Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armin Geertz corrects what he sees as basic American and European tendencies to misrepresent non-Western cultures. Carefully documenting the historical role of prophecy in Hopi Indian religion, Geertz shows how prophecies about the end of the world have been created by the Hopi Traditionalist Movement and used by non-Indian movements, cults, and interest groups. Many of the seeming peculiarities of Hopi religion and culture have been invented, he says, by tourists, novelists, journalists, and scholars, and the millennial Traditionalist Movement has subtly co-authored European and American stereotypes of Indians. Geertz's richly detailed examples and persuasive arguments will be welcomed by all those interested in Native American studies, comparative religions, anthropology, and sociology. Prophets have spawned numerous religions and methods of divination to tell the future. Prophets are not only able to predict some major events seems but may be able to control them. Prophets from the Bible were considered major persons of importance in those times and their predictions were major influences on the decisions of leaders. In my own life I’ve had numerous experiences with premonitions involving the future. They have varied from strong visions, to dreams, to vague feelings, to strong fear. Even though I’ve studied many other types of paranormal experiences and had many, these experiences about future events seem to be my strongest natural precognitive ability. These events also formed major influences on my life, and their study and analysis has therefore been a big passion of mine. In this book my goal is to cover explain the history of Prophecy and Divination, describe the types of experiences people have, and to analyze these phenomena.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the relationship of prophecy to the Deuteronomistic History (Deuteronomy–2 Kings), including the historical reality of prophecy that stands behind the text and the portrayal of prophecy within the literature itself. The contributors use a number of perspectives to explore the varieties of intermediation and the cultic setting of prophecy in the ancient Near East; the portrayal of prophecy in pentateuchal traditions, pre-Deuteronomistic sources, and other Near Eastern literature; the diverse perspectives reflected within the Deuteronomistic History; and the possible Persian period setting for the final form of the Deuteronomistic History. Together the collection represents the current state of an important, ongoing discussion. The contributors are Ehud Ben Zvi, Diana Edelman, Mignon R. Jacobs, Mark Leuchter, Martti Nissinen, Mark O’Brien, Raymond F. Person Jr., Thomas C. Römer, Marvin A. Sweeney, and Rannfrid Thelle.

Scripture The Chart Of History.--Preliminary Questions As To Historic And Prophetic Chronology.--The Age Of The Human Race.--Old Testament Chronology.--The Hebrew And The Septuagint Chronology Compared.-- How Are We To Interpret The Symbolic Periods Of ProPhetic Chronology?--Exposition And Defence Of The Year-day System.--Moral Features Distinguishing The Three Great Dispensations--The Patriarchal--The Jewish--The Christian. Chronological Measures Of These Dispensations.--The Period Of "Seven Times" Shown To Be The Duration Of The Last Or Gentile DisPensation, And Also Of The Two Earlier. THE Bible is the only book in the world that gives us a view of human history as a whole, that carries us from the lost Paradise of Eden, to the restored Paradise of the Apocalypse, traces the course of the human race through every stage of its intermediate existence on earth, and on beyond the limits of time, into the boundless regions of eternity. In it, and in it alone therefore, are we likely to find the key, if key there be, to the periodicity of history, --the underlying principle bringing the labyrinth of inharmonious periods and chronological irregularities which the annals of the human race at first sight present, into harmony with each other, and with the periods of nature and revealed religion. The histories of Scripture reach back to the furthest past, and its prophecies extend to the most distant future; taken together, as they are presented in the Bible, the two afford a panoramic view of the whole course of events, from the creation and fall of man, to the final judgment, and the inauguration of the new heavens and the new earth. The Bible is therefore the chart of all history, and it gives us, not events...

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than five decades, John Hayes's scholarship has had a decisive influence on scholars and students in the field of Hebrew Bible study. This collection of ten essays, written between 1968 and 1995, displays his remarkable and thought-provoking elucidation of Israelite history, prophecy, and law. These essays make significant contributions that challenge the mainstream scholarship establishment with their daring interpretations and explanations, along with their bold, innovative theories. The way in which Hayes approaches the study of seminal figures, biblical texts, and historical reconstructions, combined with his analysis of specific methods, will have lasting implications for contemporary scholarship. He argues that biblical texts must be understood as being embedded within the particular historical, social, cultural, and political matrices from which they emerged. Whether exploring the social formation of early Israel, the final years of Samaria, or the social concept ofcovenant, he demonstrates a textually focussed and exegetically based approach. Hayes's essays provide valuable insights that help contextualise developments within mid- to late-twentieth-century interpretation, thereby granting scholars glimpsesof key moments in the evolution of particular methods, trends, and models that have given shape to current research approaches. Familiarity with Hayes's writings thus allows contemporary interpreters to envisage new avenues and perspectives in critical discussion of the Hebrew Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other topic, prophecy represents the point at which the Divine meets the human, the Absolute meets the relative. How can a human being attain the Word of God? In what manner does God, when conceived as eternal and transcendent, address corporeal, transitory creatures? What happens to God's divine Truth when it is beheld by minds limited in their power to apprehend, and influenced by the intellectual currents of their time and place? How were these issues viewed by the great Jewish philosophers of the past, who took the divine communication and all it entails seriously, while at the same time desired to understand it as much as humanly possible in the course of dealing with a myriad of other issues that occupied their attention? This book offers an in-depth study of prophecy in the thought of seven of the leading medieval Jewish philosophers: R. Saadiah Gaon, R. Judah Halevi, Maimonides, Gersonides, R. Hasdai Crescas, R. Joseph Albo and Baruch Spinoza. It attempts to capture the `original voice' of these thinkers by looking at the intellectual milieus in which they developed their philosophies, and by carefully analyzing their views in their textual contexts. It also deals with the relation between the earlier approaches and the later ones. Overall, this book presents a significant model for narrating the history of an idea.
