Book excerpt: A vivid recounting of WWII combat by a highly decorated soldier: “Few can match Buster in the description of his personal wartime actions and impressions.” —Filson Club History Quarterly He graduated from West Point in 1939, just in time to serve through one of the most crucial periods in national and world history. William R. Buster, born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, knew a soldier’s combat experience—and left a firsthand account of it. His story tells of the incredible expansion, arming, and training of the US Army, as well as his experience in the great conflict itself, from North Africa and Sicily to the hedgerow country of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and on to Berlin. For his service, he received the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and the French Croix de Guerre. Includes photographs “To my mind, this memoir rings as true as steel. Any combat soldier will recognize episodes and experiences recounted here . . . Anyone possessing a grain of empathy with the human being caught in the toils of war will find the story interesting in detail and moving in emotional effect.” —Charles P. Roland, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Kentucky

Download or read book One Paradigm, Many Worlds written by Mitchell Rosenwald and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Paradigm, Many Worlds: Conflict Resolution across the Disciplines surveys how the paradigm of collaborative conflict resolution shapes a variety of disciplines. Conflict resolution examines the theory, research, strategies and spirit that accompany subscription to this “win-win” approach to conflict. In the past few decades, such a collaborative approach has emerged to challenge existing “win-lose” paradigms to approaching conflict that are predicated on some form of violence and unacknowledged/ unchanging power differentials. By challenging these existing paradigms, One Paradigm, Many Worlds documents and instructs on the merits of the collaborative approach to conflict resolution. It promises a broad and contemporary examination of how this paradigm both influences and holds the potential to influence a number of different professional and academic disciplines. The text is organized in four sections. They focus on the application of conflict resolution in the human services, elementary/secondary education, higher education, and a range of other disciplines (philosophy, communication, international relations). With such a breadth contained in the text, One Paradigm, Many Worlds’ unifying core is the centrality of conflict resolution as a paradigm supportive of cooperation, positive communication and relationship to self, to others, to organizations and institutions, and to society.
Book Synopsis The Old Gray Mare by : John S Eberhardt
Download or read book The Old Gray Mare written by John S Eberhardt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 112th Field Artillery Regiment (Horse-Drawn) was a New Jersey Army National Guard unit called into active military service in January of 1941. The Old Gray Mare describes life in this unit, the Army's last horse-drawn field artillery unit, through the eyes of a young lieutenant during the Plattsburg Training Maneuvers in 1939 and during the 112th's post-activation training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The Old Gray Mare provides an insightful picture of the daily routine in garrison and the field of a horse unit during what proved to be the final year of its existence. It describes the close bonds formed between men and their horses, the care and handling required to maintain a well-trained horse artillery unit, the pride and professionalism developed by "serving the guns", and the archaic, social environment that surrounded this elite formation. It gives witness to the dreaded man and horse-killing stampede of crazed animals as well as the excitement of the polo field that was so much a part of the fabric of the horse artillery. The Old Gray Mare is a light and entertaining book that gives a nostalgic view of a military unit forced out of existence by advances in technology at the beginning of World War II. It is an interesting and unique snapshot of a time and a life-style that no longer exists.
