Book Synopsis The Irish regiments in the Great War by : Timothy Bowman
Download or read book The Irish regiments in the Great War written by Timothy Bowman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British army was almost unique among the European armies of the Great War in that it did not suffer from a serious breakdown of discipline or collapse of morale. It did, however, inevitably suffer from disciplinary problems. While attention has hitherto focused on the 312 notorious ‘shot at dawn’ cases, many thousands of British soldiers were tried by court martial during the Great War. This book provides the first comprehensive study of discipline and morale in the British Army during the Great War by using a case study of the Irish regular and Special Reserve batallions. In doing so, Timothy Bowman demonstrates that breaches of discipline did occur in the Irish regiments but in most cases these were of a minor nature. Controversially, he suggests that where executions did take place, they were militarily necessary and served the purpose of restoring discipline in failing units. Bowman also shows that there was very little support for the emerging Sinn Fein movement within the Irish regiments. This book will be essential reading for military and Irish historians and their students, and will interest any general reader concerned with how units maintain discipline and morale under the most trying conditions.

Book excerpt: Athlone: 1900–1923 is perhaps the most detailed analysis ever carried out for an Irish town during these tumultuous times. It is a meticulously researched study of how the developing fortunes of Irish nationalism played out on a local stage, a study that helps the modern reader to appreciate just how the momentous political changes affected the lives of the town's citizens. Throughout this work, the motivations and ideologies of the local personalities that lent colour to much of what occurred are analysed, as are the effects of national and international events on Athlone’s development.

Book Synopsis County Longford and the Irish Revolution, 1910-1923 by : Marie Coleman
Download or read book County Longford and the Irish Revolution, 1910-1923 written by Marie Coleman and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an insight into the Irish revolution, and seeks to explain how it came about, through a study of events at a regional level. County Longford was the scene of Sinn FÈinís crucial by-election victories in 1917 and an active area of IRA operations during the War of Independence. Sinn FÈinís victory in the by-election acted as a catalyst for the rapid spread of the movement throughout Longford in the latter half of 1917. Marie Coleman discusses the political aspect of the revolution by examining the importance of administrative charges as Sinn FÈin and D·il .ireann usurped the functions of the courts and local government, and then goes on to describe the military side of the revolution. A narrative account of the War of Independence and Civil War in Longford is followed by a personnel profile of the Volunteers and Cumann na mBan respectively, outlining their activities at various stages of the independence campaign, and examining their motivation for joining these organisations and engaging in violent activity.
