Book Synopsis The Geneva Papers by : Christophe Courbage
Download or read book The Geneva Papers written by Christophe Courbage and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-11-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1976, Raymond Barre, the first President of The Geneva Association, and Orio Giarini, its first Secretary General, founded The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance with the main goal of supporting and encouraging research in the economics of risk and insurance. At that time, research in the field of insurance was still embryonic and insurance was regarded as peripheral social activity. When sustained economic growth gained traction, the function of insurance gradually emerged as a key contributor to economic development. By integrating uncertainty into economic theory and benefiting from the progress of both financial economics and decision theory, research developed further in the field of insurance economics and risk management, and is now prolific. The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance undeniably contributed to this evolution and its impact on research in insurance has largely exceeded what its two founding members could have expected. This volume is a special collection of papers celebrating 40 Years of The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance. The collection looks back at the storied history of The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance and features papers from some of the esteemed authors who have contributed to the journal in its lifetime. This collection of papers highlights just a few of the many themes addressed in the papers published by the journal since it was created. Nevertheless, the selection exemplifies the richness and variety of topics the field of insurance covers.
Book Synopsis Risk Issues and Crisis Management in Public Relations by : Michael Regester
Download or read book Risk Issues and Crisis Management in Public Relations written by Michael Regester and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reputation of an organisation influences who we buy from, work for, supply to and invest in. Intangible assets, of which reputation forms an important part, account for well over 50 per cent of the value of the Fortune 500 and even more in the case of the FTSE 100. This fourth edition of Risk Issues and Crisis Management in Public Relations has been completely revised and aims to define reputation, explores how to value it and provides practical guidelines for effective reputation management. This latest edition features new sections on the effects of recent world events, Corporate Social Responsibility, climate change and sustainability, legal revisions and the use of the Internet in a crisis. Featuring new case studies on Oxfam V Starbucks, Sony, Dell, Ribena, BP, Bernard Matthews and the bird flu issue, Northern Rock, Walmart, Celebrity Big Brother 07, the Cadbury Salmonella outbreak, the Virgin train crash and the Buncefield Oil Explosion, the book charts how rapidly the reputation management agenda moves and yet how slowly business learns.
Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Risk Communication by : Asa Boholm
Download or read book New Perspectives on Risk Communication written by Asa Boholm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That risk communication ranks high on the policymaking agenda is beyond discussion today. The field is a point of intersection of social communication, practical management and policy making. It covers such diverse activities as to inform and educate the public about risk, and risk management in order to influence attitudes and behaviour, to act in situations of emergency or crises, to aid in decision-making and to assist in conflict resolution. Communication has grown into a major concern in current risk governance based on network co-ordinated management of public affairs conducted by authorities and companies and is recognized as a key component in the government of risk. This is especially salient in policy fields relating to environmental planning and resource management, urban planning, chemical and food regulation, or infrastructure planning, development and maintenance. This book explores risk communication research with a focus on new theoretical perspectives, research findings, and applied goals. It reflects on a broad range of innovative theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches and empirical areas. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Risk Research.

Book Synopsis The Risk Management of Everything by : Michael Power
Download or read book The Risk Management of Everything written by Michael Power and published by Demos. This book was released on 2004 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the development of a new risk management culture within professions, companies and governments. The obsession with managing risk is creating organisations which are not so much risk averse as ‘responsibility averse’. In medicine, doctors are practising ‘defensive medicine’ where opinions are heavily qualified with caveats and patients left to make big decisions. The report also refers to growing evidence that since Enron’s failure, major accountancy firms are declining to work with ‘high risk’ clients - the very ones that should be thoroughly audited. “When disclaimer paragraphs are longer than the professional opinions they follow, we know something has gone wrong,” says author Professor Michael Power, a director of the ESRC Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation at the London School of Economics. “In the interests of transparency, small print should be made large and ruled out as a secondary risk management ploy. “The trends in professions such as medicine and auditing signal a withdrawal of individual judgement from the public. Minimal records are kept, staff are cautioned about the use of email, and normal correspondence is littered with disclaimers. The risk management of everything implies a society of ‘small print’.” Power sees the rise of the ‘risk management of everything’ as a related trend to the audit culture, which included the government’s now widely criticised love of targets as a policy tool. The Audit Explosion, Power’s previous Demos pamphlet, predicted that the overuse of audit leads to a focus on measurable outputs rather than real outcomes. “The most influential dimension of the audit explosion is the process by which [organisations] are made auditable and structured to conform to the need to be monitored,” Power wrote in 1994. Power’s new book argues that risk management is the ‘new audit’ and is having a similar distorting effect on the performance of professionals, companies and government.
Book Synopsis The Analytics of Risk Model Validation by : George A. Christodoulakis
Download or read book The Analytics of Risk Model Validation written by George A. Christodoulakis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-11-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk model validation is an emerging and important area of research, and has arisen because of Basel I and II. These regulatory initiatives require trading institutions and lending institutions to compute their reserve capital in a highly analytic way, based on the use of internal risk models. It is part of the regulatory structure that these risk models be validated both internally and externally, and there is a great shortage of information as to best practise. Editors Christodoulakis and Satchell collect papers that are beginning to appear by regulators, consultants, and academics, to provide the first collection that focuses on the quantitative side of model validation. The book covers the three main areas of risk: Credit Risk and Market and Operational Risk. *Risk model validation is a requirement of Basel I and II *The first collection of papers in this new and developing area of research *International authors cover model validation in credit, market, and operational risk
