This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents an investigation into the behavior of steel-reinforced concrete filled steel tubular columns (CFT) using the finite element software ABAQUS. The steel tube provides lateral confinement to the concrete core which results in an increased concrete compressive strength and deformation capacity. The concrete infill, in return, prevents the inward local buckling within steel tubes. The axial load bearing capacity of CFT is thus higher than the summation of axial load-bearing capacities of the concrete core and the hollow steel tube. The axial force P and moment M interaction diagram is generated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns have become increasingly popular in structural applications due to their high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. These structural properties are the result of integral behavior of the concrete core and the steel tube. This research provides an analysis of the interaction of the concrete core and the steel tube in CFT columns. While there have been many experimental studies of CFT columns, there has been no analytical work modeling the confining effect of the steel tube on the concrete core. Furthermore, current design procedures tend to underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFTs since they neglect the confining effect of the steel tube on the concrete core. Since experimental programs are expensive, time consuming and limited to small ranges of parameters, it is important to develop an analytical model for CFT members. In this study emphasis is placed on the nonlinear response of CFT columns subjected to axial and combined loadings. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed for CFT columns. The concrete core is modeled with 3-D solid elements which use the Pramono-William concrete model and the steel tube is modeled using shell elements which allow large deformation and contain a von Mises plasticity model with kinematic hardening. Gap elements are used to model concrete and steel interface. The finite element model is calibrated against existing experimental results. Analyses of columns under axial loading indicate that the stress-strain properties of the concrete core are highly affected by the geometrical configuration of the columns as well as material properties of concrete core. CFT columns exhibit high flexural capacity with a hardening type of behavior due to higher ductility and larger compressive capacity of concrete core which is provided by confining effect of steel tube. The circular CFTs show a hardening type of response under axial loading while, a degrading type of behavior is observed in square columns. Simple models are developed in order to define the axial and flexural capacity of CFT columns. The proposed methodology is calibrated against experimental data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns are increasingly used in modern composite construction due to their high strength, high ductility, high corrosion resistance, high durability and aesthetics and ease of maintenance. Thin-walled CFSST columns are characterized by the different strain-hardening behavior of stainless steel in tension and in compression, local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement. Design codes and numerical models often overestimate or underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFSST columns. This book presents accurate and efficient computational models for the nonlinear inelastic analysis and design of CFSST short and slender columns under axial load and biaxial bending. The effects of different strain-hardening characteristics of stainless steel in tension and in compression, progressive local and post-local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement are taken into account in the computational models. The numerical models simulate the axial load-strain behavior, moment-curvature curves, axial load-deflection responses and axial load-moment strength interaction diagrams of CFSST columns. The book describes the mathematical formulations, computational procedures and model verifications for circular and rectangular CFSST short and slender columns. The behavior of CFSST columns under various loading conditions is demonstrated by numerous numerical examples. This book is written for practising structural and civil engineers, academic researchers and graduate students in civil engineering who are interested in the latest computational techniques and design methods for CFSST columns.

Book Synopsis Bearing Capacity of Concrete Filled Steel Tube Columns by : Anatoly Krishan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete filled steel tubes columns of circular cross section (CFST) have significant constructive, technological, economic advantages. Therefore, CFST are increasingly used in construction practice. Due to the complex nature of CFST load resistance, regulations of the Europe, Australia, Brazil, India, Canada, China, the USA, Japan, and of a number of other countries recommend using empirical formulas for calculating their bearing capacity. Despite the large number of the experiments, serving as a basis for these formulas, they do not always allow to obtain valid results. Besides, these methods, as a rule, do not allow the calculations of compressed CFST elements, which have any differences from a ,Äúclassical,Äù design, for example, the presence of a high-strength rod and (or) spiral reinforcement, various types of concrete, the effect of preliminary lateral compression of a concrete core, etc. The purpose of this monograph is to propose the method of deformation calculation of the bearing capacity of compressed CFST elements under short-term load action based on the phenomenological approach and the theoretical positions of reinforced concrete mechanics.

Book Synopsis Analytical and Experimental Study on Slender Concrete-filled Steel Tube Columns and Beam-columns by : Tiziano Perea
Download or read book Analytical and Experimental Study on Slender Concrete-filled Steel Tube Columns and Beam-columns written by Tiziano Perea and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of composite steel-concrete columns and beam-columns in many structural systems is increasing globally due to the intrinsic synergy when these materials are designed and detailed together properly. However, limited test data are available to justify the structural system response factors and comprehensive design equations in current design specifications. This research, through the testing of 18 full-scale, slender concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) beam-columns, attempts to address the latter need. The circular and rectangular CFT specimens tested for this research are by far the longest and the most slender full-scale CFT members tested worldwide. These CFT specimens were subjected to a complex load protocol that includes pure compression, uniaxial and biaxial bending combined with compression, pure torsion, and torsion combined with compression. In addition, data from the hydrostatic pressure on the steel tubes due to the fresh concrete at casting was evaluated. The single most important contribution of this research is the clarification of the interaction between strength and stability in slender composite concrete-filled columns and beam-columns. Parallel to the experimental study, advanced computational analyses were carried out to calibrate material and element models that characterize the salient features of the observed CFT response, such as steel local buckling and residual stresses, concrete confinement, stability effects, strength, and stiffness degradation, among others. Based on the observed behavior, simplified guidelines for the computation of the strength and stiffness parameters for CFT columns and beam-columns are proposed for design purposes.
