Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate changes in the attitudes and willingness of Iranian immigrants towards seeking mental health help relative to the duration of their residence in the United States. Total of 87 adult first-generation Iranian immigrants in the U.S. who immigrated after age 15 were surveyed on acculturation, self-perceived bicultural competence, mental health attitudes, and the willingness to seek professional help for mental health concerns. Regressions and path analyses were conducted to examine the data. The results showed that level of adherence to mainstream American culture significantly predicted self-reported bicultural competence, while adherence to the Iranian culture was not a predictor. Additionally, all participants reported high degree of adherence to Iranian culture. Taken together, these findings suggest that for Iranians, bicultural competence is a function of the degree to which mainstream culture is incorporated into their cultural framework. The current sample also demonstrated a high level of willingness to seek help (i.e., M = 5.63, SD = 1.52 on a 7-point scale). Finally, mental health attitudes significantly predicted the willingness to seek help in all proposed models.

Book excerpt: The effects of social status on well-being are pervasive (American Psychological Association Task Force on Socioeconomic Status, 2006; Marmot, 2004). Social status has been proposed to play a role (Berry, 1987; Padilla & Perez, 2003) in the complex association between both acculturation and acculturative stress and psychological well-being (Koneru, 2007). Subjective Social Status is a promising method of measuring social status (Adler, 2013) that has not been examined in regard to immigrants' well-being. In an attempt to fill this gap in the literature, this study explored questions about immigrants' well-being as they acculturate to and deal with acculturative stressors in the United States. In particular, the potential role of subjective social status (SSS) in the acculturation and acculturative stress process was examined. Based on a review of the literature, the expectation was that immigrant perceived social status would be related to well-being, and that this perceived social status would moderate the relationship between acculturation, acculturative stress, and well-being. To explore this hypothesis, two hundred and one adult immigrants were recruited using the Mechanical Turk website. The resulting sample was more acculturated to the United States than their own culture and approximately half the participants identified as non-Latino White/Caucasian. Overall, the results indicated a negative association between acculturative stress with both quality of life and psychological health. Increased acculturation was also positively associated with quality of life and psychological health. Regression analysis also indicated that subjective social status moderated the association between acculturative stress and well-being. The results make the novel contribution that SSS is relevant to immigrants' well-being. Future research should be conducted in populations that are less acculturated to the United States and examine the factors that affect immigrant's subjective experience of status. Limitations and further direction for future study focusing on subjective social status in immigrants are discussed.

Book excerpt: The dissertation investigated the relationship between acculturation, acculturative stress, locus of control, and perceived social support on the mental health of Chinese immigrant adolescents. Study participants included 81 first generation Chinese immigrant adolescents. Mental health was operationalized using the BASC emotional symptoms index and somatization score. As hypothesized, acculturative stress and perceived parental support were significant predictors of both emotional symptoms and somatization. Locus of control and perceived peer support were significant predictors of emotional symptoms only, while acculturation was not a significant predictor of either emotional symptoms or somatization. Furthermore, the results suggested that locus of control and social support had a direct impact on mental health outcomes, rather than an indirect, stress buffering role. Future research and study implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between daily spiritual experiences, appraisals of controllability, and psychological well-being among Middle-Eastern immigrant adults living in the U.S. Research Design: A descriptive, correlational design was used in this study. Participants filled out a survey that included (1) demographic variables (2) The Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES) (3) The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and (4) participants' appraisal ratings of controllability. Methods: A convenience sample of fifty-two participants was drawn from an Islamic public library within Midwestern US. Descriptive statistics were computed that included frequencies, means, and reliability estimates. Bivariate correlations were computed to examine the relationships between specific demographic variables, the DSES, the CES-D, and the participants' appraisal ratings of controllability. Findings: There were no significant relationships found between the daily spiritual experiences, the participants' appraisal ratings of controllability, and depressive symptoms among Middle-Eastern immigrant adults living in the US. Many of the participants did report having depressive symptoms indicative of depression. Conclusions: Findings of this study suggested that many participants reported having very positive daily spiritual experiences that were not significantly related to their mental health.
