Book excerpt: This is the first biography of the short but exciting life of Albert Champion-record-setting bicyclist and motorcyclist, daredevil race car driver, early automobile innovator with thirty US patents, charismatic ladies' man, and celebrity of the Jazz Age. Though most Americans have heard of the two companies he founded-Champion Spark Plug and ACDelco-few know much about the flamboyant man behind the companies. The book's lively narrative describes the many adventures of the Frenchman who rose from poverty in Paris to great wealth and fame in both his native France and the United States. As a bicycle racer, Champion set more than a hundred world records. When the urban speed limit was 8 mph, he was the first ever to drive a motorcycle a mile under a minute. Then a car-racing crash in Brooklyn snapped a leg bone that kept him in traction for eleven weeks. Handicapped but undeterred, he hobbled out of the hospital on crutches and recovered to win the French national cycling championship. He subsequently invested his prize money to become a tycoon in the American auto industry, working closely with the leading players in this new revolutionary industry. Good looking and a natty dresser, he was an incorrigible ladies' man, whose many dalliances finally ended in a love triangle that resulted in his death under mysterious circumstances.

Cade has managed to survive the duel with the Hydra Alpha—barely. But the Games are far from over. By order of their cruel and mysterious overlord, Abaddon, Cade and his friends are sent off to war against the Greys, a humanoid race who have far surpassed humans in technology on their home planet. This attempt to move up the leaderboard, however, leads Cade to a game-changing revelation: The Pantheon—the millennia-old alien masterminds behind the Games—have a weakness. With the right artifacts scavenged from the land of Acies and a heavy dose of courage and luck, Cade has exactly one chance to end their tyranny forever. But if he fails, the lives of his friends—and the survival of Earth itself—will be forfeit.

Book excerpt: Even among the most elite performers, certain athletes stand out as a cut above the rest, able to outperform in clutch, game-deciding moments. These athletes prove that raw athletic ability doesn't necessarily translate to a superior on-field experience—its the mental game that matters most. Sports participation—from the recreational to the collegiate Division I level—is at an all-time high. While the caliber of their games may differ, athletes at every level have one thing in common: the desire to excel. In The Champion's Mind, sports psychologist Jim Afremow, PhD, offers the same advice he uses with Olympians, Heisman Trophy winners, and professional athletes, including: • How to get in a "zone," thrive on a team, and stay humble • How to progress within a sport and sustain long-term excellence • Customizable pre-performance routines to hit full power when the gun goes off or the puck is dropped With hundreds of useful tips, breakthrough science, and cutting-edge workouts from the world's top trainers, The Champion's Mind will help you shape your body to ensure a longer, healthier, happier lifetime.

Champion of Choice tells the remarkable story of how Sadik, born into a prominent Indian family in 1929, came to be the world’s foremost advocate for women’s health and reproductive rights, the first female director of a United Nations agency, and “one of the most powerful women in the world” (London Times). An obstetrician, wife, mother, and devout Muslim, Sadik has been a courageous and tireless advocate for women, insisting on discussing the difficult issues that impact their lives: education, contraception, abortion, as well as rape and other forms of violence. After Sadik joined the fledgling UN Population Fund in 1971, her groundbreaking strategy for providing females with education and the tools to control their own fertility has dramatically influenced the global birthrate. This book is the first to examine Sadik’s contribution to history and the unconventional methods she has employed to go head-to-head with world leaders to improve millions of women’s lives. Interspersed between the chapters recounting Sadik’s life are vignettes of females around the globe who represent her campaign against domestic abuse, child marriage, genital mutilation, and other human rights violations. With its insights into the political, religious, and domestic battles that have dominated women’s destinies, Sadik’s life story is as inspirational as it is dramatic.

Book excerpt: "I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me." He was born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., in Louisville, Kentucky. His very first boxing coach, former police officer Joe Martin, told him, "You better learn how to fight before you start challenging people." Once considered the underdog, Cassius, later known as Muhammad Ali, would eventually win the title of heavyweight champion of the world. Acclaimed author Walter Dean Myers recounts the champ's most famous fights and examines the depth and complexity of the larger-than-life legend Muhammad Ali. The bold, vibrant art of Alix Delinois reflects the beauty and power of the man who could "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

Book excerpt: Steve Yzerman is one of the most admired hockey players in one of the sport’s most exciting eras. This is the story of his metamorphosis from Ontario Hockey League sniper to the ultimate NHLer. Stevie Y went fourth overall in the very strong 1983 draft, and has more than double the points of almost anyone else from that year, which includes luminaries like Cam Neely, Sylvain Turgeon, and Pat LaFontaine. He’s one of only three players in NHL history to reach 155 points in a season; Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux are pretty elite company. Only eight players have reached 1000 points in fewer games. And yet for years Yzerman was seen as something of an underachiever. Amazingly, he was overlooked for the ’87 and ’91 Canada Cup squads. Although he was handed the Wings’ captaincy in 1986 when he was only 21, Detroit fans wondered when he would reverse the team’s fortunes. When the Red Wings were bumped from the early rounds of the playoffs in the early ’90s, and were swept in the ’95 final, many fingers pointed at the captain. But a Stanley Cup victory in ’97 elevated Yzerman to greatness. Like Gretzky, Lemieux, and Messier, the centres who had eclipsed him for roster spots on Team Canada, Yzerman proved he was a winner. He proved it again the next season, when he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs’ most valuable player, and yet again in 2002 (when many thought he should have won his second Conn Smythe). He was also pivotal in Team Canada’s first Olympic gold medal win since 1956. He is now in his 21st season with the Red Wings, the longest-serving captain in NHL history. He is one of the league’s highest scorers, and has been called the all-time greatest two-way player, as his Selke Trophy attests. He is also a gritty, inspiring example, as his Masterton Trophy suggests. Though the Red Wings were bounced in the first round of the ’02-’03 playoffs, Yzerman’s leadership and resolve shone though. Douglas Hunter’s Yzerman brings the Wings’ captain to life. Skilled, fearless, indomitable, and affable, Steve Yzerman is perhaps the most-loved and most respected player in the NHL today. If you love hockey, you can’t help loving Steve Yzerman. From the Hardcover edition.
