facts of physiology, and more especially of human physiology, in such a way as will be understood by an intelligent reader who has had no special scientific training. If the perusal of this little book leads the reader to wish to know more of this fascinating science, which, in a sense, is the meeting-point of many sciences, he is referred to the Bib liography, and the aim of the writer will be accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, Vol. 1 The Bible is in no sense a text-book of natural science, and its Divine Author seems to have never intimated that such teaching is a leading or prominent aim in the bestowment of this invaluable gift. But it is evident, in the nature of things, that when it does teach science, it teaches it with absolute truthfulness, Long ago, in allusion to animated nature, it said, The blood is the life thereof - a truth slowly received by modern physiology, and recognised only within the memory of some present. And early in the centuries it set forth, in its army regulations, the disinfecting properties and' powers of dry earth, and had its directions been rigidly followed, in our late civil war thousands of lives would have been saved, and men who are mere wrecks would have remained strong and manly. Allow me a quotation And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee. Nor is it silent on surgery, and we learn, from its description, that the first surgical operation, known to earth, was performed while the subject of it was under anaesthetic influence. And we are told, by the same high authority, that, Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, and, that All these things happened unto them for ensamples, and they are written for our admonition, and yet how slow have we been to learn, or to receive, the admonition that surgical operations should be painless, and that, when painful, they are not performed in accordance with true science. That surgical operations should be unattended with pain is all the more reasonable, when we recognize, as I think we must, that anaesthesia is, in its essential nature, a physiological, and not of necessity a pathological condition. True, many, and perhaps most patients, when anaesthetised, are in pathological states, but this may be their misfortune, and the fault of undeveloped surgical science, and in no sense a necessity of anaesthesia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques or "tapping") is used by an estimated 10 million people worldwide. Yet a lack of standardization has led to a field in which dozens of forms of EFT, with varying degrees of fidelity to the original, can be found. This led to the establishment of Clinical EFT, the form of EFT taught in the original EFT Manual and associated materials, and validated in over 20 clinical trials. In this volume, the most noted scholars, researchers and clinicians in the field compile a definitive outline of the EFT protocol, as it is applied in medicine, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and life coaching. This first volume covers • Biomedical and Physics Principles • Psychological Trauma • Fundamental Techniques of Clinical EFT. This series of handbooks is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand EFT as validated in research, science, and best clinical practice.
