Book Synopsis The Jockey Club Collection by : David Oldrey
Download or read book The Jockey Club Collection written by David Oldrey and published by Philip Wilson Publishers, Limited. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jockey Club's first premises in St James's Street reflected its members' habit of living among racing pictures, but their collective tastes could only be fully indulged after it built a large Coffee Room in Newmarket in 1752 and then multiplied the accommodation in 1771 on the site still occupied today. Over the centuries members have given the Club scores of pictures marking the triumphs of their horses. More have come as bequests of prized possessions and recently a few have been added by purchase. Some of the paintings by Stubbs, Herring, Munnings and others are amongst the best racing art in existence. Many are by lesser artists but taken together as a whole the contents of the Jockey Clubs Rooms are enough to fascinate anyone with even a passing interest in sporting pictures or racing. This catalogue much extends the previous one published in 2006 which was arranged in the order of the Rooms in which paintings were hung; in this new publication works are arranged under the names of their creators with short biographies of the more important artists. There are some 50 additions of which perhaps the most important are life-sized bronze friends for Hyperion, a particularly fine Ferneley, and a portrait of The Queen with her Gold Cup winner, Estimate. The Collection consists of several hundred paintings, prints, bronzes and trophies plus some slightly macabre bits of champions made into all sorts of artefacts, usually mounted feet. Taken together they give an accurate impression of the importance of the Jockey Club's contribution to the development of the thoroughbred, for long the fastest and still the most beautiful way of getting from here to there.

Beezley illuminates many facets of everyday Mexican life lying at the heart of this conflict and change, including sports, storytelling, healthcare, technology, and the traditional Easter-time Judas burnings that became a primary focus of the strife during those years. Book excerpt: BLUE JAY SLAYER whispers and shouts at us but never tells us what to think. It is dark at times, yes, but not what you'd expect: playful sometimes, angry sometimes, reticent when necessary. It's brimming with curses and gifts. Matt Hart digs up the dead with his words and points to what we think is real but makes us question what we initially thought. Ken Henson gives us glimpses of who he may be with his illustrations of the flaming reality of the dark side but without the hellish cliches. Well, maybe there are a few. BLUE JAY SLAYER will take you like you could get permanently lost in that world and never come back but you do. You come back feeling absolved."

Download or read book The Great Black Jockeys written by Edward Hotaling and published by Prima Lifestyles. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a century before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, black athletes were dominating America's first national sport. The sport was horse racing, and the greatest jockeys of all were slaves and the sons of slaves. Cheered by thousands of Americans in the North and South, they rode to victory in all of the major stakes, including the very first Kentucky Derby. Although their glory days ranged from the early 1700s to the turn of the 20th century, the memory of these great black jockeys was erased from history. Who were these athletes and why have their names vanished without a trace? "This may be the most fascinating untold sports story in American history. We are lucky that it is so well told now by Mr. Hotaling in his wonderfully written book." -- Charles Osgood, anchor, CBS News Sunday Morning "The Great Black Jockeys is the first book about the lives and times of the forgotten men whose extraordinary skills were a wonder to behold, men with names like "Honest Ike" Murphy, Abe Hawkins, Willie Simms, Austin Curtis, Jimmy Winkfield, and dozens more. This is also a story of a young country where whole towns turned out in cleared fields to cheer and place wagers on magnificent horses and the men who rode them, and where the greatest athletes in the land were the property of others. For fleeting moments on the racecourse black riders in colorful silks tasted the glory and freedom that slavery had denied them. In "The Great Black Jockeys, the exploits and courage of America's earliest and best athletes are finally remembered.

Download or read book Form written by Kieren Fallon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SPORTS BOOK AWARDS INTERNATIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE YEAR Kieren Fallon was one of the world’s greatest jockeys, but his career was littered with controversial incidents. Now, in his powerful and honest autobiography, he tells all. 'The most eagerly anticipated racing autobiography for many years' Greg Wood, Guardian As a jockey, Kieren Fallon had a unique rapport with his horses, often coaxing them to victory when others had struggled. His skill and commitment made him a punter’s favourite. His magnificent record, which saw him crowned Champion Jockey on six occasions, ensured he became one of racing’s biggest stars. But that was only ever part of the story. Having come over to the UK from Ireland to make his name, Fallon’s combative nature brought him to the attention of the racing authorities. When he dragged a rival jockey off his mount in 1994, he began a series of run-ins that would eventually see him on trial in the Old Bailey, accused of race fixing. Although the judge eventually ruled that there was no case to answer, the damage to his career and reputation had been done. In Form, Kieren Fallon provides a searingly honest account of his life, and the pressures he faced to get to the top of his sport, where winning was never enough, and where relaxation came in the shape of a bottle of vodka or a meal that had to be ‘flipped’ immediately to ensure he maintained his weight. He worked with some of the best trainers and won all the biggest races, but true happiness only ever really came to him when he was on the back of a horse – a joy that he still feels now that he has retired from racing as he rides work early in the morning. Brutally honest as well as entertaining, this is a unique sporting memoir.
