Book Synopsis Reclaiming the Future by : Jane Kelsey
Download or read book Reclaiming the Future written by Jane Kelsey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vision of a global future spread through the world like wildfire in the last decade - exhilarating for some, alarming for others, apparently inexorable for all. As free-market advocates would have it, "there is no alternative?" "Reclaiming the Future" tells a different story - that globalization is not inevitable, invincible or intrinsically good. The deregulated global economy has proved highly unstable. The pursuit of unending growth is unsustainable, and the social damage that free markets cause is provoking an international backlash. Jane Kelsey explores the impact of globalization on the New Zealand economy. Her account of foreign investment and free trade policies, the role of the transnationals, and the challenges posed by global agreements and networks will open the eyes of readers. Reclaiming the Future opens wide the debate New Zealanders are seeking for the direction of their country in the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis Tax and Optimal Capital Budgeting Decisions by : Suzanne Farrar
Download or read book Tax and Optimal Capital Budgeting Decisions written by Suzanne Farrar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume responds to the system of corporate taxation in the UK and aims to develop mathematical programming models which determine the optimum combination of investment decisions and financing methods for capital budgeting on a post-tax basis, incorporating specific important areas not previously examined in the literature. Suzanne Farrar also aims to achieve operational experience of these models, in order to gain insights into the impact of taxation on project appraisal in complex situations where several potentially distorting tax effects operate simultaneously, and the general practical feasibility of operational use. Beginning with capital investment and the UK Corporate Tax System, Farrar moves onto capital investment appraisal, tax and optimal financing, optimisation models in capital budgeting, the mathematical programming model and operational use of that model.
Book Synopsis A Theory of Market Strategy by : Richard J. Geruson
Download or read book A Theory of Market Strategy written by Richard J. Geruson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense competitive and turbulent economic conditions have forced American businesses to re-examine every aspect of their strategies, from organization to how they publicly present what they sell. A Theory of Market Strategy uses economic theory to derive concepts of market strategy involving the exploitation of the differences in potential consumers and in products. That is, a firm can create a market strategy for a new product that takes into account the fact that different customers will be willing to pay different prices based on their expertise and perception of the product's value. In addition, this strategy considers that consumers will also want different models of the product. In the first half of this work, Geruson develops these concepts, showing that the key to successful market strategy is the exploitation of "two dimensional market heterogeneity", a new idea that integrates and enhances the concepts of product differentiation, price discrimination, market segmentation, information signalling, and customer purchase risk reduction. The second half follows with applications to these concepts in regard to the mainframe computer industry. In-depth examples from IBM and niche computer companies Cray, Tandem, and Control Data show how to practically implement the ideas and provide many lessons on the hidden pitfalls and secrets to success in market strategy. The book derives from Geruson's dissertation at Oxford University and has been augmented by his experience at International Business Machines, Incorporated and Toshiba International, making it accessible to sophisticated practitioners in market strategy and strategic planning.
Book Synopsis The Problem with Survey Research by : George Beam
Download or read book The Problem with Survey Research written by George Beam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Problem with Survey Research makes a case against survey research as a primary source of reliable information. George Beam argues that all survey research instruments, all types of asking-including polls, face-to-face interviews, and focus groups-produce unreliable and potentially inaccurate results. Because those who rely on survey research only see answers to questions, it is impossible for them, or anyone else, to evaluate the results. They cannot know if the answers correspond to respondents' actual behaviors (objective phenomena) or to their true beliefs and opinions (subjective phenomena). Reliable information can only be acquired by observation, experimentation, multiple sources of data, formal model building and testing, document analysis, and comparison. In fifteen chapters divided into six parts-Ubiquity of Survey Research, The Problem, Asking Instruments, Asking Settings, Askers, and Proper Methods and Research Designs-The Problem with Survey Research demonstrates how asking instruments, settings in which asking and answering take place, and survey researchers themselves skew results and thereby make answers unreliable. The last two chapters and appendices examine observation, other methods of data collection and research designs that may produce accurate or correct information, and shows how reliance on survey research can be overcome, and must be.
