Book excerpt: A woman steps out of a steamy Yellowstone panorama into the perspective of another fisherman. She is Marta Senkova, daughter of high level Soviet officials. He is Jonathon Masters, New York engineering entrepreneur. Their fly rods, and then the intrigue of his special trout fly, are the first threads of the bond that draws him toward this beautiful, mercurial, girl. This bond will also pull him, and his men, into an orbit with her diplomat father that takes them inside a brotherhood of Western style expediters, a hidden vitality of the Soviets since Lenin, and then onto a central stage of the perestroika. Marta will also be in this collaboration of talents, and in a way that reawakens the bond between her father, Ivan Senkov, and her mother—the redoubtable Marta prototype, Natalia Senkova. This nose-poke of the Masters’ crew will provoke a massively impetuous put up or shut up gauntlet from the subterranean Soviet talents it has bumped into—a challenge that Jon Masters can’t untangle from the new trends Russian woman who matched him on a trout stream, and now is exercising her other intrigues on behalf of this new challenge—and love for the American man.

Book excerpt: The technical man, more than any other, has put the shapes and habits, opportunities and neglects, into our time. If a man with such a bent reaches a place where he questions some of his paths, he will usually need more help than he can find within himself to take, maybe blaze, another path. Here, a man like this—Paul Sanger, still young, but old enough to sign for material to make a conscience—stumbles into accidents of aristocratic environment and friendships that will warp him into a situation of impossible love, and pull him into new technical vistas that will qualify, and energize, him for his path changes. These things will also put him in the way of another possibly impossible woman, with a conscience like his own, who refuses the obstacles posed by him in looking at her own future. The problems here—technical, academic, emotional, ethical—are contemporary...and timeless.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Places is a tale about a woman’s spiritual search, how that search calls her to the land and how the land teaches. The telling spirals, exploring loss of faith, loss of voice, and the finding of a different, broader faith and a deeper, stronger voice. Her journey takes her to many special wilderness areas across Alberta — from the edge of the Canadian Shield to mountains, prairies, boreal forest, and parkland. In the telling of her journey, she interweaves migration, evolution, family, landscape, noise, silence, and song. Remarkable for the breadth of its treatment of the spiritual journey, combining prose and poetry, the book delves into old traditions (Aboriginal, Old European, mystical Christian) and new. Genealogists, geologists, students, and instructors of natural history and theology will find this book of great value in their study and in their courses.

Book excerpt: In the early 1980s there were several published reports of recent, unexplained increases in mortality of red spruce in the Adirondack Mountains and the northern Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States. These reports coincided with documentation of reductions in radial growth of several species of pine in the southeastern United States, and with the severe, rapid, and widespread decline of Norway spruce, silver fir, and some hardwoods in central Europe. In all of these instances, atmospheric deposition was hypothesized as the cause of the decline. (Throughout this volume, we use the term "decline" to refer to a loosely synchronized regional-scale deterioration of tree health which is brought about by a combination of stress factors. These may be biotic or abiotic in nature, and the combinations may differ from site to site. ) Heated public debate about the causes and possible cures for these forest declines ensued. Through the course of this debate, it became clear that information about forest health and air pollution effects on forests was inadequate to meet policymakers' needs. Ecology and Decline of Red Spruce in the Eastern United States addresses that gap for eastern spruce fir forests and represents the culmination of a great deal of research conducted in recent years. The focus is on red spruce because the decline of red spruce was both dramatic and inexplicable and because of the great amount of information gathered on red spruce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant collection of Texas paintings and prints hangs humbly and inconspicuously throughout the offices, conference rooms, and hallways of Texas A&M University Press. These works comprise the Frank H. Wardlaw Collection of Texas Art, named in honor of the Press’s founding director, who was one of the genuine publishing icons of his day. Established in 1983 at the dedication of the new headquarters of Texas A&M University Press on the campus of Texas A&M, the collection began with twenty inaugural contributions that came as gifts from respected Texas artists whose art appeared in the books Wardlaw had shepherded to publication at the Press. Since then, the collection—which continues to be linked to artists published by the Press—has grown to house more than one hundred paintings, photographs, and illustrations. Among the noted artists featured in the collection are E. M. (Buck) Schiwetz, Otis Dozier, Michael Frary, Everett Spruce, Emily Guthrie Smith, Jerry Bywaters, and, among more recent additions, Dorothy Hood and Richard Stout. Through interviews with longtime staff and research into the Press’s book files and correspondence, William and Linda Reaves have uncovered the captivating history of this unlikely collection. In A Book Maker’s Art, they present the freshly assembled story of the Wardlaw collection, from its modest yet unique beginning to its present-day status as one of the university’s excellent collections of Texas art, reflecting the exceptional bond of arts and letters that has come to distinguish Texas A&M University Press.
