Although progress toward peace has been made, concrete steps to a final resolution have not yet occurred. This has had serious political, social, economic, and military consequences for the countries in the region. Despite the significance of the issue, until now very few scholarly works have dealt with the regional and international dimensions of the conflict. In particular, little attention has been paid to the role of the superpowers and of the United Nations in the region and to the other related issues which are the focus of this book. The Western Sahara conflict raises serious questions about the role of international law and of the United Nations in achieving the decolonization of former colonial territories and resolving regional conflicts. Taken together, the work of the scholars, diplomats, and experts in international law who have contributed to this volume constitutes a significant contribution to our understanding of the role of outside powers in the origins and evolution of the war in the Western Sahara. Their work also casts new light on the efforts of the Maghrebi states to overcome regional divisions by themselves and on the continuing attempts by the United Nations to resolve the conflict in the Western Sahara and restore respect for international law. This work will interest specialists West African affairs and in international law and organizations.

After the end of apartheid, it was seen that the struggle had been completed; however, it seems that the struggle still continues in the case of Western Sahara. The Western Saharan conflict is considered to be one of the forgotten conflicts in the world and the territory is listed as one of the non-self governing territories by the United Nations. It is considered as a conflict of liberation and for the right of self determination against an occupying country- Morocco. The conflict has seen the involvement of various regional and international actors such as Algeria, Spain, United States, EU and the UN all with their interests in the territory. This paper aims to analyze the role played by each actor and how their involvement in the conflict has impacted the conflict. The first section will provide a brief background to the conflict and the legal issues surrounding the conflict. The second part will focus on the regional dimensions in the conflict; the regional actors involved and how the conflict is impacting them. The third part will focus on the international arena and how their involvement has impacted the Sahrawi right of self determination. The final section will dwell on why the territory is important to the international arena.

Both old and neglected, the conflict reflects the colonial past of the region and the unresolved territorial issues that still stiffens the relationship between Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and the SADR (Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic also knows as the POLISARIO). The end of Spanish colonial rule in Western Sahara marked the beginning of a long fought war and transitioned into a stage of attrition whose tremendous human, political and economic costs hinder any prospect of regional development. More than 30 years after the war began, and despite the UN-brokered cease fire of 1991, a comprehensive solution remains far from being achieved. This is due to the fact that most parties, including major players at the UN, consider the status-quo to be bearable and offers advantages a settlement might put in jeopardy. As a result, the conflict has become a frozen issue that attracts less attention or engagement from the international community. This research also hopes to expand the knowledge of the international political dimensions pertaining to the early stages of the conflict by conducting historical analysis of the various perspectives, views, military tactics that the parties have adopted in their attempt to draw military and diplomatic support for their cause. The strategic importance of the region triggered an indirect military and diplomatic support for Morocco by its traditional allies, especially the US and France. For the SADR government, the support was mainly channeled from Algeria, Libya and other entities through the Organization of the African Union and the UN, stressing the right of self-determination of the Sahrawi people and their recognition on the international stage.
