Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewed from the mainland, the history of the archipelago appears as a long list of non-invited but irresistible disembarkations. Viewed from on an island the archipelago has had a rich and unique history of sustainable use of scarce resources. The main theme of this book is the exploration of the meanings of near islands, of the archipelago. General and particular features of 1,246 islands of the Croatian archipelago are starting points of stories about particular islands, subarchipelagos and urban archipelagos. The chapters question and analyse the archipelago identity from different perspectives. Approached as a group of islands, the analysis investigates features of subarchipelagos, urban subarchipelagos, mainland dependent islands, outlying islands and island emigrant communities that are trying to restore and conserve their island. This book highlights the identity and identities of the archipelago as both complex and multidimensional.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I went to Croatia in search of home, the place where my heart belonged. It was a quest to find out who I was, where I'd come from and identify with who I was on a deeper level.Six months later I bought a property, abandoned at the start of the 1991 war, and embarked upon a different life with my husband in what we hoped was utopia. In the beginning, life among the olives groves and grapevines as we renovated our stone house, was idyllic. We enjoyed the exotic local food and wine. We made good friends and met quirky local characters. But before long locals start to question why we were there and resentment against us set in. Corruption and bribery were commonplace and when I fought back I found myself trapped in a nationalist bureaucratic system from which there was no escape. Whenever we tried to renew the paperwork necessary to legalise our stay, the rules were altered at the whim of belligerent communist-like officials, whose acceptance of Croatia's split from Yugoslavia more than twenty years ago, was doubtful. Should we stay, or should we go?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook describes 33 half- and full day walks on the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. The routes range from 2.5-30km, beginning with a short heritage trail around the city of Valletta. Then follows a series of walks around the coastline of Malta, with a final few moving inland to explore the island's interior, before a description of the Heritage Trail around Mdina and Rabat. Walks on Gozo start with a heritage trail around Victoria, followed by a clockwise exploration of spectacular coastal walking that allows a complete circuit of the island. The final walk on Gozo wanders over a series of little hills further inland, while the last walk in the book might be the best of them all: a circuit around the lovely little island of Comino. The guidebook also gives details of accommodation, transport and tourist information. Malta may be known as a tourist destination, but it also offers plenty of historic walks, stunningly beautiful and dramatic architecture and excellent scenery, especially around the cliffs and coastlines.

Excerpt: Lastovo (pronounced; Italian: , German: , Latin: , Greek: , Illyrian: Ladest) is an island municipality in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County in Croatia. The municipality consists of 46 islands with a total population of 792 people, of which 93% are ethnic Croats, and a land area of approximately 53 km (20 sq mi). The biggest island in the municipality is also named Lastovo, as is the largest town. The majority of the population lives on the 46 km island of Lastovo. Lastovo, like the rest of Roman province of Dalmatia, was settled by Illyrians. The Romans conquered and settled the entire area, retaining control until the Avar invasions and Slavic migrations in the 7th century. The Croats and other Slavic tribes subjugated by the Croats secured most of the Dalmatian seaboard. Sometime around the year 1000 the Venetians attacked and destroyed the settlement, due to the island's participation in piracy along the Adriatic coast. In the 13th century, Lastovo joined the Dubrovnik Republic where for several centuries it enjoyed a certain level of autonomy until the republic's conquest by the French, under Napoleon. Austria then ruled the island for the next century, then Italy and Yugoslavia until it finally became a part of the independent Republic of Croatia. The island is noted for its 15th-...
