Book excerpt: With the approach of the 21st century, and the current trends in manufacturing, the role of computer-controlled flexible manufacturing an integral part in the success of manufacturing enterprises. will take Manufacturing environments are changing to small batch (with batch sizes diminishing to a quantity of one), larger product variety, produc tion on demand with low lead times, with the ability to be 'agile.' This is in stark contrast to conventional manufacturing which has relied on economies of scale, and where change is viewed as a disruption and is therefore detrimental to production. Computer integrated manufac turing (CIM) and flexible manufacturing practices are a key component in the transition from conventional manufacturing to the 'new' manu facturing environment. While the use of computers in manufacturing, from controlling indi vidual machines (NC, Robots, AGVs etc.) to controlling flexible manu facturing systems (FMS) has advanced the flexibility of manufacturing environments, it is still far from reaching its full potential in the environment of the future. Great strides have been made in individual technologies and control of FMS has been the subject of considerable research, but computerized shop floor control is not nearly as flexible or integrated as hyped in industrial and academic literature. In fact, the integrated systems have lagged far behind what could be achieved with existing technology.

The correct regulation of manufacturing activities makes the difference between meeting and missing customer requirements. Nowadays computerised solutions are available as an aid to production management. However, many companies proceed to use sophisticated computer tools without first understanding the basic operating principles. This book is written for students of manufacturing systems as well as people in industry who need a concise explanation of the concepts of Computer Aided Production Management (CAPM) or who may be looking for new ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date and accessible text deals with the basics of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and the many advances made in the field. It begins with a discussion on automation systems, and gives the historical background of many of the automation technologies. Then it moves on to describe the various techniques of automation such as group technology and flexible manufacturing systems. The text describes several production techniques, for example, just-in-time (JIT), lean manufacturing and agile manufacturing, besides explaining in detail database systems, machine functions, and design considerations of Numerical Control (NC) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, and how the CIM system can be modelled. The book concludes with a discussion on the industrial application of artificial intelligence with the help of case studies, in addition to giving network application and signalling approaches. Intended primarily as a text for the undergraduate and graduate students of mechanical, production, and industrial engineering and management, the text should also prove useful for the professionals in the field.

Book excerpt: The Current state of expectations is that Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) will ulti mately determine the industrial growth of world nations within the next few decades. Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS), Robotics together with Knowledge and Information Based Systems (KIBS) and Com munication Networks are expected to develop to a mature state to respond effectively to the managerial requirements of the factories of the future that are becoming highly integrated and complex. CIM represents a new production approach which will allow the factories to deliver a high variety of products at a low cost and with short production cycles. The new technologies for CIM are needed to develop manufacturing environments that are smarter, faster, close-cou pled, integrated, optimized, and flexible. Sophistication and a high degree of specialization in materials science, artificial intelligence, communications technology and knowledge-information science techniques are needed among others for the development of realizable and workable CIM systems that are capable of adjusting to volatile markets. CIM factories are to allow the production of a wide variety of similar products in small batches through standard but multi mission oriented designs that accommodate flexibility with specialized software.

Book excerpt: It is essential for the traditionally industrialised countries to innovate in manu facturing to survive in the increasingly competitive world marketplace. This challenge coupled with the increasing application of computers has led to significant changes in the techniques applied in manufacturing. This book seeks to introduce those technologies that are being applied in discrete parts manufacturing. In the technIcal press there have been many phrases and acronyms coined to describe these technologies including numerical control (NC), machining centres, computer aided manufacture (CAM), computer integrated manufacture (CIM), simulation, robotics, flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), automatic assembly, factory automation, Kanban, just in time (JIT) , manufacturing automation protocol (MAP), advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), etc. The book is intended to introduce senior undergraduates, postgraduate students and practising engineers to the principles of these individual technologies and their integration into complete, automated, programmable manufacturing facilities and systems. It is hoped that this will allow the reader to have a critical perspective of the market place and potential solutions to his own current or future problems. It is also intended to indicate how the complete manufacturing facility can be viewed as a system. The book does not address the related areas of Computer Aided Design (CAD), scheduling, production control and current speculative research at any significant level. It is impossible to do justice, in this short book, to such large subject areas which, without doubt, demand books in their own right. A book such as this is still necessarily wide-ranging and occasionally superficial.
