Book excerpt: Claiming Her Billion-Dollar Birthright - Maureen Child The revelation turned Erica Prentice's world upside down - by birth, she belonged to a wealthy Colorado dynasty, her real father had left her a fortune and Jarrod family attorney Christian Hanford was there to show her the ropes. As Mr Tall, Dark and Handsome escorted her around Aspen, Erica was in for a second shock - her fiery attraction to the strictly off-limits attorney. Fraternising with the Jarrod heiress could get Christian fired. Which would she choose: duty to her family dynasty...or desire for a dynamic bachelor? Falling For His Proper Mistress - Tessa Radley It had been forty-nine days - and nights - since Guy Jarrod last touched Avery Lancaster. Yes, the successful businessman had believed the rumours of her gold-digging ways, but she was an itch he needed to scratch. And being forced to work with her during Aspen's food and wine gala meant she was right within his reach. Once he finally had his fill, he would send her on her way...out of his life for good. But what if the rumours were false? Had he made a mistress out of the woman who should have been his wife? Expecting The Rancher's Heir - Kathie DeNosky Melissa Jarrod treasured her secret no-strings affair with rich rancher Shane McDermott. Then a pregnancy test rocked the Aspen heiress's world. An out-of-wedlock baby would spook conservative investors in her family's luxury resort business just as she and her siblings were settling in to run Jarrod Ridge. But Shane was a man of honour - curbing his playboy ways and proposing came naturally. For Shane, this was strictly a marriage of convenience. Melissa, on the other hand, wouldn't settle for anything less than love - for her and her child.

Book excerpt: New York City's Broadway district is by far the most prestigious and lucrative venue for American performers, playwrights, entertainers and technicians. While there are many reference works and critical studies of selected Broadway plays or musicals and even more works about the highlights of the American theater, this is the first single-volume book to cover all of the activities on Broadway between 1919 and 2007. More than 14,000 productions are briefly described, including hundreds of plays, musicals, revivals, and specialty programs. Entries include famous and forgotten works, designed to give a complete picture of Broadway's history and development, its evolution since the early twentieth century, and its rise to unparalleled prominence in the world of American theater. The productions are identified in terms of plot, cast, personnel, critical reaction, and significance in the history of New York theater and culture. In addition to a chronological list of all Broadway productions between 1919 and 2007, the book also includes approximately 600 important productions performed on Broadway before 1919.

Book excerpt: This book deals with two remarkable events--the worldwide transformations of the Jews in the modern age and the revival of the ancient Hebrew language. It is a book about social and cultural history addressed not only to the professional historian, and a book about Jews addressed not only to Jewish readers. It tries to rethink a wide field of cultural phenomena and present the main ideas to the intelligent reader, or, better, present a "family picture" of related and contiguous ideas. Many names and details are mentioned, which may not all be familiar to the uninitiated; their function is to provide some concrete texture for this dramatic story, but the focus is on the story itself. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1993. Book Synopsis Retaking Rationality by : Richard L. Revesz
Download or read book Retaking Rationality written by Richard L. Revesz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-16 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That America's natural environment has been degraded and despoiled over the past 25 years is beyond dispute. Nor has there been any shortage of reasons why-short-sighted politicians, a society built on over-consumption, and the dramatic weakening of environmental regulations. In Retaking Rationality, Richard L. Revesz and Michael A. Livermore argue convincingly that one of the least understood-and most important-causes of our failure to protect the environment has been a misguided rejection of reason. The authors show that environmentalists, labor unions, and other progressive groups have declined to participate in the key governmental proceedings concerning the cost-benefit analysis of federal regulations. As a result of this vacuum, industry groups have captured cost-benefit analysis and used it to further their anti-regulatory ends. Beginning in 1981, the federal Office of Management and Budget and the federal courts have used cost-benefit analysis extensively to determine which environmental, health, and safety regulations are approved and which are sent back to the drawing board. The resulting imbalance in political participation has profoundly affected the nation's regulatory and legal landscape. But Revesz and Livermore contend that economic analysis of regulations is necessary and that it needn't conflict with-and can in fact support-a more compassionate approach to environmental policy. Indeed, they show that we cannot give up on rationality if we truly want to protect our natural environment. Retaking Rationality makes clear that by embracing and reforming cost-benefit analysis, and by joining reason and compassion, progressive groups can help enact strong environmental and public health regulation.
