Book excerpt: A system of computer programs was developed to solve supersonic inviscid nonuniform flows over sharp and spherically blunted cones at angles of attack. For blunt cones the flow fields considered were axisymmetric wake flows situated so that flow in the subsonic nose region remained axisymmetric. For sharp cones both axisymmetric wake flows and two-dimensional shear flows were considered. The programs incorporate a modified inverse method for solving subsonic flow regions and modified axisymmetric and three-dimensional method of characteristics procedures for solving supersonic flow regions. The Instability and Transition Workshop at Langley was extremely important in help§ ing the scientists community to access the state of knowledge in the area of transition from laminar to turbulent flow, to identify promising future areas of research and to build future interactions between researchers worldwide working in the areas of theoretical, experimental and computational fluid and aero dynamics. The set of two volume contains panel discussions and research contribution with the following objectives: (1) expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of instability and transitions in shear flows over the entire speed range, (2) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these facilities. (3) review current state-of-the-art and propose future directions for instability and transition research, (4) accelerate progress in elucidating basic understanding of transition phenomena and in transferring this knowledge into improved design methodologies through improved transition modeling, and (5) establish mechanism for continued interaction.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on In stability, Transition and Turbulence, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during July 8 to August 2, 1991. This is the second workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Instability and Transition" edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt. The objectives of these work shops are to i) expose the academic community to current technologically im portant issues of transition and turbulence in shear flows over the entire speed range, ii) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these capabilities, and iii) accelerate progress in elucidating the fundamental phenomena of transition and turbulence, leading to improved transition and turbulence modeling in design methodologies. The research areas covered in these proceedings include receptiv ity and roughness, nonlinear theories of transition, numerical simu lation of spatially evolving flows, modelling of transitional and fully turbulent flows as well as some experiments on instability and tran sition. In addition a one-day mini-symposium was held to discuss 1 recent and planned experiments on turbulent flow over a backward facing step.

Book excerpt: The origins of turbulent flow and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow are among the most important unsolved problems of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Besides being a fundamental question of fluid mechanics, there are any number of applications for information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent flow. The JUT AM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, co-hosted by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, was held in Sedona, Arizona. Although four previous JUT AM Symposia bear the same appellation (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984, Toulouse 1989, and Sendai 1994) the topics that were emphasized at each were different and reflect the evolving nature of our understanding of the transition process. The major contributions of Stuttgart 1979 centered on nonlinear behavior and later stages of transition in two-dimensional boundary layers. Stability of closed systems was also included with Taylor vortices in different geometries. The topics of Novosibirsk 1984 shifted to resonant wave interactions and secondary instabilities in boundary layers. Pipe- and channel-flow transition were discussed as model problems for the boundary layer. Investigations of free shear layers were presented and a heavy dose of supersonic papers appeared for the first time. The character of Toulouse 1989 was also different in that 3-D boundary layers, numerical simulations, streamwise vortices, and foundation papers on receptivity were presented. Sendai 1994 saw a number of papers on swept wings and 3-D boundary layers. Numerical simulations attacked a broader range of problems.

Book excerpt: A system of computer programs has been developed to predict supersonic inviscid and viscous nonuniform flow fields over sharp and spherically blunted cones at angle of attack. For blunt cones the flow fields considered were axisymmetric wake flows positioned such that the flow in the subsonic nose region remained axisymmetric. For sharp cones, both axisymmetric wake flows and two-dimensional shear flows were considered. The programs used in solving inviscid flow fields incorporate a modified inverse method for solving subsonic flow regions and modified axisymmetric and three-dimensional method of characteristics procedures for solving the supersonic flow regions. Body properties predicted by the inviscid solutions were used as edge data for solution of the corresponding laminar boundary layer over the bodies.

This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supersonic flow past a thin straight circular cylinder is investigated. The associated boundary layer flow (i.e., the velocity and temperature field) is computed; the asymptotic, far downstream solution is obtained, and compared with the full numerical results. The inviscid, linear, axisymmetric (temporal) stability of this boundary layer is also studied. A so called doubly generalized inflexion condition is derived, which is a condition for the existence of so called subsonic neutral modes. The eigenvalue problem (for the complex wavespeed) is computed for two freestream Mach numbers (2.8 and 3.8), and this reveals that curvature has a profound effect on the stability of the flow. The first unstable inviscid mode is seen to rapidly disappear as curvature is introduced, while the second (and generally the most important) mode suffers a substantially reduced amplification rate. Book excerpt: Application of three-dimensional inviscid and viscous (laminar boundary layer) analyses for cold wall hypersonic flows over sharp cones at incidence is presented relative to experimental data, showing surface upwash angles and entrained vortex formation leading to crossflow-induced boundary-layer transition. Three-dimensional neutral inviscid stability theory for stationary disturbances is used to calculate the angular orientation of the entrained vortices in the boundary layer while a maximum crossflow Reynolds number concept is applied for correlation of the onset to vortex formation due to crossflow instability.

Book excerpt: The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) decided in 1992 to sponsor the fourth Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, Sendai/Japan, 1994. The objectives of the present Symposium were to deepen the fundamental knowledge of stability and laminar turbulent transition in three-dimensional and compressible flows and to contribute to recent developing technologies in the field. This Symposium followed the three previous IUTAM-Symposia (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984 and Toulouse 1989). The Scientific Committee selected two keynote lectures and 62 technical papers. The Symposium was held on the 5th to 9th of September, 1994, at the Sendai International Center in Sendai. The participants were 82 scientists from 10 countries. The keynote lectures have critically reviewed recent development of researches concerning the laminar-to-turbulent transition phenomena from the fundamental and the application aspects. Many papers presented were concerned about the detailed mechanism of the boundary layer transition (receptivity, secondary instability, turbulent spot and bypass transition). Particular emphasis was further placed on the transition of three-dimensional boundary layers on rotation systems and on swept wings. Attention was also given to compressible hypersonic flows.
