Book excerpt: The addition of the body to the plane wing increased the exposed wing loading at a given lift coefficient as much as 10 percent with the body at 0 degrees incidence and 4 percent at 4 degrees incidence. The bending-moment coefficients at the wing-body juncture were increased about 2 percent with the body at 0 degrees incidence, whereas the increases were as much as 10 percent with the body at 4 degrees incidence.

Book excerpt: Tests of two wing-body combinations have been conducted in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel at a Reynolds number of 4,000,000 and a Mach number of 0.19 to determine the effects of the bodies on the wing span load distributions. The wings had 4 5° sweepback of the quarter-chord line, aspect ratio 8.02, taper ratio 0.45, and incorporated 12-percent-thick airfoil sections streamwise. One wing was untwisted and uncambered whereas the second wing incorporated both twist and camber. Identical bodies of revolution, of 10:1 fineness ratio, having diameter-to-span ratios of 0.10, were mounted in mid -high-wing arrangements. The effects of wing incidence, wing fences, and flap deflection were determined for the plane uncambered wing.

Hewes and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trends in lateral stability and control produced variations of the mass distribution were determined for a model with a 45 degree sweptback wing. Calculations were made to correlate the trends determined by theory with those determined from tests of a free-flying dynamic model in the Langley free-flight tunnel.

This book was released on 1954 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made in the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel of the pressure distribution on a wing-body combination having a 45 degree swept-back wing with aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.6, and NACA 65A006 airfoil sections parallel to the plane of symmetry. The body had an afterbody which was cylindrical from the region of the leading edge of the wing-body juncture rearward to the base. Data were obtained at Mach number from 0.60 to 1.13. The test Reynolds numbers ranged from 1,740,000 to 2,030,000. In order to determine the effects on loads of a change in body shape, the results of this investigation are compared with similar data previously obtained for the same wing in combination with a body that was curved from the nose to the base.

This book was released on 1952 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation at low scale has been made in the Langley stab unity tunnel in order to determine the effect of linear spanwise variations of twist and circular-arc camber on the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics and static-stability and rotary-stability (rolling and yawing) derivatives of a wing of aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.6, and with 45 deg sweepback of the quarter-chord line. Results of the investigation indicate that twist or camber produced only small changes in the maximum lift coefficient. A combination of camber and twist was more effective than twist alone in providing an increase in the maximum lift-to-drag ratio in the moderate lift-coefficient range for the wings investigated. The variation of static longitudinal stability through the lift-coefficient range was less for the twisted wing than for the twisted and cambered or plane wing. A combination of twist and camber generally extended the initial linear range of several of the static- and rotary-stability derivatives to a higher lift coefficient and, although these effects were small, higher Reynolds numbers may result in larger effects.
