Book Synopsis The American Indian Mind in a Linear World by : Donald L. Fixico
Download or read book The American Indian Mind in a Linear World written by Donald L. Fixico and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, there are three approaches to studying American Indians: from how white Americans approach Indian studies, from the dynamics or exchange of Indian-white relations and from the Indian point of view. Donald Fixico, an American Indian, has been teaching and writing history for a quarter of a century. This book is the direct result of his experience as a scholar who 'thinks like an Indian' in an academic environment created predominantly by non-Indian thinkers. This book addresses current approaches to studying Native American traditional knowledge and acknowledges an Indian intellectualism that has up until now been ignored in studying Native American history. Written primarily from inside the Native world, but fully cognizant of the American cultures outside of that world, his unique voice speaks to a need for understanding the interior Native world: a world in which linear thinking is atypical and circularity is preferable.
Book Synopsis Who's Fit to be a Parent? by : Mukti Jain Campion
Download or read book Who's Fit to be a Parent? written by Mukti Jain Campion and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-29 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the notion of parenting and parenthood have increasingly come under examination from the media and professionals and, in particular, government and politicians. More and more, parents are being held to account by society for their failure to deliver the sort of citizens it wants. But what are parents supposed to be doing? Are there some people that are inherently unfit to be parents and does there exist a body of knowledge that defines fit parenting? Who's fit to be a parent? covers this highly topical and important subject in a stimulating and accessible way that cuts across numerous professional disciplines and opens up the boundaries between professional and personal expertise on parenting. It is essential reading for any professional or student of social work and social policy, those working in the voluntary services concerned with the family, social policy makers and for anyone interested in understanding what it means to be a parent today.

Book Synopsis The Cherokee Diaspora by : Gregory D. Smithers
Download or read book The Cherokee Diaspora written by Gregory D. Smithers and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cherokee are one of the largest Native American tribes in the United States, with more than three hundred thousand people across the country claiming tribal membership and nearly one million people internationally professing to have at least one Cherokee Indian ancestor. In this revealing history of Cherokee migration and resettlement, Gregory Smithers uncovers the origins of the Cherokee diaspora and explores how communities and individuals have negotiated their Cherokee identities, even when geographically removed from the Cherokee Nation headquartered in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Beginning in the eighteenth century, the author transports the reader back in time to tell the poignant story of the Cherokee people migrating throughout North America, including their forced exile along the infamous Trail of Tears (1838-39). Smithers tells a remarkable story of courage, cultural innovation, and resilience, exploring the importance of migration and removal, land and tradition, culture and language in defining what it has meant to be Cherokee for a widely scattered people.

Book Synopsis Migrating Identities and Perspectives: Latin America and the Caribbean in Local and Global Contexts by : Mohammad H. Tamdgidi
Download or read book Migrating Identities and Perspectives: Latin America and the Caribbean in Local and Global Contexts written by Mohammad H. Tamdgidi and published by Ahead Publishing House (imprint: Okcir Press). This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Fall 2009 (VII, 4) issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge entitled “Migrating Identities and Perspectives: Latin America and the Caribbean in Local and Global Contexts,” focuses on the complexity of identity formations experienced by migrants in the world-system, with a regional focus on Latin America and the Caribbean which have been at the heart of many recent scholarly debates in migration studies and the subsequent emergence of transnationalism. The collection can be therefore understood as an attempt to establish an intellectual dialogue between different academic disciplines, as well as theoretical perspectives. Among the various themes of this issue is the importance of context, as illustrated through the use of comparisons, and the application to the domestic migration context of theoretical approaches commonly used to explain international migration. Another theme that emerges among these papers is that of integration, or in the case of deportees—a very specific group of immigrants—reintegration. A crucial aspect of incorporation is identity formation, often central to migration research and highlighted in a variety of ways in the papers. Contributors include: Terry-Ann Jones (also as journal issue guest editor), Eric Mielants (also as journal issue guest editor), Per Unheim, David Carment, Carlo Dade, Dwaine Plaza, Cédric Audebert, Heike Drotbohm, and Mohammad H. Tamdgidi (also as journal editor-in-chief). Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge is a publication of OKCIR: The Omar Khayyam Center for Integrative Research in Utopia, Mysticism, and Science (Utopystics).
