Book excerpt: The Ivy is the quintessential London restaurant, where people go to see and be seen, encapsulating everything that’s glamorous and romantic about dining in the capital. The original Ivy was established in 1917 on the very site where it still stands, in the heart of London's Theatreland. The epitome of glamour, there can be few film stars, musicians, royals, writers, artists and raconteurs who have not passed through its hallowed front doors. There are now also nine Ivy brasseries in London and more opening nationwide. In 2017 this iconic landmark celebrates its centenary and, twenty years from the publication of the original Ivy cookbook, it’s time for a new peek behind those famous stained-glass windows. The Ivy Now contains all the dishes, secrets and stories behind the restaurant’s success. Charismatic Director and former maître d’ Fernando Peire tells the story – the history, the theatre, the celebrities and the scandal – and with classic recipes from Executive Chef Gary Lee, including the Ivy’s signature shepherd's pie, Asian-inspired salads, desserts and cocktails, this is the must-have book for a new generation of Ivy fans.

Book excerpt: Every year, Reader’s Digest readers send in tens of thousands of jokes and funny anecdotes, in their quest for a $100 check and, as an extra benefit, eternal glory: to have their joke published in the world’s best-read magazine. One man is stopping them from their quest. Andy Simmons. It takes a sense of humor. And Andy certainly has that. Not only is he the arbiter of all things funny in Reader’s Digest; he is their Mark Twain, Bill Cosby, and even their David Sedaris. In other words, Andy is the guy Reader’s Digest turns to whenever they need a funny story all of America can appreciate. He’s perfect for the job. Andy takes great delight in the funny and oddball side of everyday life. In Now That’s Funny!, Andy presents his most popular, funniest writings on all things America, some exclusive and all-new, some taken from the award-winning pages of Reader’s Digest. You’ll discover the Andy that goes out and tries things. His first-person tales of taking dance lessons, participating in a Revolutionary War reenactment, and even taking stand-up comedy lessons are some of the funniest articles to ever appear in Reader’s Digest. Then you discover the Andy that observes America. His roundups of dumb criminals, crazy lawsuits, ridiculous excuses and out-of-touch scientific research will have you roaring with laughter -- and feeling much better about yourself. Then there’s Andy, the family man. You’ll laugh out loud as he goes in search of his inner macho --or for the next stop on his vacation, if only he can find the directions. And Andy’s observations on marriage and fatherhood are as accurate as they are funny. Finally, there’s Andy the jokester. Here are tales from the job of trying to think, act, and be funny every workday, no matter what the dog did this morning on the rug. Tales of his sit-downs with comic legends from Robin Williams to Woody Allen will have you in stitches. Andy also shares his favorite jokes -- many of them too edgy for printing in Reader’s Digest! Add it up, and it’s a book filled with hundreds of feel-good, laugh-out-loud moments about life in these United States -- exactly the type of reading we need today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vatican Conspiracy: Intrigue in St. Peter’s Square tells the untold story of the secret Vatican-US connection from World War II to the 1980s under President Reagan. You will learn a little-known story of an American military officer who was killed (some say by his own men) in Italy during the war, culminating in a congressional investigation when the war ended. You will learn of James Angleton’s work as an American spy in Italy during the war and his relationship with the Church, and how the OSS infiltrated agents into the Vatican to aid the efforts to oust Hitler. Kross then goes extensively into the so-called Rat Line which allowed Nazi leaders like Josef Mengele, Klaus Barbie and Adolf Eichmann to escape to South America with the help of the US. The book covers Operation Paperclip and Operation Safehaven in which Switzerland laundered money form Germany in order to pay that nation’s cost of the war. The final chapters delve into the most recent intrigues in the Vatican, including the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in Rome and who might have been behind it (the Soviet Union or Bulgaria), and the mysterious death of Pope John Paul I in Rome, who died after serving only 33 days in office. Also covered is the Vatican Bank scandal involving Roberto Calvi and an American Bishop named Paul Marcinkus. The final chapter involves the murders of two Swiss Guardsmen by one of their own men. This is a tale that most readers of history do not know, but one that must be told. History is never what it seems to be, not cut and dried, not exactly what we were led to believe.