Book Synopsis Business in the Age of Depression and War by : R.P.T. Davenport-Hines
Download or read book Business in the Age of Depression and War written by R.P.T. Davenport-Hines and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1990. This is the companion title to R.P.T. Davenport-Hines', Capital, Entrepreneurs and Profits. This title responds to the little discussion surrounding the subject of business history. The editor recognised that although the interpretation of business history has been wide, the only distinguishing features was a dependence on, often British, business records which is reflected in the selection of volumes within this collection. This title intends to present a list of searching and analytical, and therefore more satisfying and instructive, histories of British companies from which lessons can be learned.
Book Synopsis Consolidated Financial Reporting by : Paul Taylor
Download or read book Consolidated Financial Reporting written by Paul Taylor and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-05-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consolidated Financial Reporting introduces and examines what is currently the most central and controversial area in financial reporting. In an innovative and distinctive way the author integrates concepts, techniques, controversies and current practice. Techniques are introduced within a framework which shows why they work and what the figures mean. Controversial issues are grounded within modern accounting theory and practice. All core areas and relevant standards are covered including: acquisition and merger accounting; fair values at acquisition; goodwill; consolidated cash flow statements; reporting consolidated financial performance; foreign currency translation; segmental reporting; off-balance sheet financing; and related party transactions. The book is designed so that readers with particular interests - for example in technical matters or concepts and standards - can easily find their way through clearly marked sections. Discussion and calculation reinforce each other - calculations illustrate controversies, and controversies and concepts illustrate techniques. Examples are carefully graduated and care is taken not to obscure principles with unnecessarily complex calculations. Materials are set into an international context. The book is both rigorous and accessible. It is an extensive revision of and successor to the author′s 1987 title Consolidated Financial Statements. Because of recent theoretical and institutional developments, an enormous amount of new material has been added and new teaching approaches to many areas included. There are many more worked examples and exercises as well as approachable discussions of ′state-of-the-art′ advanced topics. The solutions notes for each case are avilable on a disk for instructors who recommend the book for course use.
Book Synopsis New-Product Diffusion Models by : Vijay Mahajan
Download or read book New-Product Diffusion Models written by Vijay Mahajan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product sales, especially for new products, are influenced by many factors. These factors are both internal and external to the selling organization, and are both controllable and uncontrollable. Due to the enormous complexity of such factors, it is not surprising that product failure rates are relatively high. Indeed, new product failure rates have variously been reported as between 40 and 90 percent. Despite this multitude of factors, marketing researchers have not been deterred from developing and designing techniques to predict or explain the levels of new product sales over time. The proliferation of the internet, the necessity or developing a road map to plan the launch and exit times of various generations of a product, and the shortening of product life cycles are challenging firms to investigate market penetration, or innovation diffusion, models. These models not only provide information on new product sales over time but also provide insight on the speed with which a new product is being accepted by various buying groups, such as those identified as innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. New Product Diffusion Models aims to distill, synthesize, and integrate the best thinking that is currently available on the theory and practice of new product diffusion models. This state-of-the-art assessment includes contributions by individuals who have been at the forefront of developing and applying these models in industry. The book's twelve chapters are written by a combined total of thirty-two experts who together represent twenty-five different universities and other organizations in Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Israel, and the United States. The book will be useful for researchers and students in marketing and technological forecasting, as well as those in other allied disciplines who study relevant aspects of innovation diffusion. Practitioners in high-tech and consumer durable industries should also gain new insights from New Product Diffusion Models. The book is divided into five parts: I. Overview; II. Strategic, Global, and Digital Environments for Diffusion Analysis; III. Diffusion Models; IV. Estimation and V. Applications and Software. The final section includes a PC-based software program developed by Gary L. Lilien and Arvind Rangaswamy (1998) to implement the Bass diffusion model. A case on high-definition television is included to illustrate the various features of the software. A free, 15-day trial access period for the updated software can be downloaded from http://www.mktgeng.com/diffusionbook. Among the book's many highlights are chapters addressing the implications posed by the internet, globalization, and production policies upon diffusion of new products and technologies in the population.
