Book excerpt: Since the inception of evaluations and grading schedules for municipal fire departments, questions as to the how they were developed, their use and benefits and whether or not their benefits outweighed their costs were asked. These were questions that continued to bother departments that had been considering an evaluation by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). Because the ISO has ignored the input of the fire service and did not keep pace with current fire service trends, the costs of preparing and living up to the ISO's standard outweighed it's benefits.

It is the first academic analysis of national standardization organizations. These organizations exist in every country and may be private or governmental organizations. The first national standardization th organizations were founded in the early decades of the 20 century and were aimed at rationalizing industrial production. Their mode of operation reflects the sense of co operation at the national level and - in the telecommunications and electrotechnical field - at the intemationallevel as well. Now, however, the scene has changed, with companies operating internationally. Standards for products, processes, and services are crucial factors in determining success or failure on a fiercely competitive market, especially when functional compatibility is a prerequisite, as is the case in computer and telecommunications technologies. As a consequence, rather homogeneous needs of participants in standardization have given way to conflicting interests. This prompts a discussion about the traditional role of national standardization organizations. They increasingly depend on their exclusive links to the international standardization organizations ISO and IEC, and, in the case of Europe, the regional organizations CEN and CENELEC. In many cases, formal standardization organizations are not the obvious bodies for developing standards to meet business needs. Is this inevitable or could they improve performance and regain their market share? Henk de Vries answers this question against the background of current developments in standardization at the international, European, and national levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide to meeting IEC 62304 software-development requirements within the context of an ISO 13485 quality management system (QMS). The book proves this can be done with a minimum amount of friction, overlap, and back-and-forth between development stages. It essentially shows you how you should shape your medical-software development processes to fit in with the QMS processes in the smartest and leanest way possible. By following the advice in this book, you can reuse processes from your QMS, ensure your product-realization processes meet the requirements for medical-software development, and marry all the requirements together using tried and tested solutions into one efficient system. The expertise of the authors here goes beyond just the experiences of one real-world project as they tap into over 30 years of experience and countless software and software-assessment projects to distill their advice. The book takes a hands-on approach by first teaching you the top 25 lessons to know before starting to develop a process for medical-software development. It then walks you through the expectations placed on the key aspects of such a process by the key standards. The book progresses from an overview of both standards and the general requirements involved to a detailed discussion of the expected stages from software development and maintenance to risk management, configuration management, and problem resolution. The book provides insightful advice on how the requirements of the IEC 62304 software-development life cycle can be married with an ISO 13485 QMS, how the development of the technical file should be organized, and how to address conformity assessment, the daily after-approval, and the recent trends that will affect the industry in the coming years. The book is modeled after the IEC 62304 standard and adopts its clause structure in the numbering of sections for easy reference. The book does not attempt to replicate either standard. For the ISO 13485 standard, it recites the necessary requirements succinctly. For IEC 62304, the discussion is in-depth and also addresses the impact of ISO 13485 on the requirements discussed. In this way, the book drills into both standards to expose the core of each requirement and shape these into a practical, cohesive workflow for developing, maintaining, and improving a Lean software development pipeline.

Book excerpt: In April 1991 BusinessWeek ran a cover story entitled, "I Can't Work This ?#!!@ Thing," about the difficulties many people have with consumer products, such as cell phones and VCRs. More than 15 years later, the situation is much the same-but at a very different level of scale. The disconnect between people and technology has had society-wide consequences in the large-scale system accidents from major human error, such as those at Three Mile Island and in Chernobyl. To prevent both the individually annoying and nationally significant consequences, human capabilities and needs must be considered early and throughout system design and development. One challenge for such consideration has been providing the background and data needed for the seamless integration of humans into the design process from various perspectives: human factors engineering, manpower, personnel, training, safety and health, and, in the military, habitability and survivability. This collection of development activities has come to be called human-system integration (HSI). Human-System Integration in the System Development Process reviews in detail more than 20 categories of HSI methods to provide invaluable guidance and information for system designers and developers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatic variations often tend to have adverse effect on the yield and production of crops. Efforts have, therefore, been on for harnessing this natural resource through artificial means for increasing crop productivity. One such technology is protected cultivation. This technique is well adopted in Europe and USA and now China and Japan are leading in controlled sphere production of horticultural crops. In India, the technology is making breakthrough in Karnataka and Maharashtra in protected cultivation of pepper, tomato, cucumber, muskmelon, baby corn etc. Precision farming is defined as the cultivation by adopting technologies which give maximum precision in production of a superior crop with a desired yield levels and quality at competitive production. These include use of genetically modified crop varieties, micropropagation, integrated nutrient, water and pest managements, protected cultivation, organic farming, hi-tech horticulture, and post harvest technology. Post-harvest sector needs lot of precision. Peels, rags, etc. go waste. Many times, peels being rich in polyphenols, colouring pigment, nutrients etc are richer in antioxidant than what we actually eat. Here, we need precision. Precision in management, precision in product diversification, precision in value addition are much sought after aspect.
