Book Synopsis Making Water Security by : Hermen Smit
Download or read book Making Water Security written by Hermen Smit and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Nile water security through the morphology of the river: it uses the always changing form of the river as a theoretical and empirical device to map and understand how infrastructures and discourses dynamically interact with the Nile. By bringing a history of two centuries of dam development on the Nile in relation with the drainage of a hill slope in Ethiopia on the one hand and irrigation reform in Sudan on the other, the author shows how the scales, units and ‘populations’ figuring in projects to securitize the river emerge through the rearrangement of its water and sediments. The analysis of ‘Making water security’ is more than yet another story of how modern projects of water security have legitimized often violent dispossessions of Nile land and water. It shows how no water user is confined by the roles assigned by project engineers and planners. As ongoing modern ‘development’ of the river reduces the prospects for new large diversions of water, the targeted subjects of development and modernization make use of newly opened spaces to carve out their own projects. They creatively mobilize old irrigation and drainage infrastructures in ways that escape the universal logic of water security.

Book Synopsis Novel Ways and Methodologies to Improve Crop Yield by : Oorbessy Gaju
Download or read book Novel Ways and Methodologies to Improve Crop Yield written by Oorbessy Gaju and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global population is increasing at a much faster pace than an increase in the genetic gain for food production by plant breeding. Therefore, we must find ways or methods to improve our food production if we are to ensure food security for all. This special edition is about the novel ways or methodologies that crop or plant scientists are working on to improve crop yield. This could fall under the physiological, biochemical, molecular, or even any novel technological approaches such as phenotyping to rapidly select or find traits that are vital for the improvement of current germplasm to make them resilient to an ever-changing environment. Crop yield, especially grain yield, is a very complex trait to deconvolute and understand as it is influenced by so many factors. With the recent unprecedented weather events where plants are subjected to extreme temperatures (low and high), it is imperative to find ways quickly to screen for varieties that can withstand these changes. Novel ways or methods in the various disciplines (physiology, molecular, phenotyping, biochemical) that can help to identify rapidly the traits related to yield in crops that can lead to an increase in productivity will be informative and help the scientific community to be up to date with recent progress.

Book Synopsis The World Food Situation by : Pierre R. Crosson
Download or read book The World Food Situation written by Pierre R. Crosson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the 1970’s, global grain reserves were level and food prices were low however as the decade progressed crop production plummeted leading to a food crisis. Originally published in the aftermath in 1977, Crosson and Frederick set out to explore the ability of agricultural output to meet the global food demands of future generations. This study analyses how resources and environmental factors would affect food production in developing countries and the United States until the end of the 21st Century. The environmental impacts of land levels, fertiliser and pesticide use are explored in relation to the challenges of meeting food demands. This title will be of interest to students of environmental studies.
