Palawan, located in the Philippines, has been so honored three years running by Travel + Leisure magazine. Famed for its beaches, caves, mountains, and jungles, Palawan is full of natural wonders and has a special culture of its own. Many people know Palawan for its many gorgeous beaches. In fact, the pristine beaches near the town of El Nido were the inspiration for the film The Beach. A boat tour is a great way for tourists to take in the islands off Palawan’s northern tip. Make sure your tour includes Miniloc Island, where you’ll find deep blue lagoons surrounded by towering limestone formations. Brave and fortunate snorkelers should stop by Matinloc Island for a chance to discover Secret Beach—but only if they time the tide right. For travelers with guts, Palawan also offers a unique man-made diving experience. During World War II, several Japanese ships were sunk in Coron Bay. Novice divers can explore the outside of the ships to see beautiful coral formations growing on these former machines of war.
