Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inward Light and Christ's Incarnation Lastly there was one great void - one vast blank - which nothing but God's love in His dear Son has ever filled - namely, the previous absence of all cer tainty of human conquest over death. The old Egyptians far surpassed the Jews in their ideas of future existence. But not even the Universal Inward Light had ever brought to them, or others, an assurance of victory over the Great Fear, until the introduction of the Great Hope through Christ's Resurrection. The noblest of the heathen, such as Plato and Socrates, had, at best, a faith which was as a guess, a conjecture. How sad their hopelessness under bereavement! But what a world of difference there is between the obituary inscriptions of the pagan Romans, - recording their sense of irreparable loss, at the decease of their most dear wives and daughters and sons, - as compared with the later Latin inscriptions on the Christian dead: In hope, - In peace, In Christ. It was not a mere change. It was a revolution in human history, even in the history, and life, and hope, and impulse, of the inmost souls of men. And what brings this hope still to the poor Buddhist, or Hindoo, or Chinese, or Japanese '2 Not the Inward Light, blessed, in its limited degree, though it be; not even that, but only the Gospel record of the historic Christ, the first-begotten from the dead, who, alone but finally, has conquered death and opened the Kingdom of Heaven, with its immortal youth and its glorious processes of eternal education, to all believers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inward Light: A Drama in Four Acts The Reverend Griffith Davenport, a play which to those of us who remember it from its too brief term on the stage seemed the first drama written about our Civil War on a sustained plane of spiritual seriousness worthy of the theme. Certainly such a play as Secret Serv ice can hardly be recommended for spiritual serious ness, however theatrically effective it is or was. Mr. Herne's play, as we recall it, was not a battle of wits, still less of guns, but of principles and moral passions. That may, perhaps, in part account for its failure in the theatre, where neither the causes nor the effects of war seem to intrigue the crowd, but only its romantic excite ments. History, however, cannot be written by a record of romantic excitements, nor can historical drama. Fur thermore, it is not in the physical action but in the spiritual and moral reaction that the true worth and beauty of any event is found, or its true measure of fu tility. It has been, unfortunately, a reproach of Ameri can drama that our stage over-emphasizes physical bus tle, thus failing adequately to represent our history even when it makes the attempt; and, lacking an emphasis on things of the spirit, it lacks the depth of moral passion and the beauty of exaltation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reviewer Reviewed: The Quaker Doctrine of the Inward Light Vindicated; With Some Criticism That you still claim to be believers in the atonement of our blessed Lord is cause of rejoicing and hope in our hearts. We earnestly invite you, with ourselves, to become the practical possessors of this Faith which our early Friends were; being fully persuaded that it will work in us, in due sequence, pardon and cleansing, and guidance into the good word and work appropriate to our day. It should be matter for serious thought with us all, that devout Christians everywhere recog nize no danger so imminent at this time as the impious analysis and disregard of Divine Revelation.
