This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application Specific Processors is written for use by engineers who are developing specialized systems (application specific systems). Traditionally, most high performance signal processors have been realized with application specific processors. The explanation is that application specific processors can be tailored to exactly match the (usually very demanding) application requirements. The result is that no `processing power' is wasted for unnecessary capabilities and maximum performance is achieved. A disadvantage is that such processors have been expensive to design since each is a unique design that is customized to the specific application. In the last decade, computer-aided design systems have been developed to facilitate the development of application specific integrated circuits. The success of such ASIC CAD systems suggests that it should be possible to streamline the process of application specific processor design. Application Specific Processors consists of eight chapters which provide a mixture of techniques and examples that relate to application specific processing. The inclusion of techniques is expected to suggest additional research and to assist those who are faced with the requirement to implement efficient application specific processors. The examples illustrate the application of the concepts and demonstrate the efficiency that can be achieved via application specific processors. The chapters were written by members and former members of the application specific processing group at the University of Texas at Austin. The first five chapters relate to specific arithmetic which often is the key to achieving high performance in application specific processors. The next two chapters focus on signal processing systems, and the final chapter examines the interconnection of possibly disparate elements to create systems.
Book Synopsis Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors by : Mark A. Richards
Download or read book Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors written by Mark A. Richards and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-02-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors presents leading-edge research that focuses on design methodology, infrastructure support and scalable architectures developed by the 150 million dollar DARPA United States Department of Defense RASSP Program. The contributions to this edited work include an introductory overview chapter that explains the origin, concepts and status of this effort. The RASSP Program is a multi-year DARPA/Tri-Service initiative intended to dramatically improve the process by which complex digital systems, particularly embedded signal processors, are designed, manufactured, upgraded and supported. This program was originally driven by military applications for signal processing. The requirements of military applications for real-time signal processing are typically more demanding than those of commercial applications, but the time gap between technology employed in advanced military prototypes and commercial products is narrowing rapidly. The research on methodologies, infrastructure and architectures presented in this book is applicable to commercial signal processing systems that are in design now, or will be developed before the end of the decade. Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors is a valuable reference for developers of embedded digital systems, particularly systems engineers for signal processing systems (such as digital TV, biomedical image processing systems and telecommunications) and for military contractors who are developing signal processing systems. This book will also be of interest to managers who are charged with responsibility for creating and maintaining environments and infrastructures for developing large embedded digital systems. The chief value for managers will be the defining of methods and processes that reduce development time and cost.

Download or read book Fleet Management and Logistics written by Teodor G. Crainic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TEODOR GABRIEL CRAINIC, DIRECTOR The Centre for Research on Transportation (C.R.T.) was founded in 1971 by the Universite de Montreal. From 1988 on, it is jointly managed by the Universite de Montreal and its affiliated schools, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales and Ecole Poly technique. Professors, students and researchers from many institutions in the Montreal area join forces at the C.R.T. to analyze transportation, logistics and telecommunication systems from a multidisciplinary perspective. The C.R.T. pursues three major, complementary objectives: training of high-level specialists; the advancement of knowledge and technology; the transfer of technology towards industry and the public sector. Its main field of expertise is the develop ment of quantitative and computer-based models and methods for the analysis of urban, regional and intercity transportation networks, as well as telecommunication systems. This applies to the study of passenger and commodity flows, as well as to the socioeconomic aspects of transportation: policy, regulation, economics. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the C.R.T. offered the opportunity to evaluate past accomplishments and to identify future trends and challenges. Five colloquia were thus organized on major research and application themes that also reflected our main research areas. They gathered together internationally renowned researchers who linked recent scientific and technological advances to modeling and methodological challenges waiting to be tackled, particularly concerning new problems and applica tions, and the increasingly widespread use of new technologies.

Book Synopsis Application-Driven Architecture Synthesis by : Francky Catthoor
Download or read book Application-Driven Architecture Synthesis written by Francky Catthoor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application-Driven Architecture Synthesis describes the state of the art of architectural synthesis for complex real-time processing. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements and the intricacies of complex real-time signal and data processing, target architecture styles and target application domains have been adopted to make the synthesis approach feasible. These approaches are also heavily application-driven, which is illustrated by many realistic demonstrations, used as examples in the book. The focus is on domains where application-specific solutions are attractive, such as significant parts of audio, telecom, instrumentation, speech, robotics, medical and automotive processing, image and video processing, TV, multi-media, radar, sonar. Application-Driven Architecture Synthesis is of interest to both academics and senior design engineers and CAD managers in industry. It provides an excellent overview of what capabilities to expect from future practical design tools, and includes an extensive bibliography.
Book Synopsis Memory Optimizations of Embedded Applications for Energy Efficiency by : Jong Soo Park
Download or read book Memory Optimizations of Embedded Applications for Energy Efficiency written by Jong Soo Park and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current embedded processors often do not satisfy increasingly demanding computation requirements of embedded applications within acceptable energy efficiency, whereas application-specific integrated circuits require excessive design costs. In the Stanford Elm project, it was identified that instruction and data delivery, not computation, dominate the energy consumption of embedded processors. Consequently, the energy efficiency of delivering instructions and data must be sufficiently improved to close the efficiency gap between application-specific integrated circuits and programmable embedded processors. This dissertation demonstrates that the compiler and run-time system can play a crucial role in improving the energy efficiency of delivering instructions and data. Regarding instruction delivery, I present a compiler algorithm that manages L0 instruction scratch-pad memories that reside between processor cores and L1 caches. Despite the lack of tags, the scratch-pad memories with our algorithm can achieve lower miss rates than caches with the same capacities, saving significant instruction delivery energy. Regarding data delivery, I present methods that minimize memory-space requirements for parallelizing stream applications, applications that are commonly found in the embedded domain. When stream applications are parallelized in pipelining, large enough buffers are required between pipeline stages to sustain the throughput (e.g., double buffering). For static stream applications where production and consumption rates of stages are close to compile-time constants, a compiler analysis is presented, which computes the minimum buffer capacity that maximizes the throughput. Based on this analysis, a new static streamscheduling algorithm is developed, which yields considerable speed-up and data delivery energy saving compared to a previous algorithm. For dynamic stream applications, I present a dynamically-sized array-based queue design that achieves speed-up and data delivery energy saving compared to a linked-list based queue design.

Book Synopsis Pipelined Multiprocessor System-on-Chip for Multimedia by : Haris Javaid
Download or read book Pipelined Multiprocessor System-on-Chip for Multimedia written by Haris Javaid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes analytical models and estimation methods to enhance performance estimation of pipelined multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs). A framework is introduced for both design-time and run-time optimizations. For design space exploration, several algorithms are presented to minimize the area footprint of a pipelined MPSoC under a latency or a throughput constraint. A novel adaptive pipelined MPSoC architecture is described, where idle processors are transitioned into low-power states at run-time to reduce energy consumption. Multi-mode pipelined MPSoCs are introduced, where multiple pipelined MPSoCs optimized separately are merged into a single pipelined MPSoC, enabling further reduction of the area footprint by sharing the processors and communication buffers. Readers will benefit from the authors’ combined use of analytical models, estimation methods and exploration algorithms and will be enabled to explore billions of design points in a few minutes.
