Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Itinerary of Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela By S. Asher Volume I Bibliography The present work, though well known to the learned of the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, was not printed before the year 1543, when the first edition appeared at Constantinople; numerous reprints were called for in the course of time, of which the following is a catalogue. Editions in Hebrew Only: 1. This, the first edition, is so extremely rare, that notwithstanding the most diligent search, I have not been able to meet with any complete copy. It "has been" in the "'Bibliotheque Royale'" at Paris, but upon my inquiries after it--inquiries which met with the kindest attention--it could nowhere be found! The Oppenheim division of the Bodleian library contains and incomplete copy of this rare book, being deficient of the first 14 pages or one quarter of the whole work. In consequence of this unfortunate circumstance, I have not been able to report the title as fully as I ought to have done, according tot he rules of bibliography. Like most other hebrew books, which issued from the early Constantinople prresses, this is but a very poor specimen of correctness and typography. All the mistakes of this 'Princeps' have unfortunately crept into the editions noticed below No. 3. 4. and 10., and have led the translators into error. The rarity constitutes the only value of this edition. On the title a globe in a square, surrounded by hebrew verses; the preface on the verso of the title. 2. This second edition is perhaps rarer still than the first, and having evidently been printed from another MS, is indispensably necessary for a critique of the work. The text is much purer than that of the former, and in many instances its readings give a sense, where the former is too corrupt to be understood. Unfortunately this Edition was unknown to the early translators, B. Arias Montanus and L'Empereur, who would have made less mistakes and formed a more correct judgment of our author, had they been able to compare it with that of Constantinople. It forms the groundwork of the present edition and translation. No public library in France or Germany, most of which I have personally visited or inquired at by correspondence, possesses a copy and the only one now known to exist is in the Oppenheim division of the Bodleian library at Oxford. 3. This is a reprint of the first edition, it repeats faithfully all the mistakes of that 'Princeps' and has been alter'd in those passages, where in speaking of christians the former reads 'the misled' into the 'Nazarenes' probably because it was revised by christian censors. Some of the copies appear to... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable prices. This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics, unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader organically to the art of bindery and book-making. We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes beyond the mere words of the text.

Some three years earlier he had left his native place-Tudela, on the Ebro in the north of Spain. After passing through the prosperous towns which lie on the Gulf of Lyons, he visited Rome and South Italy. From Otranto he crossed over to Corfu, traversed Greece, and then came to Constantinople, of which he gives an interesting account. Very telling, for example, are the words: "They hire from amongst all nations warriors called Barbarians to fight with the Sultan of the Seljuks; for the natives are not warlike, but are as women who have no strength to fight." After visiting the Islands of the Aegean, as well as Rhodes and Cyprus, he passed on to Antioch, and followed the well-known southern route skirting the Mediterranean, visiting the important cities along the coast, all of which were then in the hands of the Franks. Having regard to the strained relations between the Christians and Saracens, and to the fights and forays of the Latin knights, we can understand that Benjamin had to follow a very circuitous way to enable him to visit all the places of note in Palestine.

Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the classics of Jewish literature, from the Bible to modern times, by "one of America’s finest literary critics" (Wall Street Journal). Jews have long embraced their identity as “the people of the book.” But outside of the Bible, much of the Jewish literary tradition remains little known to nonspecialist readers. The People and the Books shows how central questions and themes of our history and culture are reflected in the Jewish literary canon: the nature of God, the right way to understand the Bible, the relationship of the Jews to their Promised Land, and the challenges of living as a minority in Diaspora. Adam Kirsch explores eighteen classic texts, including the biblical books of Deuteronomy and Esther, the philosophy of Maimonides, the autobiography of the medieval businesswoman Glückel of Hameln, and the Zionist manifestoes of Theodor Herzl. From the Jews of Roman Egypt to the mystical devotees of Hasidism in Eastern Europe, The People and the Books brings the treasures of Jewish literature to life and offers new ways to think about their enduring power and influence.

Book excerpt: First published in 1930. The wandering Jew is a very real character in the great drama of history. He has travelled as nomad and settler, as fugitive and conqueror, as exile and colonist and as merchant and scholar. Of necessity bilingual and therefore the master of many languages, the Jew was the ideal commercial traveller and interpreter. Based on the volume of 24 Hebrew texts of Jewish travellers by J D Eisenstein, this volume begins with the ninth century. After the sixteenth century geographical discoveries had made the whole world familiar to most people. Consequently, the wandering Jew becomes less the diplomatist or scientist but still remains a link between the scattered members of the Diaspora. The volume ends in the middle of the eighteenth century and taken as a whole provides a survey of Jewish travel during the Middle Ages. For this translation, some of the texts have been abridged, whilst retaining many of the original notes.
